About this ebook

Author Mary Riem lived the American dream. Her childhood in Seattle, Washington, was idyllic, infused by a wholesome family and faith. As she grew into a womanand an agnosticher ambition and passion led her to achieve success in many areas of her life. Riem dreamed of adventurous travel, and she realized her goal to experience the world on her terms. She seemed to have it all. But instead of great contentment, Riem found herself deep in despair, battling an eating disorder and drug addiction.

In Journey to Peace, Riem shares her account of the dramatic ways that God revealed himself to her, and she tells why as an adult she became a Christian after many years of agnosticism. She narrates stories of her global travel, including a life-impacting experience working for Mother Teresa in India.

A memoir, Journey to Peace tells how Riem transformed from one who constantly sought new experiences to satisfy her longings to a person of contentment and peace.

    INTRODUCTION

My home overlooks the fairways of a golf course. As I view the beauty I am filled with awe that I am privileged to live in such a serene setting. This scene is a mirror of my inner being, I am at peace.

I find it remarkable that the serenity I have is constant despite changing situations. Circumstances ruled my emotions for much of my life. I had a restlessness that caused me to constantly seek new experiences to provide enjoyment and satisfaction. Contentment evaded me despite having close relationships, experiencing job success, traveling extensively and participating in exhilarating sports.

I know now that what I was missing was spiritual grounding. For many years I was an agnostic and cynical about religious beliefs. During a time of profound emotional and physical distress I had what I would term my first God sighting. Since that time I have had numerous ‘sightings’ that have led me to a strong faith. My life has been filled with both global travel and travel of my soul. Many times the two have been intertwined. I will be sharing with you the story of my life and highlight some of these journeys. In doing so I must divulge the ‘skeletons in my closet’ that frankly will surprise many who know me.

It is my desire that this book will not only engage and inspire you, but will prompt you to choose the peace of God.

    CHAPTER 1

    THRIVING IN MY

    FORMATIVE YEARS

Just outside the city limits of Seattle sits an acre of land where my parents built a home and developed a farm. I was the oldest of four girls and was fortunate to be in a loving and cheerful environment. The days were filled with constant activity. There were many chores which vied for school work and recreation time. Each one in the family had a role in managing all that needed to be done. The animals needed to be fed, the barns stocked and cleaned and the garden planted, weeded and harvested. Each of our four goats needed milking twice a day. It was not uncommon for one goat to produce two quarts of milk a day. Mom did most of the milking but I sometimes helped. We always had an abundance of milk and gave the surplus to friends.

My sisters and I had specific farm projects to help us learn how to manage a money-making endeavor. Colleen, who was a little more than a year younger than me, fed the chickens and sold eggs. Joan, the sister younger than Colleen, raised rabbits which were
