    INTRODUCTION

O ne might think that the whole earth was explored, every square on the atlas detailed. However that is simply not the case. We all know that there are remote and deserted islands, but when people are afraid to go somewhere, they call a certain five people, well, six if you are counting a dog.

Howard, why do you always where those same close, asked Heather just as I walked in the private study room. Miss Brooks if you referring to my brown pants and my white checkered shirt, I wear what is appropriate at the given time, I said giving a small laugh. As for my watch, this was a very special gift from a friend, I continued, as I held the five-thousand dollar watch up to my face. It was quite funny though. In all the years of my life, not once have I ever worn a suit, nor do I plan on it. I have tried plenty of them on before, but they just don’t feel right. Now before I get into the story, I must first tell you a about myself. I, Howard Phillips Strongwaters, born in Phoenix, Arizona, had never known my dad. It was not his fault. He was a navy seal. Mom was pregnant with me when he died overseas, so I never met him. She ended up giving me his first name. I hated the name Jr. so naturally I left that part out. I joined the navy at age twenty-two after studying archeology for four years at The University of Arizona. After seven years in the Navy I left honorably. I traveled the entire world. However my story is not about the navy days. At age thirty I eventually became an explorer. It is a great job, I love discovering parts of the world that has not been discovered yet, and I love my team. We get along great for instance Heather Brooks whom I have known for five years is always by my side. Where I go is where she goes. Heather was with me from the beginning when there were only three of us. She is very loyal and dependable. I can honestly say I trust her with my life. She takes her job very seriously, but realizes that life is too short to be all work and no play. Heather is what one would call a jack of all trades. She’s an expert at electronics. She can literally climb almost any mountain, and she can drive any car, stick shift or automatic. She could even fly a plane if needed. However, what I admired about her the best is that she gave all her credit to The Lord. She simply did not care what anyone negatively thought of her. Looking at her would make you think she was a supermodel, but once you saw her hands, one could tell she was an outdoors woman. Heather had a beautiful face without any blemishes. Her long dark brown hair was a little over a foot long. She was 5’9, and yet the both sides of her hands were full of scars. Still, she would give you the last bit of her food if she was starving and you were only in the mood for what she was eating. Heather was the kindest person I had ever met. As For my good friend Paul O’Dare, well, his last name speaks for itself. He was the oldest one out of the group. Like the rest of us, he is a faithful man. Unfortunately it is hard to trust his Judgment on the count of he likes to act without thinking, which is precisely why we have him with us. Paul is a small man. Nevertheless, he has the strength of two trucks, and when he was not working, he could have a sense of humor as if he were a comedian. Paul spent most of his life traveling. He would often visit other states or countries. He was a lonely and fearless person with a beard and no hair. He was always willing to give you the shirt off of his back. He grew up in the northern part of England. None of us really know where. In fact, prior to him join the team, no one really knows anything about him other than the stories we knew that he was making up. Once he told us that he was left in a basket to float across the Atlantic Ocean with only baby food and a bottle of milk. In another story, he told us that he stayed in England till he knew how to swim. Then he swam across the English Channel in the winter to Spain because when he saw France, he did not like the architecture. It grew to be quite entertaining. After a while, I think even Paul knew that his stories began to get out of control. Nevertheless, for some reason he did not want us knowing about his past, so he kept us smiling with his tales. We did not mind. Paul was a good guy. He worked hard, and that was all that mattered. Then there is none other than my friend Persistence Natalia Izkey. She is of Russian and Polish decent. Her mother, Ana Petrihan had escaped Russia by herself during the height of the cold war. She had eventually settled down in Poland where she met Albert Izkey and gave birth to persistence in 1981. When Persistence was old enough, she left for Canada and eventually spent a few years in India doing Missionary work before moving back to America. She is a quiet woman and will not trust easily. I met her in Duluth, Minnesota. She was working at the Port, and the rest is history. Other than the long scar along the side of her face she is actually quite pretty. She is about 5’9 with plenty of muscle. She trusts everyone on the team but will only answer to me. However, I notice that she hangs out with Heather a lot. They seem to enjoy each other’s company whether Persistence wants to admit it or not. She never gives herself enough credit, when in actuality her biggest strength is her mind. She can invent anything out of almost anything, and put it to good use. She really is nice once one gets to know her. I just would not want to get on her bad side. There is also the fifth person on our team. His name is Shaltu Peeku. Heather and I picked him up in India. Actually to be quite honest he picked us up first. The way how we met Shaltu Peeku was that Heather and I were in India on some business when we fallen deathly ill in the country side. We eventually passed out right before Shaltu had found us he dragged us to his nearby village where we stayed for a month regaining our health. Every Monday Shaltu would walk seven miles into town to buy us food and other things. When we were feeling better, Shaltu asked what we were doing in the Indian jungle. After a long conversation we convinced him to leave his village and to come join our team. When it comes to tough men Shaltu Peeku is as small and scrawny as they come, but he can sure pull his own weight. He is a very kind man, who always smiles. I guess one could say he could appreciate a good joke. Shaltu has a lot of heart and a lot of patience. He takes no short cuts and does everything to the best of his ability. I for one would want to cross him when he has knife, or any blade for that matter. No matter how friendly he is, when it is time for work, Shaltu could not be any more serious. Last but certainly never considered less important than anyone else, there is the fifth member of the team, Duke. He is way more than just the team mascot. Duke is a German Shepherd. He would not be a part of the team, had it not been for Heather. She was vacationing in the outback of Australia when she saw a stray. It just so happened that the stray was a pure bread. When Heather came back from vacation, everyone was expecting a souvenir. We did not expect a dog. Heather simply said that she fell in love with him, so she picked him up, fixed him up, named him Duke, and took him home. We quickly became used to Duke, and he quickly became loyal to the team. There was something special about that dog. Perhaps that is why Heather picked him up. He usually goes everywhere with us. We were all loners at one point before we found each other. Maybe that is what made us so great. We are all so unique.

