About this ebook

This book was compiled due to a request from a university lecturer at Brighton University in the year which I think was 1998. I was at that time a student studying interior architecture, and the request until now was never complete as I was never very good at meeting deadlines, much to my detriment. Anyway, the question that was given to me was the difference between architecture and buildinga question that at that time I was unable to answer and still cant. However, in order to answer this question, I embarked on a journey of research into the realms of architectural philosophy and writings, which took many years as the more I read, the more confused I became.

    PREFACE

This book was compiled due to a request from a university lecturer at Brighton University in the year which I think was 1998. I was at that time a student studying Interior Architecture, and the request until now was never complete as I was never very good at meeting deadlines much to my detriment. Anyway, the question that was given to me was the difference between architecture and building- a question that at that time I was unable to answer and still can’t. However, in order to answer this question I embarked on a journey of research into the realms of architectural philosophy and writings which took many years as the more I read the more confused I became.

I became confused mostly by the discipline of architectural writing and the inherent futility of the discourse itself as architecture is the construction of buildings under set parameters such as economics, use, longevity of building, etc…

This led me on to assess the built environment as a whole in high density cities or large town developments which posed questions to me such as why buildings are where they are, why a lot of them are still in use, or there at all. A landscape assessment is what culminated in an imaginary metropolis which is this book- Pulse, Code, Modulation.

The main title is meant to be a deconstructive play on words which I think was rather appropriate as the book itself is difficult reading in that it is not for the uninitiated. I personally like to think of as something incomplete, confusing much like the built environment.

The sub-title is something set against the book cover which again is an image to show the obscure context in which humans inhabit and live in space by the paths they choose to follow, and the decisions they make.

I hope that you like reading this book and find it thought provoking and interesting. It is my first attempt at trying to do something which I personally found very difficult.
