Was interesting book makes me want to read other biographies of film stars of the area. Was broken into numerous chapters and sections of her life. Was not terribly detailed all in all but seemed to offer insights into how she felt. Told in a first person perspective as if she was dictating the book.

H er name is Bonnie Booker, and outside this dank cabin, endless flakes of snow flurried and then fell to the ground or stuck to the windows as time slowly ticked out the destiny that she was not aware that she had chosen. She could not even have dreamt the path her life would take. Each moment created a thread in the tapestry of life that would remain indelible for all time.

Bonnie’s father was John Conway’s foreman, and her family lived on his land. It was early spring of 1863, and Bonnie knew that she did not like to be poor.

The winds made whirring sounds way into the night. The gales caused her to shudder as she tried to light a fire in a dusty brick fireplace and put on a kettle of water on the grate. The wind blew the fire out, but she persisted to bend over the hearth re-lighting it and watching it smolder into the blackened wood. The fire moved as if it were slowly writing on the wood making swirling designs and then fading into a faint stream of charcoal and smoke.

She went to the mirror and washed her face. Her hair was flaxen nearly platinum blonde, and her eyes were medium violet blue. She was the oldest daughter in her family. There were nine children.

All of her dreams, she thought, hinged on the man who was coming. She was poor, and he was wealthy.

A large horse and buggy slowly straddled the winding dirt road and came to a stop beside the cabin, and out jumped a middle-aged man. He had a bristled mustache and beard. His dark brown suit was ordered from a store up North. It had a satin lining, trousers and matching vest with a pocket on each side for a watch and chain.

How are you, Miss Bonnie? The man asked. Sorry I haven’t been able to see you for several weeks, but I have been busy with the cattle this time of year. They’re so susceptible to disease or either they’re calving, and Miss Nettie hasn’t been feeling well.

Bonnie thought who cares about Nettie or the cows getting sick. She could only think about her own expectations and her own problems, for she was pregnant.

I’m pregnant, Bonnie said.