    Chapter 1

    BETWEEN US FIVE

I was the last person in the room. After every mission, whether big or small, we would all meet up in a small room filled with computers to make sure everyone was all right. Even Duke was allowed in the room. I guess you would say he had special permis sion.

It was just the five of us. We were all loners, and none of us cared. We grew up on our own, so we did not mind when we were by ourselves for a long period of time. However, when the five of us—six, including Duke—were together, it was as if no one could outsmart us. No one was stronger, and no one had more faith than us. What we knew stayed between us.

As I entered the room, everyone looked back at me. I suppose I should have been the first person there, seeing as how everyone kind of saw me as their captain. We were all equal partners, but every football team needs a quarterback.

It’s about time you showed up. Tell me something, Howard. How is it that the one who called this meeting is not only the last one through the door but is also forty-five minutes late? said Heather, leaning against the wall next to door.

I did not mind, because no matter how much the team yells or barks at each other, we all respect each other, as we work hard and do our part.

Persistence—or Natalia, as we all call her sometimes—was sitting backward in a chair and looking at the floor, being her usual quiet self. I figured I would avoid her. She would never show that she was mad, but when someone would do anything wrong in her presence, you knew by the look she gave.

Shaltu was leaning against the computer and picking his teeth with his small homemade knife. He had created it back in India for protection. It was about seven inches long and made of stone, wood, and vines. He did not really use it anymore. That one was more for show.

She’s right, Howard. We all have things to do, said a deep voice. Paul was sitting on the floor and scratching Duke’s neck.

As I settled in, I looked at Paul with a smirk. Are you done? I asked sarcastically. I never cared how a woman spoke to me. It was like water rolling off a duck’s back, but I would not let another man talk to me any kind of way. Nevertheless, I was not a fighter. Fighting was bad business, and as much as we loved exploring, we were also businesspeople.

Now I’m here, am I not? I said as I turned to face everyone. No one had
