The Phoenix Chronicles - Alec Martin

    PROLOGUE

The man awoke from his comatose like state on the floor of his office with a startling gasp; he clenched his side as pain shot throughout the area above what he thought was his liver. He rolled on his back and laid motionless on the floor as he stared up at the ceiling. He closed his eyes and blinked rapidly as the room started to spin, and when it finally ended he looked around to see that his office was in a state of which a battle had previously taken place. The scent of gunpowder was heavy in the air, bullets and cartridges littered the floor, there were so many holes in the walls that even if the light bulb wasn’t shattered he wouldn’t need it, his desk was shattered in half from most likely an object going through it, however it could have been due to something else. His mind explodes in pain as flashes of a battle forced its way into his memory. He felt a breeze that wouldn’t have come from an open window or a door so it meant a hole from an explosion was near, and a sword handle on the floor by him. A holo-tape recorder catches his eye. A note with the words Play Me written on it was attached to it. He reaches his hand forward, grabs the tape recorder, and presses play; he then smiles as he hears a familiar voice.

    CHAPTER 0

A breath of air was heard, puffing through the recorder. The voice took a couple a breaths and finally spoke with a light Russian accent. Where should I start? Why don’t I start with the info we both know? For the past two months, twenty-three hours, and fifty-six minutes, I have avoided death on three different planets, killed many of my fellow assassins, fell in love with my target, and I killed both of my best friends. The voice paused for a minute and scuffling is heard in the background.

"For eight years, I used to be the best assassin for the group AGAST, until I was put on the list with a bounty so high that my friends became my enemies, and the way that I am about to go down would have not been the way I would have liked, or planned. How I was thrown into this mess is still racing through my head; right in the middle of a firefight between the Earth Security Federation and AGAST-" The voice stopped once more and more scuffling is heard, it sounded as if the recorder was being put down. Hold on let me take a minute to think, ha-ha, I’m sure my buddy wouldn’t mind if I smoke one of his cigars, he always loved these. A lighter is heard in the background and an inhale with a long sigh is heard.

Ok now where were we; Ahh yes, the Earth Security Federation or ESF was the new government that spanned across many planets and universes, and AGAST was a group of assassins that was oppressed for being who they were and for years the two sides have claimed earth and space as their many battle grounds but they are now tearing at each other’s throat. However my story doesn’t start two months, twenty-three hours, and fifty… . eight minutes ago. It starts years ago, A puff of smoke was blown into the recorder.

    CHAPTER 1

"I was 18 at the time and the morning just seemed to go so perfect. There was no fighting no yelling, my step mother even helped me get ready for my graduation. The last thing I remember before I left was me telling them that I went to school for the past ten years to become an assassin. My father was an ESF captain and he wasn’t happy that I chose the other side of the law. I left them for the last time angry at my father and step mother. The date was July 27, 2165, a date I will never forget; I can’t believe that it’s been eight years.

The black haired kid walked up and sat in the chair, of course today he wasn’t a kid anymore; he was set on being adult as he could be, because this was one of the most important days in an assassin’s life. Little did he know it would be far more important than anything before. His emotionless grey eyes flashed as a few lights hit his face then focus down on his hand where a tattoo was being inked in. He looked at the tattoo and then back at the shadowed man.

Prisyaga ubiytsa yavlyayetsya odnim iz kotoroy budet ne tol’ko diktovat’, kak vy ustranite vash vrag, no, kak vy zhivetevsyu zhizn’. Vy sobirayetes’ raskryt’ svoi klyatvy, takim obrazom pokazyvaya svoyego istinnogo soglasovannosti. The kid translated the Russian in his mind. (The oath of the assassin is one of which will not only dictate how you eliminate your foe, but of how you live the rest of your life. You are about to reveal your oath, thus revealing your true coherence.)

With that he replied: Ya Teymos budet ubedit’sya, chtozlo dolzhno byt’ nakazano inevinnyh budet okazana pomoshch’, kogda nikto ne tam, chtoby pomoch’. Even though he was born Russian, he heard in his head the English words, it was one of the many flaws of having an English father. (I Teymos will make sure that the evil shall be punished and the innocent will be helped when no one is there to help.)

