About this ebook

Islamic State: The Coming Storm is a critical analysis of the missteps made by the United States and Western Europe in managing and carrying out the war against radical Islam and the ramifications of our nations failure to act in a more forceful manner against this threat.

An understanding of our enemy is crucial to the development of a coherent policy to eradicate the threat posed by global jihadists, including the members of the Islamic State. In fighting this new war, the United States must align itself with Russia and its former republics. Difficult choices will need to be made to combat an enemy focused on spreading terror and destabilizing governments in the Middle East and Europe.

Unless the United States and its allies look to the historical causes of this conflict, understand and analyze the cultural and religious divide, and root out the genocidal practices of Islamic militants, the world will continually suffer horrific attacks at the hands of these groups. Simply put, terror will be the new norm.

    DEDICATION

T his work is dedicated to my family and friends who stood ready to assist me as I wrote, researched, and explored the themes and topics discussed herein. These include my wife, my son, my mother, and the following friends – Doug Cullum, Robert Hall, Clifford Muldoon, Al Klar, Blake Brock, Don Barnett, Tom Morrison, Mitch Currey, Dick Knight, Rod Heller, and the world’s most organized person Marcie Mills. Marcie receives the depth of my gratitude as she spent countless hours revising and editing my manuscript before it was submitted for publication. Robert must also be given kudos as without his support, this pamphlet would not be published. Additionally, I am grateful for the family and friends that God has placed in my life to provide me inspiration, patiently listen, and shower me with love and kindness that can never be re paid.

    PROLOGUE

T he inspiration for what I present in these pages can be directly attributed to an ardent American patriot and a man who rose to the challenge of his time – Thomas Paine. It was his words 240 years ago that called colonists to rise against the repression of their personal liberties. Since the days of Thomas Paine, the threat posed by Great Britain has been relegated to history and now Britain and the United States are stalwart allies. The new menace that the world now faces is far greater and finds its roots in an epidemic of radicalized Islamic militants. It is these radicalized militants who wish to impose upon the world their own forms of cruelty, tyranny, usurpations, abuse, and deprivations. I ask those who love liberty and freedom to read this work with the mindset that we must not fear those who attempt to subjugate the world. Rather, it is our duty to ensure that we meet this threat with action and purpose to secure liberty, religious tolerance and peace for generations to come.

    PREFACE

I t was a quiet Saturday in the spring of 2006. My father had recently died at the age of sixty and I needed to keep my mind focused on the life around me. I was in a state of misery, as the only man on whom I could rely without hesitation or question was now gone. Nothing would be the same. However, on this Saturday, I was called by one of my dear friends, Colonel Vincent Fonke in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Colonel Fonke graciously asked me to be the keynote speaker for the annual meeting of the North Carolina Association of Ex-American Prisoners of War. The topic Colonel Fonke wanted me to discuss was the current American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the lead up to the same. In other words, how did the United States and the world move forward from the September 11th attacks, and what were some of the root causes of the issues now facing the world in Central Asia and the Middle East?

When discussing how to address the topic, we decided I could not go back to the founding of Judaism, Christianity or Islam, or the Crusades. I certainly could not go back to anything else distantly removed in time from our current state of affairs. Colonel Fonke had chosen me to deliver the address. We had become friends in 2002. He became sort of a surrogate grandfather since all of my grandparents were already gone and he was the closest I would have to one since their deaths. Because I held a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science and my Juris Doctor, the Colonel thought I fit the bill. I was humbled.

The task I had been assigned was not an easy one. At most, I had forty minutes to compress very difficult topics into digestible pieces while ensuring I did not bore my intended audience. Most of these men and women were members of the Greatest Generation who had seen firsthand the horrors of war. I on the other hand, was a civilian who only had a short stint in Army R.O.T.C. during my time at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I knew nothing of warfare from a firsthand experience. In other words, I was a wet-behind-the-ears civilian. The only thing I knew of combat came from the dozens of World War II veterans I had interviewed up to that time regarding their combat experiences during the war.

My wife, a very supportive, loyal, and loving partner gave me her undivided attention as I wrote and re-wrote my speech. Both she and Colonel Fonke heard portions of my talk ad-infinitum. They were good critics who were focused on what I would present to the larger audience. The one thing I knew for sure was that I had to leave an impression on my audience at the beginning. How would I accomplish that task? I thought for days and weeks on end.

On Friday, September 15, 2006, my wife Janna and I were frantically getting ourselves ready as we had to drive ninety miles from our home in Wake Forest to Fayetteville and the waiting members of the North Carolina Association of Ex-Prisoners of War. The clock was ticking and time was passing. Our drive was uneventful as we made our way along I-95 to meet the Fonkes’
