About this ebook
This is not an ordinary book . . . it exists through grace. By the time I found the metaphysical teaching called Science of Mind in 1989, the local church had grown from a few people in a living room to about 175. Still meeting in an array of hotel ballrooms and clubs, the principles for successful living shared every Sunday were already deeply held beliefs in my life, so it immediately felt like home. One weekend we invited the elders of the church over to discuss church history and what a rich history it was. An afternoon with Bill and Win Siefert, Bruce and Dorothy Johnson, Marilyn and Joe Vondracek, Bob and Dorothy Huntoon, Harry and Frances Bleile, and Rev. James and Rev. Andrea Golden was magical.
How many ministers have taken their congregation skydiving? White water rafting? On wilderness treks? How many change lives through deep introspection at family retreats in rustic cabins deep in the woods? How many invite congregants and friends to pound thousands of nails for an old fashioned barn raising to build a sanctuary? Whether the name was the Science of Mind Center, Church of Religious Science, Spiritual Enrichment Center, or Center for Spiritual Living, over the years we all learned to jump into life in one new way or another. The list of events by year presented in the appendix creates a picture of a community that loves to laugh and play together, always mindful of doing their spiritual practices. What a life! What a community! What a history!

This book is nonsense, take a look at my factual review.
Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2017
Let me tell you the real story of this dysfunctional place. These people live in La La land. They believe in everything and they believe in nothing except for what they make up, like changing the name of this place every time they got complaints.
First of all, these Golden so called "magical founding ministers" in Redding created the "church of family destruction" not some community of good as they suggest. They promoted each other to deal with people who had real problems and pushed some of them off the edge or in many cases to leave their families.
Now they don't want to discuss that the chief founder "spiritual leader" of this place, ran off with one of his wife's "church" friends leaving his kids in the dust and all of his followers. How Magical is that...The magical Andrea was a total dysfunctional in so many ways, one example was of her conducting what they called "marriage counseling retreats", they were not licensed counselors then, they took it upon themselves to guide people with senseless advise. They also arranged play excursions on cruses and encouraged people who were still married or in separation for any number of reasons, to go off with the people who they liked because they were contributors. They catered to people who could pay for these fancy trips. I believe that they focused on people who were class contributors.
It was all about finding troubled people or people in-distress and coax them to attend their expensive classes and then have them become bonded to their inner circle. The "special people", hand picked by Andrea, became what they called "Divine Sisters" and sometimes met at the round house which is sitting in the pond as you drive from Redding downtown to the mall. I filed many complaints against Andrea and a few of their so called therapist for immorally and what I believe illegally interfering in my marriage. Their support to break up my family, and I had a child with a disability, was unbelievable. Their are rules for therapist or even therapist want a bees, they followed none and they acted as some supreme authority's over many of the followers.
I had several communications with their so called "international compliance officer" at the so called home office? He hid all of my formal statements and discarded them. What proved out was that they trashed my very detailed list of what Andrea was doing and then washed them away without even a comment. I asked to go before the board of this Redding place and they denied me. Stated as a right in their charter. They went on lock-down. I was not the only victim of their ways.
After this I believe that this Andrea fled. I believe the compliance officer? stepped in and took over this Redding place until I herd they pushed him out? This person was so unprofessional in his dealings with me as a so called compliance officer, that people who I consulted with were stunned that my detailed list of issues would not be considered cause for her review and dismissal. How dysfunctional is there over-site of Ministers when a person with pages of facts against a lead "ministers" misconduct, filed with formal complaints become hidden and discarded. As a person with community integrity and a lifetime of professional dealings, I could not get a heartbeat of review of my serious statements because of this dysfunctional oversight person proving that the ministers of this movement are accountable to no one.
Even tho I do not believe this was a cult, they sure fit some of the definitions: 1, special groups that only a few could attend with the leaders, 2, no over-site to so called ministers activities. 3, No discipline of any kind for ministers and management mis-conduct. I would just say looking back, this Andrea did everything she could to encourage the destruction of my family and marriage. People who know me well were shocked and still are.
