About this ebook

The war with the tainted god, Groth, is led by the master swordsman, Moreck Bladeblade, and the sorcerer Duntari. The first of the three harbingers has been destroyed, and the next one is not expected to manifest for another six months.

Moreck sets out on a simple task of traveling to the Elven Forest and checking to see if the wielder of the dague relic has been chosen. The young warrior Brannon and Azbella, a priestess of the goddess Aideth, accompany him. After arriving, he faces controversy and conflict. Imyria, the elf that befriended him on his last and only visit to the elven lands, is being hunted for treason for proclaiming that a false wielder has been chosen. He learns that the sacred tree of wisdom and source of elven magic is dying. Moreck also discovers that the dark power of the tainted god, Groth has, extended into the elven nation. His simple task turns into a struggle for survival.

Due to a letter his deceased mother had left him, Duntari chooses to go on a solitary quest to find and visit the mysterious Oracle. If he can pass through the trials set before him, he hopes to receive answers that can assist in being successful in the campaign and war with the tainted god. Duntari learns of another quest his mother had started and must find a way to summon her from the spirit world in order to complete it. On his heels is the evil group of sorcerers, the Pentad, that have found a way to eliminate his use of magic.

The unfortunate encounter with the leader of her faith leaves the high priestess Seleena no choice but to join her in the journey to Thurak, where a sacred ritual is to be performed. Her intended trek to meet up with her future mate, Moreck, has to wait. She had never left her secluded village before. She is not familiar with the people or life outside of it, though a few random strangers had come across its hidden location throughout her time span. In Thurak, she falls prey to betrayal and captivity. Her captor is determined to learn the secrets that Seleena has safeguarded and kept concealed from the outside world.

Volume Two: Beckoning of Darkness continues the riveting saga of the land of Therran, which captivates the mind and richly brings to life the stirring characters of that world.

    Dedication

A truly great gift in one's life is to have a friend that is always there and never waivers. A person can have moments of doubt, a lacking in confidence, frustration, impatience, error in judgment, or periodical ranting when attempting to complete a long project such as the writing of a novel. It is a part of human nature. Having a friend that understands and walks with you throughout it all without complaint is a friend indeed.... a friend who gives a gentle push in the right direction, offering encouragement and giving support. This novel is dedicated to Vicki Richards.... a gift in my life.

    PRELUDE

    SELEENA

Year 991 of the Fifth Cycle:

For the past three hours, Seleena desperately tried to figure some way out of her predicament. Absolutely nothing came to mind. The Supreme High Priestess Azuria had called a meeting with the Inner Sanctum members belonging to the Temple of the goddess Nadia. All its members were High Priestesses.... although not all the High Priestesses belonged to the Inner Sanctum. It was limited to twelve, not counting the Supreme High Priestess.

The timing could not have been worse. She had been on her way to see her future mate, Moreck. She left her secluded home to be at his side during the battles with the manifesting harbingers. Running into the Supreme High Priestess of her order, on a rural road in the northwestern kingdom of Olun, was almost unthinkable. Now she had no choice but to go with Azuria. It was her duty as a High Priestess and a member of the Inner Sanctum.

Seleena had chosen to wear riding clothes, versus the robe of her order. How the High Priestess Azuria guessed, that she was of the order, was beyond her. It could not be a coincidence, but the hand of the gods at work.

She and Duntari had their differences, even to the point of spewing threats in each other's faces. But it did console her that he accompanied Moreck. She knew of no other magic user that could be more capable in the protecting of her future mate, young though he was.

Moreck did not view Duntari in the manner of which she did. The master swordsman saw him as his deceased friend's son, Landor.... first and foremost. She was the opposite, seeing him as the sorcerer called Duntari.... first and foremost.

Seleena's horse trotted along a short distance behind Azuria, not wishing to give the opportunity to engage in conversing. Azuria had stated that she was heading to Haldar, then to Thurak where the meeting would take place. Both cities were in the northeastern kingdom of Clanden. That led to the question of why Azuria would be on the same road which she had been traveling on.

The Supreme High Priestess must have come from Bluvok, the first city encountered when traveling south from here. She should have been on the road leading east from that city, not north. It was the most direct route. There were no other roads east until one reached the Brodarian Mountain Range, and that was at the farthest point north which one could possibly go. It simply made little sense.

