The Night Sky - Magan Street
Chapter 1
Cierra! The bell rang. C’mon or you’re going to be late, again!
someone yelled.
I raised my head to see Lilly standing by the door to our history class. I fell asleep again! I really need to get more sleep at night, not day.
Oh, come on Lilly. She’ll never make it. No need for us to be late, too.
Lilly’s boyfriend, Oliver, called out.
And, of course, he was right. Lilly gave me a sad look and took off for our training class. We have to train in case a war breaks out. Nobody really has powers or special abilities except the Star and Moon.
I don’t know why they keep making us learn to fight. Is that not the reason we are all on this stupid island? Ugh. I fall asleep and still know something about history.
Cierra, this is twice this week. Are you not getting enough sleep at home?
Mr. Pillar asked interrupting my thoughts.
Um… well no, I’m not. I don’t know. I’m just not getting much sleep,
I said gathering my books.
Well, okay then. We went over chapter eighteen. Make sure you read over it, and let’s not sleep anymore in my class. I would hate to take this to the office.
He walked over to his desk.
At least I won’t have to read the chapter. When you can’t sleep at night there is nothing to do. I read it two nights ago. It just goes over the country’s arrival to the island, Scarto. How they were rejected from the new world. The Americans didn’t like our people because the Mother, our Queen, had special abilities. The people called her a witch and kicked her off the land along with her people.
They sailed south and found an island. The people have been here since then. But, the Americans had been right about the Mother. She was a witch, the only one at the time. Now, the only people who have special abilities, like the Mother did, are the Star and Moon, however they are. On the Council, there are nine seats, one seat for the Moon and military and another one for the Star. The Moon, he is said to be ahead of the army and lead us to the great battle and victory. The Star, she is said to be the Moon’s soul mate. She will have the power to keep peace for the Moon. Neither of them has come to take their seat on the Council. Only when our country needs them, will make their powers come alive. Sounds cheesy, I know, and the Council thinks that time is near.
So does my father. I, on the other hand, don’t. The world as we know coming to war is the last thing I need to worry about. I have trouble enough with my grades and sleeping in class to worry about anything else. But, I wouldn’t mind missing my next class, learning to fight. What school teaches that?
Mine. Here, they hope a war will bring back the county’s great powers. I don’t understand why any country wants to fight. Then again, it seems there is always some war going on between some countries. Here, in Scarto, they live to fight. Everyone has to learn some kind of fighting, rather it’s just defending yourself or how to kill. And since I’ve missed most of class, couch Kent will probably call my dad, again. It sucks to have your dad in the army and highly ranked because then, you are expected to better than everyone else. I’m probably the worst in my class. Now, my brother, Jamie, he’s great at this fighting stuff. I guess that’s why he joined the army.
I opened the door to the gym. Everyone was crowded around the TV. I made my way through the crowd. The news was on and a reporter came on and said, Thank you, Carey. This is Haley Mice reporting from the capitol, where I’m trying to talk to Billy Howard, who holds the third seat on the Council. Rumor has it, that the Moon has been found.
She stuck a microphone in his face.
Tonight, at seven o’clock, there will be a speech about rather the Moon has been found or not, but until then, we will not be talking to the press.
He said, as he was getting into his car.
Well, that was all Mr. Howard has to say, so back to you Carey.
The woman went off the screen and another woman came on.
Coach Kent turned the TV off. Okay. Everyone back in line,
he said rushing everyone away from the TV. Cierra, you’re late, my office now, please.
I turned around, going to his office.
Thank you.
Yeah, okay.
I smiled.
His office looks the same as it did the last time I was here. That was Monday, three days ago. There were papers on his desk, two chairs, and pictures of him receiving awards. I looked at the mirror across from the chair that I am sitting in. Of course, as I guessed, my tiny, dark brown curls are a mess.
I looked around for my brush in my oversized bag. Why did I have to get things that should shallow me?
I started to brush my hair and I have so many tangles in my and dark spots under my eyes. I will just have to redo my make-up around my eyes. I wear it to make my eyes stand out. Purple eyes aren’t very common, at all, so I want to show them off.
Are you putting that stuff on to hide the fact you fell asleep in class again?
