Little Weed
In a field with rolling hills, inside the gates of a prestigious nature center is a barren courtyard where in the spring a sea of tulips will grow.
Ms. Straight is the gardener of the Fresh and Plenty Nature Center. She has picked and pruned the gardens directing all the seedlings into specific groups. She planted the climbing roses on the gates, the violets around the veranda, and the gladiolas in a row that followed the sidewalks.
The Fresh and Plenty Nature Center is a beautiful arboretum, a place where Ms. Straight planted her carefully selected trees and flowers. All the townspeople loved to visit. It was the best nature center in all of Clearwater.
Ms. Straight’s favorite flowers were the tulips. Miles of tulip rows were planted. All of them were different colorful breeds. In early spring the tulips pushed out of the ground like a glorious bundle of beauty. School children visited the Fresh and Plenty Nature Center just to see the magnificent bulbs. Ms. Straight bustled about making way for the delicate tulips and their grand beginnings.
But this spring, Ms. Straight was in for a big surprise. Nestled in the dirt next to the fine tulips, Little Weed was starting to grow.
The seed of Little Weed was snuggled very quietly in the dirt and waiting for warmer weather to sprout. For now, the air was too cool and too brittle. Little Weed considered it more like freezing. She was happy in her shell and not ready to come out.
However, the tulips all seemed to be in a rush. They were ready to perk right up. Ms. Straight brushed her hand over the fresh layer of soil that she had placed on the tulip field. Their green tips were pushing out of the ground. She could see their sturdy stalks eagerly branching out.
Ms. Straight scheduled field trips for the school children to visit the arboretum. Soon they would see the mighty trees and precious flowers. But it was the tulips and the greatness of their colorful blooms that the children loved the most.
The tulips opened their sturdy petals in a gentle breeze. The magentas, the corals, and the strawberry swirls were giddy and giggling in their shiny new skin. The white tulips were chatting about the batch of seeds they came from, while each of the colorful groups was claiming to be the first ones planted.
Ever!
they said.
Most of the fine purples and blue greens were just content to stand and gleam.
The peppermint stripe stood alone. He was the only tulip of his kind in the field. The rest of his variety had not survived. Since he was the single one, most of the time he just tried to blend in.
It was an exciting day for all of the tulips, as all of them had been underground all winter waiting for spring. The air was perfect for them. The soil was more comfortable, but not too warm. And then it happened.
Little Weed awoke from her slumber. She was feeling crowded by the roots of all the tulips and decided to pop out of the ground.
It would be too graceful to say that she bloomed. It was more like a bulge.