The night before she had left the small secluded village of Brodarien, Seleena felt some trepidation because she had never been anywhere else. She had made lady slipper tea to calm her nerves. Before she had finished her first cup, a knock had sounded at the door. When she had opened it, no one was there. She spied a letter lying just outside the doorway. That did not surprise her, suspecting it was Duntari who left it. She did wonder why he had not come in, prior to his departure. Seleena sat down and opened the letter after retrieving it. She knew the letter was from Moreck, due to the black sword signet on the outside.

Moreck had written of a battle with the harbinger mutants and the followers of the tainted god, Groth. It had taken place at Sarmin Pass, a short distance west of the city of Sarmin. The letter was fairly long, as it described what he had learned and was up against. The battle was a victory, but the main army with the harbinger was not there.

Whoever had been in charge had decided to split their forces. Moreck was sure the other part of the horde, accompanied by the Shadowed Bat harbinger, went to Charmeth. Charmeth was a riverport town south of Sarmin, and situated on the Sharma River. According to the letter, Moreck and Duntari were heading to Charmeth to confirm the theory. They were expecting to see the city captured, and harboring only the horde. There would be no survivors from its population.... with the exception of those who converted to serve the tainted god Groth. Moreck was upset that he had been tricked. The harbinger, which he had seen among the horde heading to Sarmin, had turned out to be a casted illusion.

Azuria halted her horse and turned her head to face Seleena, interrupting her reverie.

We are going to enter the woods up ahead. There is a good spot to camp within it. I realize we have some daylight left for traveling, but we would not find a better place before dark.

I'm guessing you know the area Seleena remarked.

I have been through here on prior occasions Azuria affirmed.

A few minutes later, Azuria veered to the left and entered the forest. It was not long before the trees started thinning out. It led to a small glade with only saplings growing within it. It was obvious that others had camped here in the past. A log was situated near a ring of stones which was used for the containing of a campfire. There was even two forked pieces of wood sticking out of the ground, on either side of it. Off to the side of the minor glade, stood a very large pine. The bottom branches extending from its trunk were at least ten feet from the ground, if not twelve. It provided an ideal place to keep dry in wet weather conditions. A pair of horses with gear could fit easily under it, with more than enough room for a few individuals to bed down as well.

Seleena and Azuria had separate supplies. Each unpacked what they were going to eat for dinner. Seleena unloaded a rolled up sleeping mat for the coming night. At the same time, she removed the wand from her waist and packed it away. Azuria had not seen it yet due to the cloak she was wearing, and she intended for it to stay hidden from her. A High Priestess carrying a wand would raise too many questions, and Seleena did not want that to occur. Azuria seemed too inquisitive as it was.... besides being suspicious because she was a stranger who knew the lore of a High Priestess belonging to the Inner Sanctum.

Both finished their meal, and nothing had yet been said between them. Seleena found the whole situation awkward. She had no desire to be here or traveling with this woman... regardless of her being the leader of their order.

I assume I would be correct if I thought you are upset because I interrupted your plans to meet with the man you journeyed towards. You have not been in the least talkative Azuria observed, breaking the silence.

Seleena and Azuria were both sitting on the log. They did not set near each other, but apart from one another. Seleena had made sure of that, waiting until Azuria sat and then taking a seat on the log that was not close to her. Seleena did not feel comfortable around the woman. She was not certain if it was the woman herself, since she was not accustomed to associating with outsiders in the first place.

It is true that I am not pleased. I was not making the trip for no reason. It was not a frivolous undertaking.

Men have a way of disrupting a woman's true path in life. Perhaps I have done you a favor, of which will take you time to realize.

    I doubt that.

Azuria paused for a moment of thought. She then resumed speaking.

It would be a dull and boring journey without conversation, and the road ahead is a long one. Mayhap we could try to have an amiable relationship while we are traveling together.

    Seleena chose to not respond.

I will start. Ask me a question, and I will answer it to the best of my knowledge.

Seleena was curious as to why Azuria traveled on the road north, when the road east out of Bluvok was the proper route to take to Haldar. Taking the east road in the far north would add seven to ten days travel time before she could arrive at her destination... at the very least.

Why did you take the route north, if you were intending to go to Haldar which lies on the east coast? I do not see the sense in it.

A good question. I was not originally going to take this north road. I made an impromptu decision to make another stop before I went to Haldar and Thurak. The cause of that sudden choice was due to a message that I had received, asking if I would share a spell with someone not of our sect. I refused of course. But it made me want to know more about the person who requested it. It seems the seaport of Redrock is the only town that has known this person.... until recently that is.

"What was the spell and who inquired of it, if you do not mind me asking?

