INTRODUCTION
Mother Mary Lange, OSP
A Woman of Faith and Courage
1794-1882
Before Elizabeth Clarissa Lange came to the United States from Santiago de Cuba, she heard the Voice of God. When one hears the Voice of God, it is not to be ignored. Some people call it a vocational call. Whatever Elizabeth Lange was doing or where she was when she heard God’s voice, it impelled her to heed it. She eventually found her way to Maryland. I wonder what she was thinking when she heard this call. Getting ready for her journey, Elizabeth had to decide what clothing she would take and she would discard. Hats were worn in those days, and hat boxes would take up lots of space, so she had to decide to give these away as well. Did she have a trunk, or did she use several suitcases? This is not known. My grandmother had a huge trunk that she carried with her whenever she traveled from Texas to Louisiana between her son, my uncle, and her daughter, my mother. This trunk had drawers that held quite a few things. There was even a place for hanging things. I wonder if Elizabeth had a trunk and, if so, if it was like this one. Then again, she may have taken two trunks. Who knows? My next query is, was she planning to just visit, or had she planned on staying? Many of these questions will never be answered of course since Elizabeth was such a no-nonsense person. It may have been a possibility that she was going to go back home to Cuba to her mother, Annette Lange. It is not certain how she arrived at the ship she would take on the day of her departure. Was there a large entourage to see her off, or were there only close friends and a few relatives?
How many days did it take her
