True Love - Charles J. Carlucci

    One

    The First Meeting

Steve Lagrossa was a handsome man of Italian descent. He was born in Queens, New York, on April 18, 1965, under the sun sign Aries, and he was in his forties (forty-three, to be exact). He had kept his dark-brown hair short and trimmed, and he had a clean complexion, with no facial hair, with blue eyes that sparkled in the sunshine. He wasn’t too tall—maybe about five feet, six inches—and carried a little extra weight. At the time of this story he was living in Mineola, New York.

Mineola is a village in Nassau County, New York. The name is derived from a Native American word meaning a pleasant place. The grassy flat central part of Long Island has originally been named Hempstead Plains, and in the nineteenth century, various communities have been started there. One of them has been called Hempstead Branch and, finally, Mineola.

He lived in a first-floor apartment that overlooked a generous-sized backyard. It had all the essentials of a home—a kitchen, a living room and dining room, two bedrooms, and of course, a bathroom. He had a very lucrative job, working as a construction estimator for ten years for a very prestigious outfit.

It was a Friday afternoon, and he left work a little earlier to beat the rush hour crowd. He awaited the arrival of his train to Mineola from New York’s Penn Station. The commute door-to-door was well over an hour, but at least he got to nap and catch up on his sleep both ways. He had no plans for the night and decided to just relax and take it easy after his long week at work. The next stop was his, and he rose from his seat and proceeded to stand by the train’s doors so he could make a quick exit. The train slowed as it came to his stop. Abruptly he vacated his ride and continued his journey home, which was a mere ten-minute walk. This seemed to be the only exercise that he would get during the week to and from work.

After his effortless walk, he reached his final stop, home. He removed his overcoat then his suit. He then put on his sweats, planning to enjoy the comforts of his apartment. Not feeling too hungry, he made himself a sandwich and ate alone at his dining table. Though he was alone at that moment, with no female companion, he was content with his life. A date here and there would do him just fine right now, especially after his divorce from his wife, Joan, their marriage lasting only a year, when she had decided to have a little extra fun.

What can I do? he said, speaking aloud. He had no plans, so he decided to just rest on his couch, watch some TV, or maybe go online and visit one or two dating sites.

    He chose the latter.

He sat at his desk and searched the web. He contemplated one site and decided to investigate it. It was called Hook Up Now. He registered and placed his profile on the site with a picture; he hadn’t been on the site very long, but he already noticed one particular woman that he admired.

    Steve read her profile:

Cynthia Williams—I am a woman who wants a real and trusting relationship. I’m divorced and have two daughters. We presently live in Princeton, New Jersey. I am fifty-one years old, born on April 10, 1957. I have long brown hair that matches my eyes. I am five feet, one inch, and I have a thin, athletic figure and am looking for an honest and trusting relationship. I prefer watching movies, relaxing in each other’s arms, going to the theatre, or reading. I do enjoy spending time with the one I love. I enjoy traveling. I do smoke, and if you don’t, I hope you’ll tolerate it. If we do meet, we can talk some more.

Her picture alone piqued is curiosity. She was a stunning woman, Steve thought to himself. What could he lose by chatting with this pretty woman? He felt an instant attraction to her posted photos, and she carried a smile on that appealing face of hers that showed off her pearly whites. Little did he know it would remain in his memory for years to come. So what if she is a bit older than me? he thought. She had very young-looking features to her adding to his enchantment.

Steve, being curious, remained online and did more web surfing to find out the compatibility of the two Aries sun signs. His search yielded him the following information:

    Aries Man and Aries Woman

The Aries woman is immediately drawn to the Aries man as she recognizes her own independent and fearless spirit. The Aries woman wants to be chased, and the Aries man is all too happy to oblige. It can be a perfect match. The potential problem with this relationship is that there are two impatient, selfish souls. The Aries man and woman are so busy pursuing their own desires they forget it takes two to tango. The dating game can turn into a battle over who is number one. As long as these two have separate time to be individuals, they’ll have little trouble keeping the fire burning in a relationship. And of course, you can count on some passionate sex.

That was all Steve needed to read; he was sold on the idea of meeting her. With a few conversations during the week they decided to get together.

    * * *

As he pondered to himself, he thought he was crazy to make the trip out to New Jersey. It was about a one-and-a-half-hour trip, and he must be out of his mind to travel that distance for a relationship when there were plenty of women close by. In any account, the way his nature was, he would make his date feel comfortable and would make the evening enjoyable for both of them and see where it would go from there.

Steve arrived at his destination after his enduring travel. He parked his car in a garage and then walked to the restaurant. It was named Frank’s Pub, a quaint but elegant eating house. He sat at the bar and ordered a