It was a sorcerer who goes by the name of Duntari. He said the spell was important in the campaign to fight the Shadowed Bat and its horde of mutants. I did not believe a word of it, naturally. What could a spell of changing an aroma have to do with the fight? He was likely testing me and my dedication to the goddess Nadia. It is the way of men.

Seleena thanked her goddess that Azuria was not directly facing her when Duntari's name was mentioned.

Seleena recalled the communication from Moreck, which the magical rings they wore provided. She had gagged and was nauseated by the smell that accompanied the visual images she received about the battle he had engaged in with the scouting party of the mutant horde. Soldiers would be rendered helpless and unable to defend themselves due to that foul odor. It made her well aware of the reason for the request.

What if the message was true?

Duntari is a destructive and deceptive sorcerer. Why would I believe any message coming from him? There are tales from Redrock that relate to his escapades in that town. From what I have heard, he had burnt a ship and all the piers in the seaport. Later, he beat a man until he was near dead. What else he may have done, I do not know. I go to see what I can learn of the sorcerer. Maybe someone in the town personally knows him. As an afterthought, Azuria asked, Have you ever visited Redrock?

No. I have never been there. Seleena noticed Azuria engaged in her ability to perceive the truth of a statement. Now that she thought about it, the woman did every time a conversation with her took place.

Other than Redrock, the only town in the north is Sturnham. Have you been there?

No. I have not been to Sturnham either.

That would suggest that you have come from a homestead or farm or such, but you had stated that you hail from the village of Brodarien. It is not a village I have heard of, nor is it on any map that I am aware of.

Bluvok is the only town, which is not a seaport and resides in the western half of the Olun Kingdom, which is on a map Seleena rebutted. But there are small fishing villages that rest along the Sigard River. Hamlets are fairly common around the Troluk Mountains. Many small communities in eastern Olun exist along the base of the Appendum Mountain Range also. Those places are not on maps.

Are you saying that you hail from one of those places?

Seleena did not answer. She rose from the log and picked up her sleeping mat. She carried it over to her horse and laid it across the saddle. Taking the reins, she led the horse to a spot under the large pine. There were no clouds and it would not be raining, but she thought it best to bed away from Azuria. The woman may be brazen enough to look in her saddle bags when she slept. With her and the horse being close together, she would know if Azuria attempted the act.

Seleena did not care for questions that were continually directed towards her private life and past history. To her it was an interrogation, not a friendly conversing. In the town she grew up in, people simply did not behave that way. It was considered, at the minimum, to be disrespectful. Considerable difference lay between volunteering and sharing information with another, versus having the other push or pressure you into it. Seleena had not ever been anywhere but in her hometown, and was not sure if people elsewhere were different than they. What she did know, was that it grated on her and made her leery of her current traveling companion. She was not really judging the woman. Until she learned what normal behavior was in the outside world, reserving judgment was the appropriate and fair path to take.

Azuria and Seleena halted their horses. They reached the end of the road going north. Directly in front of them was forest, with the Brodarian Mountain Range in its background.

Azuria gazed at the sign. It had not been there on her last venture to the area. Towards the top of the signpost was a wooden arrow pointing west, with an inscription stating Redrock was 33 miles away. Under that wooden arrow was another inscribed arrow pointing east, indicating that Sturnham was 67 miles in that direction.

Do you know when this signpost was placed here, Seleena? inquired Azuria.

    No, I do not.

It has been some time since I have been up this way. I wonder what other changes have occurred since then.

Seleena made no response. Unless a question was asked, she rarely spoke.

Azuria had been making an attempt to engage in light conversation for the past two days. Nothing came of it. She knew she had interrupted Seleena's plans on going south to meet with a man, and the priestess was upset by it. She had noticed that Seleena wore a pendant made of golden tiger's eye. If that pendant was given to her by that man, then it meant Seleena had accepted him to be her mate. It reminded Azuria of a past and personally hurtful incident that transpired many years ago. She was training an aspiring and talented young High Priestess to be the next Supreme High Priestess. A man had given her an item with a tiger's eye in it. She had accepted it and wore it. It led to her leaving the order. After all these years, the pain of it had not lessened. If anything, it had intensified.

Seleena, what is the traditional lore of Nadia, in regards to the number of High Priestesses that are in the Inner Sanctum?

Twelve. Normally that would entail two from each of the existing kingdoms. Including the Supreme High Priestess, it would number thirteen. You know this. Why do you ask?

How many members are in the Inner Sanctum now, not including myself?

It took but a few seconds to realize what Azuria was referring to. Seleena had not given any thought to it, until being asked that question.

