    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I offer grateful and abundant thanks to all those who have helped me along my pathway of spiritual and shamanic knowledge. To Allan Francis, through whom the guides would speak to me, to Cheryl Maddock of the Australian Shamanic Centre, for all that I learnt from her. To the many writers of Celtic shamanism, but more importantly thanks to my guides and guardian animals in the spiritual realm. I am indebted to them all and give them my love.

As Cheryl taught me, I ask all who read this to journey with love in their heart.

    THE SHAMAN’S JOURNEY

W hen did I know that I was on a shamanic jou rney?

I didn’t suddenly think, ‘I am a shaman. Let’s do it!’ No, it gradually grew from when I was young and I discovered that my understanding of life, of gently walking on the Earth, was a shamanic way of living.

There was one time, when I was actually at a Spiritualist retreat, we had to go and touch or hug trees and then report back what we felt, heard, thought, etc., and no one seemed to have anything to say, and I felt silly when I said, ‘I felt strength.’ But the convenors were really happy with my answer as I had apparently contacted the energy of the tree.

We are all a part of Nature in our own way, like cogs in a wheel, and without each one of us, the wheel wouldn’t turn. So from feeling that in the overall scheme of things we are very insignificant, we actually have a very important role to play. We would be notably missed if we weren’t here.

Shamanism is the most ancient spiritual practice of all and is a journey, a spiritual journey of the self, on the path of love and harmony.

The focus is not on the destination but on the journey itself, on doing and being, experiencing and knowing.

It is a way of beauty and balance, a path of the heart that enfolds the entire natural world.

The shamanic relationship with spirituality is simply ‘going along for the ride’. When we mount the rhythms of life, we should allow the horse to take us where it wants to go. This is the essence of moving with and experiencing a spiritual life.

The shaman has travelled from the past, into the present, and will journey into the future.

He brings knowledge he gained in the past, to use in the present, and what he learns in the present he will take into the future.

For the shaman, everything is alive and possesses a spirit; everything is part of creation and is equal.

Shamans serve the people and the spirits, forming a bridge between the two, for they experience different levels of existence and learn to work with the energies around them.

The shaman works with the powers of Nature, coming into harmony with all that is around and so finds meaning, purpose,
