Lynn Jaanz

Lynn Jaanz is an established professional artist who opened ‘The Journey of Life and the Human Condition’. Exhibiting regularly, Lynn Jaanz has sold paintings around the world. She brings a unique and fresh approach to abstract. Her work has underlying interpretations of spirituality and perception of a higher power, which jumps off the canvas and touches the observer. Art has always been a part of Jaanz’s life while growing up in Victoria, Australia, where most of her youth was surrounded by natural beauty and artistic inspiration. Lynn Jaanz’s art explores the human condition and the complexities of living. The use of colours, curves, and crosses portrays the different journeys mankind take in search of meaning and peace. The business of some works strongly depicts the myriad of experiences and emotions on the journey through this life. ‘Man is searching for meaning, searching for hope, searching for love, searching for significance in his perpetual state of confusion.’ The art gives hope and finality that there is always a higher force and light in the dark. The works are full of symbolism of peace, nature, and light depicted by greenery and Jaanz’s trademark ‘birds’. Jaanz’s art depict the eventual triumph and glory of the human condition. Interpretations of her works are within the eyes of the beholder.

    Preface

It is one thing to look back on your life and reflect on the choices you have made, the paths they led you along, and the lessons you learned along the way. It is another to see, with wonder and awe, the strong directive hand of God throughout your life, coaxing and comforting, powerful and victorious.

Through trial after trial, he waited on me. He waited on me. He waited. In suffering, he refined me and redeemed me. And in the divine, in his perfect timing, he placed his gentle hand down and performed miracle after miracle.

Through him I am new again.

    Chapter 1

‘Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.’ Matthew 10:29

My life began on the hot dusty streets of Alexandria in Egypt. Born right in the middle of the religious war, my parents told me that it was a miracle I survived.

Religious extremism was at a fever pitch, and it wasn’t long before my Greek Orthodox Christian parents were forced to flee. Like so many before them, with their tiny daughter in hand, they boarded the boat to Australia.

The trip over was harsh. Packed with adults and children with not much to do or eat, the atmosphere was tense. It wasn’t long before people began to get sick. At only 6 months old and tiny in frame, I succumbed very quickly, developing a virus that swiftly turned into bronchial pneumonia. With literally hundreds of people to care for, the ship’s doctor was pragmatic in his approach, serving the strongest first.

My condition had deteriorated very quickly, and I was brought before him, my little chest heaving laboriously, slowly up and slowly down. Seeing no hope and thinking his time was better spent with someone else, the busy doctor turned away from my parents telling them it would soon be over for me.

As the doctor left, my father erupted with anger and frustration. Desperate to save me, he stormed through to the captain’s quarters knowing there was an oxygen tank stored there.

The captain, stressed from trying to keep order and sickness under control, and outraged at my father’s assault on his quarters, took one look at me in my mother’s arms and told my father to put me overboard. There was to be no wasting of the precious oxygen on me.

The captain’s arrogance was a like a red rag to a bull, and very quickly, it turned physical. My father launched himself, and the two men began grabbing and screaming, yelling and pointing, punching and pulling, and all the while, tears rolled down my mother’s face as I gave my last breaths.

It is at this point that I pause the scene and look back at this moment in time to glory at God’s power and wisdom. Over my life, I have never enjoyed my father’s hair trigger temper, but on this occasion, as he always does, God lifted his hand and used this weakness for good.

Back in the captain’s quarters, the two grown men were still ripping into each other. It was out of control and Satan was loving it. In the midst of this madness and hell on earth, as my last breath fell, finally, God lowered his hand.

The fight instantly calmed, the oxygen was handed over, and a makeshift oxygen tent was hastily rigged up. From what I have been told, there was little hope left for me. Although I had already stopped breathing, God had his hand on me.

While the enemy, Satan, wanted me dead, God had a plan for my life. The first miracle occurred. In that moment, as the oxygen seeped into my lungs, God breathed life into me.

As an adult, I thank God for my dad’s persistence and love for me. I believe in the power of prayer, and I am sure that my mum and dad were furiously praying for my life.

I was too young to know the importance of prayer then. This came much later.

As with the sparrow and every living creature on this earth, God loved me. Every hair on my head and every bone in my body. I was his and he waited on me.

    Water Colour on Paper

This painting questions the starting point of all life. The alpha is: ‘how it all began’. The painting makes us contemplate our origin and destination. It has themes of creation and pre-existence.

    Chapter 2

‘Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.’ Colossians 3:20

Like many migrants, my parents had their struggles adjusting to life in a foreign country. The new language, the struggle to find work, paying the bills, and fit into a new community again. It was especially hard for my mum. At 15 years old and really only a child herself, she must have felt very isolated.

Dad was a hard-working man, tough and resilient, and totally driven. He was not one for sentiment or affection. He was entirely focused on providing for his family, finding work, learning the language, and getting his Egyptian qualifications recognised. His tenacity soon got results, and a string of jobs followed.

Buoyed that he was finally on the employment ladder and making progress, he worked hard all day and continued to attended school at night, so for much of the time, Mum was on her own.

It wasn’t long before Mum was pregnant again, and soon after their arrival in Australia, my precious sister, Anne, was born. Over the next five years, my adorable brothers arrived and the family was complete—perfectly balanced with two girls and two boys. By this time, Mum had settled into the community