    Thirteen Seleena reluctantly responded.

I imagine that you can see the dilemma your presence causes me?

I do, though I had not thought of it previously.

And what advice would you give, in finding a resolution to the situation?

I have none. There has been no opportunity to think. You have just now brought it to my attention.

Think upon it then. I would be interested in what you would have to say in the matter.

Azuria prompted her horse to move again, in the direction of Redrock.

It is but a few miles to Redrock from here, and it is close to evening. We'll go off road and camp for the night. In the morning, we'll head into town Azuria informed Seleena.

Azuria noticed how attentive Seleena had become. Recently, a breeze carried the scent of the ocean. Could the woman have lived her entire life inland, never experiencing coastal land?

Azuria turned left and entered the woods, her riding companion following. It was not far into the forest when they reached a campsite. Six men were already there, using it.

Greetings, gentleman. I am High Priestess Azuria. This is High Priestess Seleena. We will be making camp here for the night.

Seleena easily recognized them as highwaymen.... and Azuria spoke to these unscrupulous bandits as if she expected them to leave. Did she think her position of authority extended beyond those of her order? What was the matter with her?

Four of the six men rose and started packing their things. Their leader, a young man in his early twenties, spoke to them.

What are you doing? We are not leaving.

We are. You can stay if you wish to, Grant. Evidently, you have not yet traveled this country much. We will have nothing to do with that woman. The middle aged bandit spoke to his leader in the manner of an elder brother speaking to an inexperienced younger brother.

Grant looked back towards the High Priestess named Azuria. She sat on her mount waiting patiently. The other High Priestess appeared nervous. He glanced back to his cohort who had spoken.

You run into her before? the leader asked.

No. I have heard enough though.

I have replied one of the others who was finishing his packing. Best to pack, or you be sorry.

Grant's amazement showed, though he tried to conceal it. He could not comprehend why the six of them should be so concerned with the woman, High Priestess or not. She had the emblem of the Temple of Nadia on her robe. They did not engage in hostile magic. Even if they did, there were six of them. How could she possibly overcome all of them? Reluctantly, Grant addressed the one other who was still sitting next to him.

Let's go. There's plenty of daylight left to get to another camp site.

After the highwaymen had left, Seleena questioned Azuria.

Why would your name cause that type of a reaction with them?

Azuria chose not to respond. Seleena did not drop the subject.

One of those men said he had met you before.

I travel a lot, and have been doing so for a long time. How could I possibly escape not meeting up with highwaymen?

That does not answer the question of why they were intimidated by the mention of your name Seleena retorted.

Perhaps some men are easily intimidated by women. I will discuss it no further.

The two priestesses rode into Redrock mid morning the next day. Azuria branched off from the main street of Redrock. Her route of travel took her through the poor residential section of the town. She halted her horse and spoke to Seleena.

No reason for you to dismount. I'll be but a moment.

Azuria strolled over to four children who were playing. The oldest appeared to be a girl of eleven years.

Good morning. My name is Azuria. I am curious about a matter. Perhaps one of you may help me.

The eldest of the group answered.

What yer be wantin' ta know?

The girl seemed nervous and suspicious. Azuria was accustomed to that.

I have not been here for five or six years. I recall seeing children living on their own, mainly in abandoned places or behind old buildings. I have given a home to some of those children in the past. But I have not seen any riding through town this morning.

Yer be askin' about dem orphans, I take it?

Yes. You could put it that way.

Ain't none here. All up north end of town.

I do not understand. How could they afford to live there?

    Orphanage got built there.

    Ahhh... I see. Thank you.

Azuria returned to her horse and remounted.

It looks like there have been some changes made in this town, Seleena. They have an orphanage now. I had not expected that. Not in this seaport.

The High Priestess exited the side section of town and entered unto the main street. She continued to the richer north part of town. Azuria noticed a temple being built. There had been no temples previously in the seaport. Azuria assumed it to be the first. It was for Hurun, the god of storms. It grated on her, though the irritation did not show outwardly. A Temple of Nadia should always be the priority.

Excuse me. Could you direct me to the orphanage? Azuria asked a passerby.

Four streets up, turn right. It be at the end.

    Thank you for the information.

Azuria and Seleena dismounted in front of the orphanage. It had a hitching rail. Elaborate for Redrock. The first part of the building looked to be not only an office, but a residential dwelling as well. It was two stories in height. Off to the right side and attached to it, a long structure that could house many children. Both in the front and on the side of that portion of the building, there was a yard for children to play in. A luxurious set up considering the size of the seaport.

