How It All Started
Woogleboogle, what a strange name, where did it come from? To be honest, I don’t know. I had been writing little short stories to amuse my two granddaughters in Australia. Then one day, I think I was sitting out in the conservatory, when the name popped into my head, I scribbled the name down on a piece of paper and promptly forgot all about it. I got into the habit of jotting down these little ideas because, my memory being what it is, I will have forgotten them later on. This works well unless I’m in the car driving. Now, let’s get back to the Woogleboogle. Then, one day I was clearing up all the bits of scrap paper, when I came across the name Woogleboogle again.
I thought there might be a little story for my granddaughters here. I had no idea what a Woogleboogle was – the name sounded like a musical instrument to me – but I found it hard to think of a story about a musical instrument. So I invented a mythological being living on an island surrounded by other islands, with many mythological creatures living on them. With a name like Woogleboogle, I decided that their mouths should be trumpet-shaped and their whole body geared up to produce these wonderful musical notes as their means of communicating with each other.
I thought, This will make a nice little story, but I seem to have struck a chord with my youngest granddaughter, and Woogleboogle
became her favourite story. I’m not sure whether it was the illustration of the Woogleboogle that first caught her imagination or the story, but it became a firm favourite of hers, and when I’m over there, she likes me to read it to her.
My wife convinced me to write some more Woogleboogle stories, which was a little daunting at first, as I had never thought of this as a collection of stories and had no idea of how I was going to run with it. The next story I wrote was, The King’s Birthday
, letting the inspiration take me where it wanted to go. It was like a great slap on the back when my other granddaughter said she thought I should get these published.
So I hope you enjoy reading these stories, as much as I have had fun in writing them, and know as much as I do about Woogleboogles now. It’s, been an education finding out what they were capable of and what they got up to.
I dedicate this book to my Granddaughters Rio and Kisch

Woogleboogles’ Island
In days gone by, when the world was young, there were many strange and wondrous beasts wandering the lands, but there were none stranger than the Woogleboogles. Who were the Woogleboogles? Well, I’ll tell you! they stood about four feet tall, had legs and feet like wallabies, a big belly and a straight back, short stubby