I am sick to see someone paint this place and history as an honorable spiritual community and now they paint a prissy history without the facts. I talked to other people who's life's were destroyed affiliating with this place and or had family members attending. They captivated people with their nonsense healing and guidance, what they called " treatments". Their structure of promoting unskilled people to be practitioners destroyed family's as a way of life and the lectures they conducted were always odd focusing about "personal happiness" never about family building and support. Their theme was, if you have a marriage issue? just flee and find someone else. I am not taking about horrific issues. I hope people buy this book and run like the wind once they learn what this movement is all about.
I was so fortunate to get my wonderful son away from this place. The history of this place is so very dysfunction and misguided, I would argue " it is not a church in any way," this place is one of sadness and represents total abuse of the role of what people think are ministers and leaders.
One story I will leave you with to offer how dysfunctional these people were back then is in the form of a registered complaint to the California Therapist License Board about one of the key people affiliated with this place Andrea and these Divine Sisters.
A divine sister therapist was talking with a client of hers, a close friend of mine a Doctor medical professional. I was told by him that he was discussing some of his personal issues with his new therapist, the therapist then suggested during this session that she knew of a wonderful woman and that he should try and date. This person was "my wife" at the time, this therapist was her friend because of this divine sister relationship, she was promoting that my "my wife" still married at the time could be available to him because she knew her well and would like to help her connect. The stories of these leader people in this group in this small town is endless. This is a 100% true sad story about the gall and illegal activities of this leading member therapist of this place.
After this encounter my Doctor friend called me as said you cannot believe what just happen. Together we filed a registered complaint with the therapy license board about the conduct and advice of this therapist. Just one story of this place, people abusing their positions, trying to fix people up in counseling sessions. Playing family destruction, and supporting family destruction under this therapy spin.
My statements as to this place and facts which I offer are true and I know many others that are aware of the real story of this dysfunctional place. I guess the people there now want to hide the true history of this place. After 10 years of my recovering from my problems surrounding this place, I can only say, I saw this book by accident and I was overwhelmed to make this review. I could write my own book to challenge this publication but I am older now and so be it. I believe the evil people, most of them have moved on maybe? My son is clean gone from being near this place and after years of suffering and pain I still look back once in a while as to how these people operated. This is the Church of Family Destruction, my message and recommendation is stay away. 2017
Amen.

• those members and elders who spent an afternoon with me sharing stories about the church: Bill and Win Siefert, Bruce and Dorothy Johnson, Marilyn and Joe Vondracek, Bob and Dorothy Huntoon, Harry and Frances Bleile, and Rev. Dr. James and Rev. Dr. Andrea Golden;
• and my dear husband, Paul, who patiently supported me through this endeavor.
INTRODUCTION
The history of our Center is full of memories, those special times at family retreats, insights and personal growth in classes, working together to improve the facilities, creating special projects, and sharing life’s most poignant moments. Some may remember Church Lady, morning bugle, and retreat families or the joy of an old fashioned barn raising when we constructed the sanctuary. And the hours of laughter and love spent in landscaping, burning brush piles, or painting the labyrinth.
As a community we have celebrated the milestones of life together, both the joys and sorrows. We have delightfully watched the children of our church grow into adulthood and now another generation of children is growing in light and love. And isn’t it wonderful that we are blessed to have members of our original church with us today and all the wisdom and love they bring.
In the mid-1990s I interviewed several of our elders about the history of the church, which was quite an enlightening afternoon. Recently it was during the time I spent serving as Interim Co-Pastor / Administrator that I went through every box and file I could find to piece together the rest of the story. What follows contains many people, places, and events that you may not remember, but it paints a rich picture of this vibrant community that holds such a special place in our hearts.
