INTRO TO MY LIFE
M y name is Abigail brown, My Draini name is Tamas. I am sixteen years old. I age slowly, I can run extremely fast, and I can read minds and turn invisible. I am a Draini; I can either look human or a purple human with white glowing eyes. I feed on crystals, which. I’ve lived with my father Kyle since I was 5 years old when my mother faded away into nothing but dust.
A rule was made for all immortals; you could not marry a human. Sadly my mother was one of many who disobeyed. My father never knew about us, she wanted it like that. My best friend Eddie’s father was just like my mother, except he lived a lot longer and taught us more about our kind. He vanished when we turned twelve. We had another friend. Eva, she betrayed Eddie and me. I am a Source, Me and many other Draini’s are. No one knows what sources do, or how you become one. You’re just born as one, there’s no distinct way to tell you just know you’re a source. You can’t hide it either.
PART 1
Chapter 1
I t was a Rainy morning. I was sitting on the couch staring out the window observing the cold wet world. I hated the rain, Ever since my mother died. It was Raining when she past away. I closed my eyes, going back to the day i saw her remains float into the sky. Reopening my eyes I wrapped my arms around my gray sweats continuing to look out the window.
In a few hours our town will have a parade. My father had signed me up to play an instrument, But only if it wasn’t rained out. I had no idea what instrument he signed me up for. It didn’t matter because it looked like it was going to be rained out, Sighing with relief, i turned my head, and gripped the sand colored couch’s pillows. I had accidentally looked at her picture.
She was wearing shades to hide her eyes. Her long straight perfect blonde hair stood still. She had her lips pressed on my cheek. Her arms were around me. She was wearing her pink short cut off dress. And i was wearing a green sweater. My brown unbrushed hair was flowing freely. I had a huge smile on my face. That photo that remained on the shelf was only there because my father didn’t know Eva and i weren’t even friends anymore.
I hated that I was wearing that same green sweater.
A hand was placed in my vision. You know the parade starts soon right?
My dad asked all cheerful.
Looking at him, I could tell he had been up for hours. His gray shirt had white paint splattered on the shoulder. His worn jeans had a slight hole from all the years he had had owned the pair.
I’m aware.
I said. He nodded looking at the shelf of pictures. I hope the rain ends soon.
I mumbled resting my head on the couch staring at out the window once more.
You used to love the rain Abbey.
He said his voice getting lower. He had left the living room.
I used to. I said silently.
==== FLICKERING TO THE PAST====
Abigail, you’re going to get a cold!
Mom yelled running after me laughing.
I screamed as she caught up to me flinging me into the air. Her long white dress flowing wildly. The sky burst into a deep purple then a dark violet. We laughed as she caught me. We fell to the ground as the rain poured onto us. We were soaking wet. We took hold of each others hand. We watched as color shot across the sky, Mom’s hand giving off bright colors. I watched as she painted. Dad must never know.
She said smiling.
We walked back to our house soaked and still giggling. Dad walked out of the house smiling.
Looks like a cold will be expected.
He said.
Mom laughed pulling us inside giving dad a quick kiss, then headed inside.
====BACK TO THE PRESENT====
I stood up stretching my legs. My phone lay on the cushion with no notifications.
Eddie was at camp the entire summer and was supposed to get back today.
Dad I’m going to Eva’s!
I yelled. I don’t know why I didn’t say Eddie’s. He knows he and I are inseparable.
Be back before dark.
He yelled back.
I pulled on my sneakers and dark jacket. I opened the door pausing at the entrance. Looking back into the house, I felt a sensation that something was wrong. Something was out of place. I lit my hands and white translucent light shone off my right hand. I slowly looked around the living-room. What could it possibly be? The feeling subsided. Whatever was threatening me was gone. I walked back to the door throwing one look inside before shutting it.
Instead of turning down the dirt path towards Eva’s house I kept going straight toward Eddie’s house. Maybe he was home.
We had a stone walk way that went off in four directions. One was a path to Eddie’s house, one to a dirt trail, one to town and the other was mine. It was quiet. Which goes without saying people don’t see what goes on around here. Strange things have happened. My mother requested that we stay here because it was so quiet and it never got attention.
I walked up the creaky wooden steps up to the blue colored house., And rung the doorbell. The paint was chipped; almost time to repaint the house again.
A woman in her early forties answered smiling. Abbey
She said. He’s not home, He’s at camp.
She sighed. He should be back in a few hours hopefully.
That’s alright.
I said smiling. When he gets back we should paint the house again.
Mrs. Bonders smiled at the outside house. It’s about that time isn’t it? Maybe we could get your dad involved in it.
She smiled at me. Her smile was ageless. She could smile when she was ninety. She would look gorgeous. He did leave some message for you; I guess I’m not supposed to know what it is because it’s a book and a tree. Or is it paper?
She thought out loud.
Paper
I replied answering her thought. And nothing bad, don’t worry.
I gave my best reassuring smile I had. The ‘paper’ meant a note with further explanation. It was a childhood tree-house that we rarely visited now where the note would be held.
Her smile seemed to deepen at my sincerity. Good, because we all know, if something happened to Eddie, Mama Bear would come out of the cave.
Eddie’s whole life he always wondered why his father never told his mother about us. He never said not say anything nor dwell on it. He would simply say There will be a time and a place.
and that is all he ever said on it.
