    Blood Shed - Crystal Spillman

    Chapter One

    A Vampire’s Desire

The night was full and perfect with stars glistening high in the midnight sky. The sky was grey and pale. Light, shredded clouds covered only a few of those mystical stars while the rest glistened beautifully. The sound of birds calling filled the air and fell into the night.

There was a silence in that night, a comforting silence that was worth smiling upon. Something, I fear, I haven’t done in a very long time. I fear that I have not found much to smile about in my unending life. Eternity is a long time to live, especially if you have to live it alone.

The trees swayed to and fro in the brisk wind, performing their own silent dance for all to see in the distance. Their dance was a slow, swift dance that made them almost appear alive and human but, of course, not quite. They still were trees but their beauty has been brought to life by the motions of their dance.

Beyond those magnificent trees stood a high, glistening, slate cliff. It sparkled elegantly in the moonlight, like the glistening stars in the sky. A beauty for any eye to behold.

The cliff hung at an odd angle that made it appear crooked and somewhat unstable. In fact I imagine a mere human such as yourself would never dare to stand upon such a cliff for fear of losing your own life.

Black slate rocks rooted against the cliff, making it impossible for any human to even dream of climbing. There was a lake just below that fair cliff is sparkled elegantly in the moonlight. At the top of the cliff you could see light grass stretching its wings and a few trees dancing.

A wolf stood at the edge of the cliff. Pure snow-white fur hung about its shoulders as it tilted its head back and let out a sweet, gentle howl to the moon. It was a howl that would remind anyone of a gentle melody. A melody that told the story of a hollow, dark secret. A secret that no mere human could ever understand or know.

The wolf’s eyes were as black as the night itself and glistened with silent, broken tears. Tears for a nightmare it created long, long ago. It was a passage the wolf itself had not chosen but was forced to take. A story that became its life.

Mere humans could never understand such a harsh reality, for the truth of it is almost unbearable for anyone to hear. It’s almost unbearable for anyone to even imagine, but unfortunately, it is real.

The story begins innocent enough with a child.

A child, innocent and young, forced to destroy the very life it had grown to love. There is no evil or good in this story, it is simply the cruel harsh reality of it all. It is a choice that every vampire must make if they expect to survive. A choice to forget the life they lived and live forever never regretting the death they leave behind. A choice that for some may seem easy, but for most of us, it’s a choice we often regret.

This child was indeed unique because unlike many of us it was not vampire nor human, but something else. A great, powerful being that was created from the love of a vampire and a human.

It is often said that vampires are incapable of love but there is not always truth in this saying. This vampire who created this child was what you humans would have considered to be pure evil. The truth of the matter is he was no more evil than you or I; he just simply was a vampire.

Our story begins in a small quiet, distant ball room full of laughter and smiling humans. The year reflects somewhere in the late 1900s. It is late, around six thirty and all the high school graduates have come together to celebrate their last days together before they step off into the real world.

The room was lit fully by crystal lanterns that decorated the ceiling. All around, enchanting women stood in fine, elegant gowns, all far too dashing for any vampire to resist. Kale was one of the few vampires of our species who had been around since the beginning of our reign. He was indeed a very old vampire and he had seen more than any of us. As a vampire he was considered to be one of the fiercest and strongest of us all. It was no secret to any of us that Kale was one of the few vampires who relished in his power. He loved the glory and the power that came with it all, and never once did he ever feel the need to have any regrets. Who could blame him, when you’ve been a vampire for as long as he has the life is just as simple as breathing. He was more powerful than most of us. He could walk in the sunlight and he could transform into any creature he desiredsomething most of us can only dream of.

Today would be like every other day of his hunt. He would simply walk around and enjoy the party while he waited for his next meal ticket. He fit in with the crowd well enough appearing to be no more than in his early twenties, maybe even younger to some humans depending upon who was looking.

Kale glared at the women as they twirled across the dance floor; this is where the fun began. With a simple wink he could turn any fair maiden’s head. To him, they were like glass dolls easily swayed and easily broken. It is sad to think about when you consider the realities humans are powerless compared to our kind. We can easily kill them without any effort on our part. It’s like a human crushing an insect, it’s effortless, instant, and death is inevitable. Humans may give attempts to fight but it’s like an infant attempting to harm an adult. The effort is useless for they can cause us no harm or pain; our kind feels nothing.