The brace released and Teymos clenched his arm and looked down to see his tattoo; a Phoenix. A man approached carrying a pillow in his hands and lying on the pillow was a box. This was one of the most important days of an assassin. He was receiving his signature weapons. AGAST assigned weapons perfectly made for the user. Since the assassin was trained over the years they knew how their brain worked and what was the best weapon suited for said person. Teymos opened the box and inside were two Beretta 92FS pistols with compensators. Teymos took a Beretta and looked it up and down appreciating it. It was very old fashion for the time but ammo had come a long way and it wasn’t so much weapons were advance but the things they launched were. He loaded a magazine, pulling the slide back and injecting a round into the barrel.

May Archangel Raphael protect you, now go and break your bonds with your family. Without another word Teymos grabbed the other pistol, injected the magazine and left the room, walking towards his home. "Breaking the bond, he thought, it proved as an assassin that you were truly one of theirs. You had devoted your life to one thing and one thing only to the brotherhood and to the art of assassination. You would stop at nothing to complete the mission and prove that you will do anything, even murder your own family. He may have told his family what he was, but no family knew about this part of the initiation.

    3:00 pm

An hour later the five foot eleven, one hundred and thirty five pound, blacked haired, eighteen year-old was a couple houses down from his. His mind was racing about what he was going to do. Accident or massacre? He then stopped as something tickled his hearing and he couldn’t make it out. He focused intently until he felt the power within him flow through his veins. His ears pricked, as he heard the faint sounds of begging, and his heart stopped as he heard three bangs followed by three flashes in the window. Without thinking he started running towards his house, his mission had changed from killing his family to saving them.

He took a deep breath and shot two rounds through the locks, when he burst into the house he saw two targets and he fired three shots each, hitting their target. Just as they fell one man popped out from behind the wall and shot Teymos in the arm. He leaned just enough back that the bullet just ripped at his arm’s flesh and burned like a hot poker dragging at his skin, but not a direct hit. The force of the bullet made Teymos lose his balance, and thought Must be loader ammo, which was a much heavier type of ammo and has a load of physical force. Most of the time weighing more than the gun in some cases. He refocused and as he was falling he rebounded and he shot twice and the two bullets hit in the center of the man’s chest, shredding chest cavity and splattering him on the wall. Teymos smirked, Enjoy the shredder ammo, shithead. He tore a piece of his shirt and tied it over the wound. He walked down the hallway, his eyes felt like they were on fire now and he could hear the blood rushing through his veins. Two men with masks and robes walked out of his younger sister’s room. One was sporting an assassin’s tattoo.

Damn she fought hard One man said to the other. Before the other man could respond a bullet flew through his skull and the man was pinned against the door frame.

Who sent you to kill my family and where’s my step mother? Teymos yelled at the man. The man looked surprised that even though that he was at least two times bigger than Teymos and he was being held rock steady, but he quickly changed his attention to the kids eyes, they were red, the hottest red he had ever seen. He didn’t know why but he was frozen still, he couldn’t move if he had wanted too and he couldn’t look away from those eyes.

You’re stupid Teymos; you were on your way to do the same thing we were about to do, what difference does it ma- Teymos shot the man in both his knees. The man winced and screamed at the pain.

Who sent you, or even better who hired you, that’s why it matters. Nobody knew this was coming except a handful of people. Someone wants me and my family dead and I need to know who! Teymos said as he pressed his pistol to the man’s temple.

Alright, but you have to protect me from them The man said to Teymos.

    I’m listening.

It was AGAST and a woman by the name of Anasta-

A bullet ripped through the man’s skull and Teymos rolled into the bathroom firing at the shooter Teymos saw in the corner of his eye. He quickly ejected the magazines and slapped two fresh ones in before he took off after the shooter. He turned the corner and was stopped by a pistol in his face.

So Anastasiya why did you do it, killed your family Teymos said with contained anger.

Teymos, why would anyone kill any other human being, other than for fun or revenge? She said with a thin evil grin.

You don’t mean… he tightened his grip on his pistol.

Yes of course I killed them for money! HA HA, why else would anyone kill someone, silly.

I never knew you could be such a cold bitch, Anastasiya.

Tsk, tsk, Teymos after all these years you can’t just call me mom? She said smiling again.

Because you backstabbing bitch, you’re not my mom! Teymos said right before a shot rang out from her pistol into
