FOREWORD

When Bill asked me to do this I was taken back a bit, but since I have known Bill for some 20 years from our first meeting in Squaw Valley for a 49ers event, to trips together in Napa Valley, to his home in the Bay area and in Nashville, to even allowing Bill on my tour bus for a short 3 gig stint. One thing I am sure of is his persistence like mine, is relentless. Like myself his life is spent on the road, which in itself takes a certain mind set. I have seen how he prepared for not only issues pertaining to the San Francisco 49er Foundation, (who hired me 3 times to perform at affairs), but also in his business dealings, both in the wine industry and more recently in the spirits business, his company had one of their brands prominently displayed on my tour bus for rolling advertising. Just as I need to fine tune my craft with constant playing of the guitar, and keeping a pad and paper close by for that next song idea, the principles of preparation and persistence and certainly team building, all apply to both of our life’s journey.

Bill has asked if I might write a foreword that encapsulated how this booklet/book and its key points applied to my life’s journey. As a professional athlete, I had a foundation built from high school, through my years at UCLA in terms of strength training that continued all through my years in the NFL. The bigger aspect I see throughout the book is a reference to Goal setting and TEAM. During my tenure with the 49ers and to the same point with the great UCLA teams we set a finite Goal in the beginning of every season. In college that was to win our conference and go to the Rose Bowl. In my senior season we did that and beat #1 Ohio State. As a professional we did the same Goal setting with the Super Bowl and Lombardi trophy as our only acceptable goal. We went there 3 times during my
