Experiencing Essence: The Emerging Hope of Our Times
Author

dr. j. lee jones

j. lee’s love of the journey is steeped in contemplative tradition from across the spectrum of spirituality from the Franciscan mysticism of her early childhood to the Eastern mysticism of her young adulthood to today’s Kabbalistic mysticism. This variegated life path has served to grow her unique perspective on the human artistry of being and, according to j. lee, is nourished most deeply in the mountains...from the Blue Ridge of Virginia to the Rockies of Colorado. However, nothing draws her more powerfully than the high desert “watermelon” Sandias of her beloved New Mexico.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

For all the scholars, authors, and teachers who nurtured this vision over the past two years from dissertation to book. To my faithful friend and brilliant editor Mary Sproles Martin whose thoughtfulness and care renders the book readable. To Kelly and Chandra who believed this work worthy of publication and without whom this information would have most certainly remained archived. Thanks for the insistence guys! To my family whose love and patience allowed me the space, time, support, and distance for this to emerge. And for the Spirit who has not only guided and informed me, but gifted me with the sacrament of the present moment and transformational attunement to hear.

And to you, the reader, whose journey I honor as a sacred trust.

    All good medicine,

    PROLOGUE…AND NOW IT BEGINS.

Our perception of spirituality and transformation in its present form didn’t just start with the Enlightenment. From our Greek forefathers, we learned that what was unseen and spiritual was good and what was seen was evil. The belief that higher spirituality exists in the transcendence of the material realms to the subtler realms of the higher planes of existence has been promoted in the West roughly from Augustine to Copernicus. However, from both Kabbalist text and Tantric writings, we learn it is the tapestry of our lives woven from and by Source energy, which brings Essence into the physical— the crown jewel of spirituality—the embodiment of Essence. As a matter of fact, the Kabbalists teach us the purpose of Creation itself is from God’s passion-driven desire to have a dwelling place in the physical realm, that everything set before us on our journey is designed to bring us into this destination. It is the crown of Creation.

Asked by a dear friend at dinner one evening the purpose for the book, it took me twenty-four hours to finally reply, Yesterday you asked what is the application of the book? Do I want the book to be clear in the presentation of the information? Absolutely, or it is useless. But there is something more important than that. If one word, one phrase, one concept sparks something in the reader and their response to that spark leads them to another book or song or interaction or class or even just a question that begins to draw them deeper into knowing who they really are, the work has served its purpose.

I believe this to be true because, as we are drawn by the Unknown, the Mystery, into the adventure, as we lean in, as we yield, there is hope for transformation, for a spark of the Divine to be released, a new vision to be unfolded, an unexpected turn to be met on our feet, for an unexplored path to be taken, for an idea to take shape. This passion-driven consciousness, when chosen, can move us into our True Selves because consciousness equals choice.

At the end of the day, we are going to grow, whether drawn by the Light of the future or jolted by the crisis or challenge of the moment. Either way, we grow. And all challenges that come, whether physical, mental, or emotional, come to bring out some hidden potential power of our soul yet unexpressed. It is the purpose of this book to present the energy available to us to meet those challenges, release those powers, and bring us into the experience of Essence.

    INTRODUCTION

Behold the only thing greater than yourself.

    ~Alex Haley, Roots

In Alex Haley’s Roots, Kunta Kinte’s father raised that baby to the sky and said, Behold the only thing greater than yourself. As we take the journey we call life, we lose the memory of our own greatness and of the One greater than ourselves, arriving as adults with often little, if any, cognitive memory of either. This is not surprising, as they are inextricably linked. On any journey—mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual—the question is always more important than the answer. We ask the question, What is this experience we call life? The answer to this question arises from the core of our soul where the ancients remind us, You are made in the image of God. This phrase has brought both great comfort and striving distress. This journey becomes, at some point, the search for purpose and meaning found within that image and it is as old as the human race. In our times, that search could be given the same title as Carl Jung’s text, Modern Man in Search of a Soul.

There also resides in those same heavenly seas addressed by Kunta Kinte’s father a cosmological point of reference for the seafaring world known as the North Star. It was the True North from which the sailors could plot a course home. It could be trusted. It was the magnetic force by which they found their way on an open and endless sea. The template of your life, coded in the Web of Creation, is the North Star of your Soul, the reference point for your spiritual journey, the resident resonance of your soul. In today’s language, your GPS.

Your Essence was first formed in the mind of God, in Divine Consciousness. Within this Essence is your True North. It is the soft voice heard in the Silence and it exists in the bridal chamber of the Beloved. It does not push or demand to be heard. It waits for your heart to open and then waits for true listening. And, though it is the magnetic center of your path, it is without the investment of when or whether you step onto the path of fulfillment. This Essence knows the Source and the Universe are cued up for manifestation.

The journey taken following that reference point is analogous to the oak found in the holographic coding of every acorn. All that is needed for the acorn to grow is fertile ground, sunlight, and water. The same is true for each of us. Within our being, the seed of the Divine rests, waiting for fertile ground, light, and water. The fertile ground for that seed is consciousness; the light and water for that seed are attention and intention. That seed is energetically coded to grow us into the experience of Essence we are by nature—our expression of Divinity.

The Light of God’s Essence, the Soul, and the Higher Self all are conceptual offerings that are accepted as a part of our collective consciousness and our everyday language today. But since we cannot see or touch our soul, how do we know it exists? Through experiencing it. We experience it sensually as the spiritual dimension of our lives—hope, the experience of awe and mystery, the expansiveness of forgiveness, a sense of meaning and purpose in the present moment, and a sense of belonging as we connect with the Absolute/Divine. These experiences are infused with a consciousness perceived from our hearts and not from our reason. We experience life from Essence as the totality of our spiritual path life manifests through the garments of our soul, our thoughts, words, and actions. Thus, these experiences always exist in potential. But how do we get there? How does the image of God actually emerge and flower into the meaning and purpose of its design? The intention of this offering is to move the mystery of words like transformation and manifestation, meaning and purpose, bodhi and sainthood, from the pages of scientific journals and mystical writings into everyday life, assuring us that our lives are not a random happening or an inaccessible mystery, but a journey that we can and do participate in just by how we are designed. In addition, we will come to see the energetic nature of the Universe as a lock and key design formatted for the certainty of that destination.

    Experiencing Essence

The history of science includes a time when it was believed that this globe was flat, that life forms we couldn’t see were winning in the battle of life and death, and that gravity wasn’t a living force in the universe. At the time of their prevalence, these beliefs were reality. However, we couldn’t understand how these realities moved through, influenced, or restricted our lives or how they could serve life. Just as what we know as electricity has always existed, until it was harnessed for our use, we had no access to the full impact of its gifting to us. So it is today; the gifting of quantum