Seleena followed Azuria to the entrance, hearing the laughter and excitement of children playing out in the yard. Seleena turned her head from the yard towards the door when she heard it open after Azuria had knocked. A striking young woman appeared from inside the doorway.

Dori! exclaimed Azuria. What are you doing here?

Greetings to you also, Azuria. I run the orphanage.

Excuse my manners Dori. I was taken by surprise. Who would... uumm... who gave you the position of running the orphanage? Who owns it?

I both own and built the orphanage, Azuria.

Seldom did Azuria find herself shocked, in any situation. It was befuddling. Regaining her composure, she asked May we come in and visit?

I was about to have mid day tea. Feel free to join me came the reply.

Dori left the door open and turned about, walking into the interior of the room. It appeared to be a visiting room for guests. Dori continued through it into another room. It was a kitchen with a dining table.

Have a seat. Are you going to introduce me to your friend, Azuria?

My manners seem to be a bit out of sorts today. Dori, this is High Priestess Seleena.

    They exchanged greetings.

I assume you will be having mint, Azuria. Seleena, what would you prefer?

    Do you have lady slipper?

Yes. I do. It is one of my favorite teas.

Once the tea was made, the three sat together around the table. Seleena could easily tell that an uneasiness existed between Dori and Azuria. Nobody was speaking.

Evidently you both know one another. How did you meet? Seleena inquired, breaking the silence.

Azuria and I met years ago Dori answered. I was a street orphan at the time. She invited me to go to Thurak and become an acolyte of her order. As you can see, I chose to stay here.

The power of Nadia rested strong within you, Dori. It does even more so now. It should not be wasted returned the Supreme High Priestess.

One needs not to be of the order, to do Nadia's work in this world.

A reply of that sort was not anticipated. The woman did not speak or act like the Dori she used to know.

Your speech and type of attire is vastly different than last we met, Dori.

I have had a good teacher, and learn quickly.

Seleena listened to the interaction intently. She knew of Dori. Moreck had mentioned her in the past. Dori was the woman that Duntari had protected so fiercely. Why or what relationship they had, Moreck did not know.

I am curious. How is it that you could afford to build this orphanage? Last I had heard, you were a serving woman in one of the sailor taverns.

    I have a benefactor.

And what favors did you do, for this to occur? Azuria asked with obvious insinuations and disapproval.

Dori could not hide her anger from the line of questioning and attitude of her guest.

None. I met the person once, for a brief few moments only. Your mind slips into the gutter quite fast, for a High Priestess of Nadia... Azuria Dori rebuked accusingly with narrowed eyebrows.

And who would do such a thing, without favors?

    His name is Duntari.

Seleena watched Azuria face when Dori mentioned Duntari. She had wondered if his name was going to enter the conversation. Azuria was visibly shaken by Dori's response. The answer had certainly taken the Supreme High Priestess completely off guard.

Seleena heard the front door open. A big man with a horribly disfigured face came to the entrance of the kitchen.

Someone be wishin' ta see yer for a minute, Dori. His ship be sailing soon.

Thank you, Thorn. Please have him come in. Dori spoke to her guests at the table. Please excuse me for a moment.

Seleena's eyes followed Dori, as she met someone in the middle of the other room. They were not that far away, and the sound of their voices carried into the kitchen.

Be appreciatin' yer seein' me, Dori.

How may I help you, Captain?

Storm on the horizon. I be goin' right into it when I set sail. I be askin' fer yer good wishes.

Dori placed one hand on each of his shoulders.

Good fortune and safe sailing be in your favor, Captain.

    Thank yer, Mistress Dori.

    Thorn and the Captain departed.

It is time we leave, Seleena. I have had enough of this foolishness Azuria spitted out with distaste as she stood up.

Leaving so soon? Dori asked as Azuria was passing her.

The High Priestess made no attempt to answer.

Pleased to have met you, Seleena Dori remarked as Seleena was close to the front door.

It was totally my pleasure, Dori Seleena returned with a warm smile, prior to exiting.

Once outside, Azuria had regained most of her composer. Seleena knew she was fuming inside.

We are going to see Shren. He is the head of Redrock Azuria informed her riding companion.

They rode to a building that appeared to be coming out of the base of the mountain. Azuria climbed up the steps and strode up to the front door. A man was standing on either side of it.

Please tell Shren that Supreme High Priestess Azuria is here to see him.

One of the men went inside. He came out a few minutes later.

Come with me. Shren is in his office at the moment. I will take you there.