Coach Kent said coming in his office.
Um, yeah I guess,
I said putting my stuff away.
He sat in his chair and turned his computer on. After looking at it for a few minutes, he turned to me.
Now, why are you falling asleep and missing my class?
he asked.
Well, I can’t sleep at night. I keep having weird dreams; they tend to keep me up.
I told the truth.
He didn’t seem very happy. He’ll probably say something like, ‘You’re letting a little bad dream keep you up?’ But he didn’t.
Well, I have been talking to your father some, and he wants me to get Dr. Frank to see you about the dreams.
He said picking up the phone.
A doctor, like a shrink? And he has been talking to my dad? For how long has this been going on?
. . . yes, that will be great. Thank you.
He put the phone back. He said he can see you tonight.
I just nodded, stood up, grabbed my bag, and walked out. The bell rang. People were coming out of the dressing rooms to go home. I headed for the parking lot, to my little green Nissan Altima. Lilly was there waiting for me, leaning against the car.
I think it’s about time to get a paint job and get rid of this horrid green color,
she smiled.
You always say that, but you know I won’t.
Yeah, well Oliver is taking me home. I’ll call you later.
She said.
Alright, I’ll talk to you later, then.
I cranked the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Now I have to go home and see the stupid shrink; great.
What good is he going to do? I’m just another girl going crazy around here. I have a weird feeling telling him or anyone about my dreams. Everything is just getting weird around here. First, I have the weirdest dreams. And what’s the deal about my dad calling the couch about my dreams? Or why would Dad even get a shrink to talk to me about them? Like I said, everything is just getting weird.
Chapter 2
Yeah, I’m watching it now.
I told Lilly over the phone.
Oh. My. Gosh! He is just the cutest guy EVER. Well, other than Oliver, of course.
She laughed.
The boy was kind of cute. He’s tall, kind of buff, nice sandy colored hair that fell over his forehead, and bright green eyes. And he’s the Moon, Alex Coven. He is from a small town called Lineing. It’s in the west part of the country.
We are watching the seven o’clock news. Just as the man said, there would be a speech. The kid is the same age as Lilly and me, sixteen years old. His birthday is next month, November twelfth. And he goes to school at Lineing High.
That’s all they said about him and they are in search of the Star. The Council believes she doesn’t know of her powers, yet. And that the Moon will be able to know who the Star is.
Oh my goodness. What if we know the Star, Cierra!
Lilly yelled in the phone.
I think after I hang up with her I’m going to have to get my hearing checked.
The doorbell rang; it’s probably the stupid shrink.
Well, I think the shrink is here. I’ll see you tomorrow at school.
I told Lilly before I hung up.
I got up, turned the TV off, and went to the door. A short man with black hair in a beige suite was standing at the door.
Uh, are you Cierra Love?
he asked.
Yes, that’s me.
Should I call for my dad? I didn’t know. I turned to the hallway. Jamie, my brother, walked up to the door.
Hey, are you the shrink?
he asked.
Um… yes, I am. Is General Love here?
Yes, I’m here. Why don’t you come with me, Kevin? We can talk in my office.
Dad said coming out of his office. The short man came in and went with Dad to his office. I closed the door.
So, why is a shrink here to see you again?
Jamie asked.
I don’t really know. Something about those dreams I had. You could really help and go spy on them for me?
I raised my eyebrows.
No, I’m not getting in the middle of you and your weird dreams,
he went to turn the TV on. Plus, Dad told me I shouldn’t.
He turned on his favorite TV show. I sat down beside him on the couch thinking I should talk to my brother about my dreams instead of a shrink.
Jamie? Can we talk?
I asked.
He looked at me. I could tell that he knew this was important. So he said, Yeah.
I smiled. How do I ever bring it up? When we said we would never talk about Mom’s death.
Remember what Mom said before she died that night? ‘That’s when the power comes out; it will show in her this time.’ What do you think she meant?
I didn’t like talking about it, but I have to know. Maybe she knew something that we shouldn’t forget. And it keeps coming in my dreams.
Yeah, I remember.
He looked sad, But we’re not talking about it.
He got up and started to walk away.
No, Jamie. Please, I think it has something to do with my dreams.