To the human eye, he was young, handsome, and dashing with charm that could make any woman feel as if she were an angel. Most vampires of our kind have this gift above all others because it is a gift that allows us to lure humans such as yourselves without them realizing that there is danger in our eyes. Not that we actually needed such a gift to capture our prey. Our prey in truth is in fact helpless; they can’t outrun us, or fight us off. They can’t do anything except scream and beg uselessly. If you think about it too long you may find it sad because our prey in truth doesn’t have a chance.

Kale loved the idea of being able to make it quick, to be able to take their life away in the midst of a kiss. They would never even know what was happening. He loved the sweet taste of their lips and the feel of their blood coursing through his veins. It was a thrill that all vampires enjoy at one point in their eternal life. He thought he had everything any vampire could have dreamed of. Unfortunately, he never realized how fortunate humans are to have something that we, as vampires, will never have.

A fair maiden came into view, eyes of mystic blue and hair a snow-white blond. Her skin was a rare creamy white and her lips a full, vibrant red. She wore a white, sequent gown. It hung just past her shoulders and clung to her every curve. A beauty worthy of any vampire’s touch. Innocence lingered in her scent. The idea excited Kale. In this century he had grown to find innocence rare in the female species. Sadly, in this century, it is hard to find blood that is as pure as the snow, untarnished.

He approached her as he did all the others, with his charming smile and elegant sweet words from his lips. She looked at him as if he were an insect, a look he had never seen before but was intrigued by. Women always fell all over him but she seemed different. The woman was untarnished by his power; it had no effect on her. The idea frustrated Kale slightly, but not enough to change his course.

May I have this dance? he asked sweetly extending a hand toward her. A dance with death, as humans may call it.

She looked at his hand as if it were something repulsive. Her nose sort of crinkled and her eyes rolled in annoyance.

That’s really not necessary. She replied with the best fake smile she could manage behind her disgust.

Did I offend you in some way? he looked at her confused unable to hide his shock that a woman had actually found him repulsive. No woman had ever looked at him that way. Vampires are beautiful, with beauty that is far beyond anything a human is ever capable of holding. Our beauty is rare and so enchanting that most humans become astonished by our beauty and are unable to look away.

No, it’s just that I’m not your type. She struggled for the words it was almost impossible for her to think of a better excuse that wouldn’t completely hurt the poor gentlemen’s feelings. Kale found it almost impossible to contain his laughter at her lame excuse, especially considering he had only asked for a simple dancenothing more, nothing less.

I beg your pardon miss, but I only asked for a simple dance. I didn’t propose marriage.

The woman looked down toward the floor deep in thought, she’d done it again. She had treated another man like filth when all he had asked for was indeed only a dance. In her eyes, men were full of disappointment, a trait she knew well from her father. He never seemed to care about anything including her. Men had always been (and would always be) nothing but a simple waste of her time.

The woman looked up at the gentleman, it was only a dance no harm in that.

She held out her hands and slowly they began to glide across the floor. Violins played a gentle, slow tune as they danced, and for a moment, she almost forgot reality.

Do you have a name sir?

Why yes, don’t we all? She laughed at his mere joke. It’s Kale and yours is?

    Laura.

Laura… such a lovely name. he replied sweetly.

You’re so cute. Too bad it’s all wasted on me. Her words seemed somewhat vile, and Kale was shocked. Never had he heard a human belittle themselves as much as she just did.

Why do you say that? he replied softly while caressing a strand of her hair in his fingertips. I think you’re very beautiful.

Wow! You use that line on all the girls. Her voice tone was mocking and sarcastic, yet somehow it intrigued him. The music came to a stop, and Kale looked at her, almost speechless. And somewhere in the back of his mind, he found himself wanting to laugh. Perhaps all humans weren’t as frail and weak as he thought.

Her face, so enchanting, seemed to light up at the sight of his squirm. And at that moment he knew he wanted her. She turned to walk away and then Kale grabbed her arm and turned her to face him. He gazed into her deep-blue eyes so hard that Laura almost felt like he could see right through her, and her heart skipped a beat.

He stepped closer toward her, and to his surprise, she did not pull