Azuria knew where the office was. The building had not changed any. She followed the man, without making comment.

Shren said to go in when you got here.

Azuria opened the door and entered. She and Seleena took a seat as they exchanged greetings, and Seleena was introduced to Shren.

An unexpected visit, Azuria. What can I help you with? Shren inquired.

Do you know a woman named Dori?

Of course. I run this town. It is my business to know people.

I hear she has a benefactor. His name is Duntari. I would like you to tell me what you know of him.

Shren's body became rigid for a split second. His face became a slight paler also, and that lasted longer. He did not answer right away. When he did, it was in the form of a question.

Why do you want to know? What interests have you, in him?

It appears he has an affect or influence on people.

I will not dispute that. That does not answer my question, though.

I just came from the orphanage. A captain came to ask her favor, in regards to his ship setting sail. Do you not find that odd?

    Sailors are a superstitious lot.

I realize that. But why Dori? I cannot fathom that.

Ask the sailors. They would know best.

I would like to hear it from you.

As I stated, ask the sailors he repeated.

It has something to do with that sorcerer, Duntari... doesn't it?

Shren did not reply. Nor did it appear as he would.

We have been open and free with our conversations in the past. Why do I get the feeling that has changed? Will you share your knowledge of Duntari with me, or not?

The practice of shanghai with the youths of this town is almost non-existence, thanks to Duntari. Other than that, I have nothing to share about him.

I suppose our meeting is over with then.

I suppose it is responded Shren.

Once outside and re-mounted, Azuria found it difficult to control herself.

That cursed sorcerer has the whole town bamboozled she declared, exasperated with the matter. No reason to stay here any longer. She felt like galloping out of town, but that would not be dignified.

Two nights later, camped on their way to the eastern seaport of Haldar, Seleena received another communication from Moreck. The rings they wore were slowly becoming effective. From the images and feelings she received, the first harbinger had been destroyed. The news elated her. Her mate was alive and lived through that confrontation. She did not cease thanking her goddess until she fell asleep.

The two women riders were halfway between the town of Sturnham and Drumell. It would not be long before they would reach the border of Olun and enter into the kingdom of Clanden. Drumell was around forty miles beyond the border. It was the only town they would hit prior to reaching the seaport of Haldar.

The pair had not entered into much conversing for a number of days, ever since they had left the seaport of Redrock. Seleena wondered if Azuria participated in the behavior of sulking. She certainly could not tell. The woman did not generally display her feelings openly, keeping them silently within.

Azuria led her horse into the woods. Twilight was approaching. She stopped when there was a thinning of the trees. There was no established camp site for travelers, but it offered substantial space for a night's rest.

After setting up for the night and a meal, Azuria began conversing.

Have you given thought to my question about the Inner Sanctum?

    Actually, I have.

Have you come up with a resolution to the issue?

    A possible one, yes.

Interesting. I still have not. Are you willing to share it with me?

That was different, thought Seleena. She was asking without a commanding tone in her voice.

If you wish me to, I will replied Seleena.

    I'm all ears.

You have an existing Inner Sanctum with twelve members. Simply demote me and you would be as you were.

The woman was still capable of surprising her, thought Azuria. In the history of the order, at least as far as she knew, no one had ever offered to be demoted. There are those that had fought to stay in the Inner Sanctum, which was understandable. Azuria reflected on what her riding companion suggested, rather than verbally respond.

Seleena waited patiently for the Supreme High Priestess to speak. She hoped Azuria would agree with and accept the proposal. Then she would be free to head back on her original destination. She would no longer be obligated to attend the meeting.

If I do that, will you tell me how you became part of the Inner Sanctum?

I am not able to do that.

Even if I ordered you to, being the leader and primary authority of our faith?

You are not my primary authority, nor my primary leader for that matter.

Really. Who do you proclaim it to be?

The goddess Nadia is my primary over all else. I serve her before any human being.

You speak true and sincerely. I can easily see that. What I do not see, is how not answering my question is serving Nadia. It puzzles me. I expect you would not share that with me either.

    Seleena made no reply.

    I thought so Azuria remarked.

Silence followed. Seleena thought the conversing would end, but Azuria chose to speak again.

You have a strong closeness to Nadia. It is what prompted me to initiate the coded sayings when we first met on the road. Since then, traveling together, I have sensed that Nadia's power is greater in you than with the others of the Inner Sanctum. I cannot frivolously demote you for that reason.

Seleena's hopes of freeing herself from the woman were dashed in that moment. She had to fulfill her duty as a member of the Inner Sanctum, and could not follow her personal pursuits until the called meeting was over.

