Therein begins an extraordinary process of self-discovery, reflection, and ancient memory recall as Narada receives the esoteric teachings of this highly evolved group of spiritual masters; including discussions on forgiveness, energy, healing, meditation, reincarnation, and more.
Readers will recognize in Naradas story the struggles common to many seekers on the path of spiritual development. They will identify with him as he strives to understand the teachings, and find their own innate wisdom reflected back.

High in the Andes - William Michael Kaufman

Praise for HIGH IN THE ANDES

A must read for anyone who is on a spiritual journey! A spiritual adventure novel, yes, but more importantly, this book is a guide to inner growth and discovery of who we really are. Profound in its depth of the great Spiritual Teachings of the Ages, Kaufman makes the complex and esoteric completely understandable and clear. He writes in a very humble and natural tone while presenting this seemingly simple tale of a man on his own spiritual journey. The story is engaging, very insightful and a quick read, while delivering life-changing wisdom.—Luanne Phillips, Psychotherapist and Energy Healer

"High in the Andes is inspirational, intriguing, and thought provoking to anyone who is a spiritual seeker. William’s unique way of engaging the reader in mysterious events that unfold in the story made me keep turning the page. I was motivated to consider esoteric concepts such as multi-dimensionality, time, and reincarnation as I remembered my own ancient knowledge and wisdom. Wow! I highly recommend this book! Five Stars!"—Linda Roebuck, MA, Counseling Psychology

"If you are looking for a genre that includes adventure and mystery with a strong theme of spirituality then William Kaufman’s High in the Andes is a great match. This is both a fun and an uplifting read. Like the lead character I too have traveled and experienced spiritual awakenings on my journeys. William’s book takes me back to my own experiences and hooks me in to his story!"—Richard Bredeson, Qigong Teacher, Spiritual Activist

"For me, High in the Andes was a very relaxing journey for my mind, spirit and soul that gently took me to a higher level of peaceful consciousness. Even when I think about the story I find myself going into a state of tranquility. Great work!"—Debra Lipsky, Internal Chinese Healing Arts Practitioner

"High In The Andes captivates its readers with its compelling plot and vivid imagery. William’s creative and distinct writing style—heavily influenced by his travels across the globe and experiences and exposure to various cultures and societies—has yielded a literary masterpiece that will appeal to a broad range of audiences!"—Inge Aylor-Abney, Spiritual Traveler

"High in the Andes brought me to a higher place—an inner and outer journey. Was it real or fiction? The lines and realms became blurred as it became mine. The descriptions were visual trips that transported me. The words such as ‘letting go allowed me to remember’ confirmed ideas, brought back long forgotten memories, and opened me up to the lessons. I travelled with him into inner and outer worlds and yearned for more—for this to stretch me to go beyond. The words inspired me on my own journey; to fall away from close reality, and seek deeper connection to self and others. Some books change you and stay with you and this is one of those that you go back to!—Lee Irving, Spiritual seeker

I totally enjoyed the read. I intend to read it several more times. There is such depth that further readings may reveal more.—Peggie O’Dea, Massage Therapist

William Kaufman takes you on a journey with him that will delight and interest and challenge you. Be prepared to grow. —Rosemary Bredeson, The Scientific Mystic

"High in the Andes came into my life at the beginning of my own journey of inner discovery. For me, it was nothing short of transformative. Through his use of allegory, fantastical images, and poetic descriptions of the mind, Kaufman’s tale of inner exploration touches upon many universal aspects of the human condition in a way that is easily accessible to the reader. High in the Andes is an entertaining ‘must read’ for anyone interested in self-discovery."—Amber L. Schmidt, LCSW-C

    INTRODUCTION

    Prologue

    The Fantastic Journey

    Hey Will! Got your ticket?

Ted came bounding into my office, more excited about my trip than I was.

Oh, hey Ted. I’m a. . . working on that right now.

Actually, I was wandering around social media; less excited about my trip than he was. And my diversion through social media didn’t help motivate me either, especially the entry: Hi Will, keep moving forward. You get that promo and you can apply to the club—guaranteed entrada, man. Can’t wait to do rounds with you!

Ted was about my age, but seemed to look up to me like an older brother; maybe he thought I was blazing a trail for him. And while Ted may have thought of me as an older brother, others saw me as his junior. Despite his enthusiasm his receding hairline was already proving that it wasn’t going to stop. And his waist line. . . well, let’s just say his tailor had more than once directed him back to the store for the next larger size.

He was a new admit to the firm right after college, and although I had preceded him by just a few months, he latched onto me to learn the ropes, the tricks, the warnings, and the gossip. Not that I was an expert, far from it. But I enjoyed the boost to my self-esteem, and the positive effect it had on others; especially the boss, who saw in me someone he could groom for advancement—mine or his I could never quite figure out.

I started there just under five years ago—fresh, bright, and eager! Oh, yeah, I was going places! And I wore my pride like a medal of honor that family pinned on my vest while the Greek chorus of cheerleaders approved and encouraged. I had my life all planned out, except at the time I didn’t realize it was really more to please others than myself.

In the middle of these mental meanderings, I heard the secretary’s voice suddenly blare out of the phone, as if a claustrophobic genie had frantically burst out of the bottle by herself.