A heart-felt THANK YOU to Larry Watters who sorted through boxes of old photos and scanned each one for this book and dozens more soon to be posted on the web site. My DEEP GRATITUDE to Dianne Brown who not only edited the manuscript for typos and grammar, but shook out the dust leaving a more lively refreshing narrative.
May you enjoy this special look at the history of our spiritual family!

HISTORY OF THE CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL LIVING, REDDING
1971
George and Marge Brenner and Linda Long started a Science of Mind study group in the Brenner’s home in Redding, California, and eventually moved it to a room in the Convention Center, followed by a move to a senior citizen’s hall. When the Brenners moved out of the area, they turned over the group to Harry (a retired PG&E Pit River Dam financial manager) and Edwina Magill to continue the meetings.
When Harry decided to stop running the organization, they hired Rev. Frances Laird from United Church of Religious Science (UCRS), and she conducted meetings at the Masonic Hall on Lake Boulevard. Rev. Laird had a Good 5
radio program every Sunday morning, and her treatments were very well done and effective, but it wasn’t long before problems arose. Rev. Laird’s lectures on Sunday got shorter and shorter, and the number of songs increased until one Sunday she gave a 5-minute lecture. Bruce Johnson and Bob Huntoon were on the Board of Trustees at the time. There were more problems and board members talked with Rev. Frances about it, but she felt there was no need to change her methods. Bob wrote a letter asking for her resignation and she refused, so the board resigned en masse. The next night the ex-board held the first organizational meeting of the new study group at the Redwood Mobile Home Park in the Penthouse meeting room.
The new group hired new ministers, Rev. Hal and Rev. Rosaline Hockett of UCRS. The Hocketts held services in a building on Bechelli Lane, across from Bartell’s Burgers by the bowling shop. Doris Payne bought a piano and took care of providing the music. Religious Science International (RSI) provided songbooks. Joe Vondrachek purchased 100 chairs with blue vinyl covers, and for a donation of $10 - $12 you could get your name engraved on a small brass nameplate fixed to the top of the chair.
1976
By September 26, 1976, the group was meeting in the Women’s Improvement Club on West Street. The next move was on October 3, with twenty metaphysicians meeting at the Ponderosa Inn for what would become the Redding Science of Mind Center Society. Bob Huntoon was the temporary leader, and Dr. Hewitt from Sacramento was the first speaker. At the second organization meeting, Ken Miller was named President.
During this time, the UCRS kept meeting on Bechelli Lane and little by little those members came over to what would become the Religious Science Church.
1977
In January, the group moved to the Redding Women’s Club. In February, the group collected 40 signatures and applied to RSI to be established as an RSI Society, which was approved. On March 10, Dr. Leo Fishback presented the Society Charter to Edwina and Harry Magill. A society organization could not have a minister, so they were determined to get full church status, which would require 75 members. The group selected a slate of trustees and created bylaws, and a week later decided to start functioning as a church and elected a formal Board of Trustees.
On February 9, the Record Searchlight newspaper ran a great article entitled, Seeing Oneness with the Creator,
which read:
F.H. Harry
Magill, leader of the Redding Science of Mind Center Society, believes in the perfection of mankind. I try to help the society’s members understand their spiritual perfection,
he said. Perfection is realized when one recognizes oneness with the Creator. There is only one mind, and everyone shares that mind—the mind of God.
The Redding Science of Mind Center is not a church, but a Society,
according to Magill. It began October 1, at the Women’s Improvement Club on West Street. We don’t have a pastor yet, but we are working on it,
Magill said. We have contacted the Religious Science International Headquarters, and they’re helping us in our search. We expect to have a pastor in about six months.
In the meantime, Magill takes the pulpit for the Society’s 50 members. He and his wife Edwina are practitioners,
licensed by the headquarters in Filmore to give treatments for the betterment of their fellow men.
Our treatments are not the kind given by medical doctors,
Magill said. "We believe that thoughts cause sickness and other problems. By applying truth, especially the truth of