Seleena was beginning to think that Azuria was finally done talking, when she started speaking again.

You remind me of someone, Seleena. You are very much like her. Well, except in the aspect that she was impulsive and impatient while you are not.

I suspect I will see her at the meeting commented Seleena.

No. She will not be there.

    Surprised, Seleena asked Why not?

Older women of the order know why. I suspect it has been told to the younger women by those who were around at the time.

Azuria appeared as to be reminiscing before going further.

I used to have a ward when I was younger. She rose in the ranks quickly. She became a Soul Searcher and a High Priestess at an unusually young age. She then reached the level of Soul Speaker. She was my protégé, and I was her teacher. I had expected her to take my place one day.

Azuria stopped in her story. Seleena was not certain if she would continue. She prompted Azuria with a question.

I expect she has since passed away then?

Both sorrow and anger briefly passed through Azuria's eyes.

I am not sure, actually. She had quit the order. A man deterred her from her true path. He had given her a tiger's eye bracelet. She accepted it and wore it. We had argued heatedly on the subject matter. I believe I did not handle it well, and it may have added to her choice to leave. Her name was Ianna, and she became the sorceress that the land of Therran knows.

The news stunned Seleena. It must have showed.

You seem shocked that a High Priestess of Nadia became a sorceress. I do not blame you. But it is my opinion that the goddess Nadia's power within her was too strong for it to ever disappear. We have not spoken since the day she had left the order, and she has not been seen in many a year.... by me or anyone. Although there has been no proof that she has died, I feel in my heart that she is no longer of this world.

Azuria was not aware in the extent of how right she was, thought Seleena. Ianna had passed away, and the proof of Ianna's closeness to Nadia was in her saddle bags. She had made the Haszier, a sacred wand that held Nadia's power and presence.

I am weary of talking and shall go lay down for the night Azuria stated as she rose from sitting. She paused and turned around, half way to her sleeping spot. She made her last statement of the night. I hope you do not make the same mistake as Ianna and let a man deter you from your true path, Seleena.

At mid day the following day, Azuria pulled over to the side of the road and dismounted.

May as well eat here, Seleena.

It was chilly. They ate where the rays of the sun fell upon them. Towards the end of their meal, a blue jay landed by Azuria. The bird changed shape. A middle aged woman stood in its place.

Health and well being be yours, Marium. This is High Priestess Seleena.

    The two exchanged greetings.

I expect you bring news of the war with the harbinger, yes? inquired Azuria.

Yes, as you have ordered. The harbinger is no more. It has been destroyed, along with its army.

That is wonderful news.... and so soon after it appeared. When did it happen?

Two days ago. It is said that a sorcerer named Duntari brought about its demise. The entire city of Charmeth was destroyed, along with the harbinger Shadowed Bat.

Azuria's smile turned to a frown.

    Duntari completely destroyed the city?

Yes. There is no evidence that it even existed.

Thank you for the update, Marium.

I will return to you when there is more to share. Marium reverted to the blue jay form and flew back south.

Azuria placed her attention towards Seleena.

You did not appear surprised when Marium said the harbinger was destroyed. You did not react at all.... not even the slightest bit.

Seleena realized her mistake. She should have behaved as if she had not known. She was not accustomed to deceit, and had not thought about it. Too late now.

You already knew, didn't you? Azuria said more in a statement than an actual question.

Seleena debated about keeping silent. Azuria already knew the answer, so she did not perceive any reason why she shouldn't tell her.

    I did, yes.

I have not seen anyone talk to you., and I have a fast message relay set up. How could you know before I did?

Seleena was not about to answer that.

Let me ask you this, instead. Why did you not inform me when you gained knowledge of it?

I was unsure if I should tell you.

    Why not?

Because you would be unhappy with the answer. There is enough of a distance between us as it is. It would also have led to more questions that I would not be able to share with you. Why add to those that already exist?

Seleena could tell that thoughts were swirling around in Azuria's head. She sat and waited for what the outcome would be.

Let us compromise. If you reveal to me how you knew, I will not pursue it with any questions.

Seleena did not immediately reply. Azuria pushed further for the compromise.

I am making an effort to meet half way. I believe it is only fair if you do the same.

Seleena agreed with her riding companion. She was making an effort.

Alright, I will tell you. When Merrillion left this world, he left an old magic of his creation behind. The knowledge came to me due to that old magic.

Merrillion!! Is it possible that it can occur again?

    Seleena looked at Azuria reprovingly.