Will, the big boss wants you, pronto, snap to, march march! I think Sally kept her sanity by amusing herself with these verbal embellishments. She was, in fact, sweet, lovely, and expressive in her joyous embrace of the first springtime flower, the first autumn leaf to fall, and the first winter snowflake. She was not one to turn away a good piece of gossip, and was so disarming at times in the naiveté she exhibited that she became the repository for all the office intrigue, secrets, and scandals. Just don’t cross her—that was a mistake better made not more than once, if at all; and any condescension would have you standing in quicksand around her. Ted became my servant as soon as I passed that advice onto him.

The Big Boss. That was my boss’s boss. High up in the corporate hierarchy, high up in the building. If not for all the other buildings surrounding it one would be able to see great distances and get a much bigger picture.

Mr. Bombaric. Mr. Bob Bombaric. Big Boss. BB. Not Robert, or Rob—no first name basis with him. What a name. Doesn’t take much to imagine what we all called him. Mr. B—our polite version—was what you call a self-made man. Worked his way to the top all on his own, by the strength of his own perseverance and charm; not to mention guile, arrogance, cunning, and conniving. He was larger than life—physically—and enjoyed all the perks that came with the position. His appetite pretty much consumed everything—and everyone—in his path. If you were on his good side, you had it made. Until, of course, you found yourself on his bad side. And there was only one weather forecaster who could tell you how the wind was blowing around him. Yep, Sally was not as naïve as she pretended to be.

Come on in Will. Tell me how you’re doing?

Thank you, Mr. Bombaric. Actually I’m feeling kind of …

Excellent, excellent! Glad to hear it! And what about your current team members?

Well, I was just saying the other day …

Great. Glad to hear it! You know, I can tell you’re going places son. Why, you remind me of myself when I was just starting out. And you know why?

    I really couldn’t s…

Because you’re a great listener, just like me. Always had my ears to the wind. Yep. They called me ‘Mr. Ear-ly’—not because I was here before everyone else, but because I heard everything people said. And I remembered. Sure did. Came in pretty handy, too, I tell you! People sure learned to watch what they said around me. So, I hear you’ve been mentoring Ted. That’s good. Responsible. Shows good promise. Listen Will, next week on your trip I want you to make sure you stop in and greet Mr. Sanitony, and tell him I’m sending the best man for the job. So, any questions for me?

Well, I was kind of wond…

Excellent, excellent. Have a good trip then.

Yes sir! And I finally got to finish a sentence.

When I descended from those exalted heights and exited the elevator, Don, another team member approached.

So, how’d it go with Mr. Barbaric, Will? Pep talk or reprimand?

The usual bombast, Don. A real ego booster. Just can’t wait to dig in and climb into oblivion.

Actually I was kind of looking forward to the trip; but not because it meant climbing up the corporate ladder. Rather for the little time away; a chance to sit quietly and space out the window. I rather enjoyed these occasional jaunts, and despite complaining outwardly that my destination was so remote there was no airplane service, I secretly enjoyed the train ride. It was longer. I had my own compartment. And it provided a chance just to sit back, let go, and traverse the landscape of my own inner world. It had been over a year since my last train trip, and now I was more excited than ever. But whenever I exhibited these feelings to others, they just chalked it up to my efforts to get ahead in the corporate world.

I correctly played my part until departure; exhibiting my old, enthusiastic, go-getter side; not revealing any of my true feelings. And once on the train I felt I could finally let go of the pretense, and allow my true feelings to come out. But what exactly they were, I wasn’t sure.

It wasn’t always like this. I was as eager as Ted when I began this job. I was ambitious and goal oriented; and wanted the success, prestige, and perks that came with the corporate package—buying into other people’s goals and chasing other people’s dreams. Now, however, I just wanted to forget all this career stuff. For some reason, ever since I returned from my vacation last year, nothing had felt the same. And all those goals and dreams had begun to lose their grip.

Finally on the train, in my own compartment, I started to relax, slipping ever deeper into the recesses of my mind. Looking back, I’d say it was the rhythm that started it all. And now, as then, I can still hear that train vibrating along what seemed an eternal track, clicking systematically where one rail segment joined another. As I stared out the window, eventually I forgot my destination and became lost in a place of shifting landscapes and horizons. Soon I found myself on a different journey, one that I felt I had taken before. I couldn’t remember when, or any particular details, but I knew it just the same, in a way that didn’t have to be questioned. But where was I going? I must have known, because it wasn’t my habit to travel without a destination. Yet the more I pondered that question, the more it eluded me. Finally I let it go, and as though the very effort to remember had the opposite effect, I discovered that just the act of letting go allowed me to remember. It allowed the memory to come a different way.

The memory was not a thought, but a knowing—just knowing. Only now as I look back and analyze can I say that knowing is a pure state in which those building blocks of intellect—like doubt, inquiry, categorization, and assessment—can not reveal the whole story. Knowing is an ineffable state of being that is created out of those building blocks, yet transcends them into something greater. And yet, I later reflected, where is the journey in just the being? My answer was not a resolution but simply the reflection that one was a state of inquiry, the other of knowing. . .

While lost in this reverie I heard a voice call out. May I join you? How long it took me to shift realities I’ll never know, because where I had just been the dimension of time didn’t exist. Yet in the glance that brought my gaze directly into his eyes in that single movement came the realization that I had known him in some distant and ancient past. Somehow we were beyond, yet prior to, introductions, and our current names now little mattered.

We focused together for a moment out the window on the clouds, which seemed to enshroud us within another dimension of knowing. The pulsing on the tracks became the beating heart that sustained a body of shared memories; a shared love so deep that our souls vibrated as one. Our gazes came back together,