Did you walk out here?
Eddie’s mom asked worried.
I won’t melt.
i smiled.
Take care of yourself and your dad Abbey.
She warned.
I waved goodbye to Eddie’s mom. She waved back and leaned on the porch column and watched me make my way down the road I had come. Still raining, i could smell the grass. I hated the smell of grass. As soon as i placed my foot on the curb i tilted my head up toward the sky letting the rain wash onto my face., Just like i had done when i was younger.
I often wondered if my mom ever saw it coming, that she new that one day the council would find her. So she spent every waking moment with us. Maybe that’s why she stayed as close as she could to us, never letting go until she had to.
As I approached the tree that Eddie left a note on the rain cleared up and it was just clouds of gray. A big oak tree, Where Eddie, Eva, and i had spent many nights sharing stories.
I found a paper pinned to a tree by a pushpin. Tearing the paper from the tree, I read the note. An X
was all it had said. I shook my head slightly looking around. An ‘X’, meant target. Why was Eddie targeting me? I looked around feeling self conscious. That was what the bad feeling was. My phone vibrated. Looking at it, I saw it was my dad calling. I declined the call. Once more looking around,
The wind had picked up, blowing my hair violently across my face. I opened my phone sending a text to Eddie.
Where r u?
it said. Pressing send i sat down looking at the people going indoors., Closing up their windows.
====FLICKERING TO THE PAST====
You know that other life forms walk the planet?
Eddie said placing his yellow cup on the counter.
Eva combed her frizzy hair. Are you asking me if they exist? Or, if i knew they exist?
Eddie looked up. I was just wondering because you seemed perplexed when the alien hunting show came on.
Eva smiled bravely. You think I’m afraid of other life forms?
He smiled back. Are you?
I coughed. I swear if you two get all mushy in my house you will be banned.
i said lying on the floor with my book and water.
Eva and Eddie went back to looking at each other competitive. I sighed, Flipping the page.
====BACK TO THE PRESENT====
Chapter 2
W here were you Abigail?
My father questioned eyes welling with tears.
At Eva’s
I replied confidently.
Stop lying Abbey, I talked to Ms. Welsh. She didn’t know you and Eva were friends anymore!
He shook his head. And when you didn’t pick up your phone, Oh Abbey I thought something terrible happened to you.
Dad-
No!
He said fiercely. Every time you speak lies are told.
I looked at his face. His eyes glittered. If you don’t tell me everything
He took a shuddering breath. Including this thing with Eva, I’m sending you back to the institute.
I backed away bumping into a table. I looked down making sure I didn’t knock anything over. No.
I said looking back at him. I won’t go back, they treated Eddie and I like dirt.
My father nodded and sat down in a nearby chair. Begin when you’re ready.
He gestured with his hands.
====FLICKERING TO THE PAST====
A well-built dark skinned man in a business suit sat down in front of Abbey. He passed a small smile. Morning Miss Brown.
He said.
Morning
I replied bored.
You know why you’re here this time? Abigail.
I smiled. No, But even if I did you would tell me, right?
He leaned in more seriously. I’m not here to play games Abigail.
I leaned in as well. I see that Charlie.
He straightened exhaling. OK
He said. Let’s start here, why do they call you Tamas?
I smiled.
====BACK TO THE PRESENT====
Abbey?
My dad asked.
I blinked. Dad I can’t tell you.
You know, you said that exactly four years ago as well!
He screamed.
I shook my head tears sliding down my face. And I meant it. I still can’t!
I walked away from my dad, towards the door.
Abbey!
My dad yelled. I heard the scoot of his chair, and the pound of his boots thundering across the wooden floor.
I turned from the door and went down the hall, to my room. Abbey! Come back out here! I’m not finished with you yet!
I slammed the door ignoring him. I leaned my back to the door. Sliding down it, I put my face into my hands and silently cried. I remembered I had the home phone on my dresser. I picked myself up and walked over to the phone and dialed the only person’s number I could think that could help me.
Hello?
Eddie, I need you to do me a favor.
I could here him sighing on the other line.
You know i would love to, but my mom. She would be upset if i was making plans now.
Ill deal with it, don’t worry. Be there in ten.
i heard him laugh and hang up.
Tiptoeing down the hall to the door, I glanced at the living room. He was watching Old home videos of mom and me. I abandoned my rain jacket and put on my green fleece sweater. A wedding photo came up of us three. I was two. I had a huge smile on my face. Both of my parents looked drunk. My mom was beautiful, and my dad, He had flawless skin, nothing looked better then those two. I noticed the movie stopped playing. My eyes turned to my father, he was silently crying. I turned invisible and walked over to him. Slowly, so the wood wouldn’t creak under my feet. Goodbye Kyle.
I whispered. I turned away walking to the door. I slowly opened it. I glanced back at him. He was staring at the TV, tears rolling down his face. I looked outside, I was overcome by emotion, and a tear slid down my cheek. I shook myself back to my job. Get to Eddie’s. I closed the door behind me., Walking away into the dark.
Chapter 3
E ddie!
Called his mom, she faced back to me. Sorry things are stressful at home Abbey.
Eddie charged down the stairs a moment later. He saw my face and motioned upstairs. I followed.
He closed the door behind me. "What
