The Lion Continues - Joseph W Gadbois

    HIT MAN

A well-known criminal defense attorney was suspected of hiring a hit man to eliminate any and all his oppositions. He hated to lose in court. Besides, he guaranteed his clients a win when they went to court—something no one in their right mind would do.

It all started when he had lost several cases because of witnesses against his clients. He had stated to friends that he would not ever lose a case again because of witnesses. And he made good on that statement.

The killing of potential witnesses escalated into having people killed who witnessed the lawyer breaking the law and trying to get away with it. He wanted to make sure his reputation was never tarnished. A very vain man had to have everything go his way or he would get upset.

Besides witnesses, he wanted his wife and a car salesman done away with as soon as possible. He believed they were having an affair.

He requested that the hit man had to do the job immediately. He stated, I just want them dead. This included his wife. He passed fifty thousand dollars to the hit man to get the job done as quickly as possible.

His wife and the salesman were seen on several occasions coming out of a room in a shady local motel. They weren’t too careful as to who might see them. This affair had been going on for at least four years, and they felt safe. The lawyer husband only found out about the affair a few months ago.

The murders started with the first witness as he sat in his car reading the local newspaper. He was found by a security guard walking to his car parked three spaces beyond the witness’s car. The inside had been splattered with blood.

The parking garage had four floors, and the witness liked to park in the open on the top floor near the stairs and the elevator going down to ground level. A lot of people knew about his routine of sitting in his car to read his paper.

The bullet went through the windshield with a downward slant. It had hit him in the head. The parking garage was surrounded by tall office buildings and one apartment block. Perfect for a sniper to shoot from.

The second witness was found dead sitting up on a park bench. He had been reading a book. The witness sat at the same bench every day at about the same time. He liked to read books in the open air while having his lunch.

The shot had also come from a distance on a downward slant. There were a lot of tall buildings, both of business and apartments, that circled the park.

The wife and salesman were ambushed as they were leaving their usual motel room. They were leaving the room while still fixing their clothes. They were shot by a drive-by shooter.

Word of the sniper and the possible connection with the criminal lawyer reached the CONTROLLER by way of an area Senator. It is believed that the killing only took place in Massachusetts as far as they knew at the moment.

The sniper had begun bragging about his exploits and bragged about being the best sniper ever in the world, and he didn’t care who was listening. He stated that he wanted to be better than his instructor. Nobody had ever been able to outshoot him. His name was Sharky.

I was notified to take the sniper out at all costs before any more people were murdered. Supposedly, the sniper had four more names and had already been paid for their killings.

There wasn’t enough evidence that was available to take him to court and get a conviction. There were no witnesses. Just his bragging about the killings and his knowledge of the crimes and how the bodies were found, plus he knew about some things that were never released to the public or the press. Only the police knew.

So here I am on the tallest building that overlooks his penthouse porch where the lawyer has his coffee and breakfast every morning with his closest associates and the sniper. I knew who the sniper was. I had been his instructor at Fort Benning. We didn’t like each other because he couldn’t outshoot me no matter how much he practiced.

Having been a sniper myself in combat and then as an instructor, this would be a real easy job. There were eight hundred yards between me and the penthouse. I’ve made hits at almost a mile in combat.

After setting up my bolt-action Remington 700, I called the CONTROLLER to make sure that the hit was still on. He confirmed the hit and stated, Also take the lawyer out.

Okay, consider it done, was my reply, and I hung up.

Twenty minutes later, the sniper, the lawyer, and two other people were into their breakfast when I canceled out the lawyer. The sniper turned around to look in my direction. He had pure fright on his face when his head blew up. The other two people dove for the floor and crawled inside the apartment.

Before the police showed up, I was long gone. My disguise was that of an older man who could barely walk and needed a cane. Totally unnoticeable in today’s society.

In the room, I left two spent cartridges on the bureau with fingerprints from a criminal that had been executed almost forty years ago. This would keep the local police wondering what the hell was going on and who was behind the shooting.

The reporters asked, Where did those fingerprints come from if the person is dead? How can he be killing people now? I didn’t bother leaving my card this time.

The two witnesses that were with the lawyer and the sniper stated to the police that before the bullet hit him, he yelled out, It has to be my old sniper instructor from Fort Benning. Only he could do that type of shooting.

That’s not true; I know plenty of people who could make those shots and take out whoever they want.

    WOODS OF NO RETURN

From Worcester to Springfield, there’d been a rash of bank robberies, armored car heists, and numerous small businesses along the highways that were robbed.

The incidents all had the same earmarks, and the people doing the robberies disappeared very quickly on their motorcycles. No directions have been seen as to where the robbers leave for as of yet. Even the police on alert for the motorcycles haven’t been able to see them.

In the Springfield area, the robberies always occurred near a major highway and with an easy way of getting out of the area.

All the towns in between have also been hit more than once, and fortunately, no one has been killed or wounded. The police were complaining to the State and all the way up to the Federal government. The CONTROLLER was called from the government to help out with the problem.

A witness had stated that what she saw were masked men getting on motorcycles and leaving the area quickly. They were being followed by a red Chevy cube truck.

In the armored car heist, brand-new cars were being used for the getaway. They had dealers’ plates instead of regular plates. The cars were always recovered shortly after the robberies. The cars were always stolen. The robbers were very elusive and disappeared quickly.

The CONTROLLER had called to inform me of a big problem in the town of Grave, which is north of Emerald Lake. The Chief of Police, Ken Wilson, wanted our help in clearing the State Forest of a large gang that was comprised of druggies, motorcyclists, and some local riffraff, but it is believed that the majority of the people in the State Forest were from out of state.

It’s believed that some of the gang members were involved in the killing of a Federal Judge and his wife plus two Federal prosecutors.

Witnesses to the killings have been threatened and have received harassing phone calls. They were told, if they showed up to testify, they would be also killed.

The gang has the whole wooded area under its control and, so far, has shot at anyone who happened to drive or walk down any of the many roads going through the woods.

They have control of both sides of the major highway that splits the forest. Traffic has not been stopped on the highway either by the police or the gang in the forest. They’ve been in the woods for about three months and won’t leave. Police officers have been shot at, and a few have been put in a hospital with gunshot wounds, nothing serious. It appears that they haven’t a clue on how to properly fire the weapons, which is good for the police.

One State Trooper was shot at, but they missed. He returned fire and believes he hit at least three individuals before they were dragged back deeper into the woods. It was believed that there are at least fifty gang members in the forest and possibly more.

A schoolteacher and her young daughter were captured by a portion of the gang while having a bite to eat at a picnic table at one of the picnic areas. The schoolteacher was gang-raped then severely beaten. She was taken to one of the entrances with her daughter and left in their vehicle, which could be seen from the road. She had a note saying, Anyone else who enters the woods will be killed. She was told to tell the authorities that the woods belonged to them and that anyone who came in was as good as dead.

The woods, which are part of the Massachusetts forest, are a good place for picnics and family outings. Inside the forest are camping sites, picnic areas, a beach, and a boat ramp. Also there are bike and walking trails.

When we arrived at the state forest, the police