I almost screamed. I need help and he was the only other person there when Mom died.
What are you talking about?
I have to tell him my dream. But I don’t even know what I’m talking about. In my dream I’m somewhere in a room. There are documents everywhere. I always pick one up and it says the same thing Mom told us the day she died. And these people expect me to read it to them. It’s written in drawings. Like, I’m the only one who can read them.
I said.
He just looked puzzled. Like he didn’t know what to say, but I didn’t either.
Mom always said you had the best eyes. You can see everything.
He mumbled. Have you told anybody this?
No. Just you, what does it mean? You know something don’t you? Mom always told you things.
He shook his head, put one finger over his lips, and mouthed, ‘Let’s not talk here. Come on lets go to Mom’s odd office.’ I nodded.
No one has been in here since she died. Aunt Claire and I came in here about a week after,
he took a deep breath. After she died, we found a lot of stuff.
He went through a couple of cabinets and handed me three folders. I opened the one on top. It was about the Star. About all the powers she will have. Somewhere being to read the language the Mother made for her people, before she decided to stay with English.
Okay, so why are you showing these to me?
I asked looking at the next folder. It was about the Moon. It, also talked about what powers he would have. He can look into people’s eyes and see their weakness in them. I really don’t understand that.
I’m showing you these folders, because I think you can help.
He said.
Help, help who?
I was confused.
Everyone, Cierra; Mom was so smart. She found the Mother’s documents, and died protecting them.
He looked right in my eyes.
What do you mean? Jamie, I’m confused.
I have no idea what he is talking about. What does this all have to do with my dream anyways?
He took the first folder from me. Look. She hasn’t been found, yet. That’s because she doesn’t know who she is. Mom thinks-or thought she knew who she was.
He said.
If Mom knew who the Star is, why didn’t she tell anybody? But I knew the answer. It was to protect the girl.
Who is it?
I asked.
That’s the thing. I don’t know. I bet that the answer is somewhere in here.
He’s right. It has to be.
Okay, so you go out there and if Dad or the shrink come out-I don’t know—just keep them busy.
I told him.
Yeah, and try to hurry.
He went out the door.
Now, where should I start?
The cabinets? The shelves? There are just too many things in here.
I found a box labeled videos
. I got some scissors and opened it. There was a note that said, My special little girl.
The videos are of me. I wonder what they’re about.
Yeah, Dad, I think she is in her room,
I heard Jamie walking down the hall. I grabbed the videos and the folders and ran out of Mom’s office. I went straight to my room.
Thank goodness the rooms are close together.
I opened the door to my room, and I turned on the light. Only to be blinded be the bright green paint. I really wanted to change that. I walked over to my bed, and crammed the stuff under it. I could hear Dad walking on the hardwood floor, so I grabbed a magazine and flipped to a random page.
My door opened. Dad was standing there, still in uniform.
The shrink said he could ask you a few questions. He might be able to help with the bad dreams.
He said and walked over to sit on the edge of my bed.
You know, Dad, I don’t think it would help. I think it’s just some girl stuff.
The one thing I knew Dad will let go, girl stuff.
Well, if you’re sure that’s it.
He didn’t seem sure.
Yeah, trust me, Dad. I’m sure. With the…
Okay. Well I’ll go tell him.
He stopped me. He walked over to the door, stopped for a second, and closed the door behind him.
I waited until I didn’t hear his boots on the wood floor before I got the stuff back out. I got the videos and DVDs. I grabbed the one on top and put it in my DVD player.
It started out as me when I was maybe three. I was lying down in my bed. I mumbled a few things I couldn’t make out. Then the camera moved. My mom came on the screen.
She just said ‘When the power comes out it will show in her,’
she wrote it down and put the papers in a purple folder. In this folder I have all the information to prove my daughter is the Star.
She said into the camera, and then it went black.
The purple folder! I have it. It’s one of the folders that Jamie handed me. I went to my bed and got it out. I tried to open it but my hands were shaking so bad. Finally, I calmed down long enough to open the folder. There are pictures and reports about me. They said that I am the Star!
I have to tell Jamie. I ran to the door, jerked it opened, and ran to his room. He