I momentarily forgot myself. My apologies. No questions on the subject matter. I will hold to what I said. The meal is done. Let's get going again.

They mounted their horses. Before Azuria initiated her mount to move forward, she made a remark to her riding companion.

You are a very interesting woman, Seleena.

Azuria smiled as she rode ahead of Seleena. She was beginning to make progress. Sometimes it required a small step at a time before longer strides could be made.

That night, Seleena viewed a few images, produced by the communication rings that she and Moreck wore. One of them was a small flying figure that flew out of Duntari's hair and turned into a woman. A fae! Also through the night, she felt scattered flashes of emotion coming from Moreck. Feelings of being inadequate.... and of guilt. Confusion. A very strong desire to see his deceased friend, to speak to his past comrade and mentor. A deep internal ache caused by absence and loss. Her mind, body, and life in general somehow felt hollow due to the tremendous intensity by which Moreck felt.

It did not cause the master swordsman to weep. She could not say the same for herself.

Two days later, Seleena and Azuria stopped along the road for a mid day meal. As they ate, three riders passed them by.

Do you know who those men were, Seleena? inquired her riding companion.

No. I have not met them before.

That is not what I meant. Do you know what kind of riders they were?

No. I cannot say that I do.

They are wearing courier garb, and their horses are bred for speed and racing.

I am not that acquainted with different breeds of horses.

Nor attire, it seems. Likely they carry merchandise that can be placed in a saddlebag, such as gems from Redrock. It is a long ways from the west coast to Drumell, the first town in the eastern kingdom. A caravan with many guards would not be cost efficient. Generally, three to four couriers are hired, and only one carries the gems. They wear a light plate under their shirts to reflect arrows. If they are attacked, they run and outdistance the outlaws. If fighting cannot be avoided, those not carrying the gems will engage in the combat while the other continues to ride on. Many times, there will be trained fighters posed as couriers. It is curious that you do not recognize the outfit of a courier. They are seen on the road and in towns on a consistent basis.

Azuria waited for Seleena to speak. When she did not, Azuria did.

Are you suggesting that a village, large enough to have a Temple of Nadia in it, has never been visited by a courier? No letters or messages are sent to, or received by, the village or the temple? I expect you realize how absurd that sounds.

Seleena had no answer that she could give.... at least not without revealing too much of what she had to keep secret from the outside world. Silence was her only option. She saw no other way around it.

Azuria's frustration kept building as the days passed. The tight-lipped woman beside her was cloaked with many mysteries. She could not afford to lose her patience if she wished to discover the answers to them. In her estimation, she should not have to be put through this. She was the Supreme High Priestess of the Temple of Nadia. A High Priestess that was below her status should not be keeping anything from her. She felt an urgency to move before she reacted recklessly.

The meal is done. Time to get going Azuria informed Seleena.

The two priestesses rode into the town of Drumell. It had sprung up as a mining town, supplying coal. Due to the commerce from Redrock, Drumell attracted merchants that did not deal in coal. Gems and dwarven made items had increased the town's businesses and general income. Drumell was the first town in the Clanden Kingdom to receive the goods from Redrock, and was the main distribution point from which the merchandise was distributed to the rest of the kingdom. Buyers would travel to Drumell in order to get a cheaper price, as it eliminated the added cost of shipment to their home towns. That resulted in pricier and more extravagant inns and taverns to be built, clothing shops, stores that carried traveling gear, a higher population and quantity of visitors, added food markets, an increase of both mercenaries and entertainers, and much more. Drumell was no longer just a simple coal mining town.

Azuria steered her horse to one of the newer, and more expensive, sections of town. She dismounted before an inn called The Black Horse, and went in to get a room for the night. Next to the inn was an establishment that served food. Convenient, as it was nearing dinner time. One stable was located across the street and another a few buildings down. After the room was paid for and gear unpacked, the two women brought their horses to the stable opposite the inn.

Seleena had taken the wand out of her saddle bag. She did not trust Azuria to not go through her things while she was out of the inn room. She intended to walk about the town in search for a specific item. She would require coin. A few of the gems, that Moreck had given her, should be sold and changed into currency. She had not the opportunity to do that prior to her meeting Azuria on the road. Hopefully she would get the chance to leave Azuria's side during the stay in town.

As they were walking away from the stable, Azuria inquired, It is almost time for supper. Shall we dine a bit early? I could use something to eat.

You go ahead. I have not been here before. I'm interested in taking a stroll and exploring the town.

I know Drumell fairly well. I can accompany you and show you the sites.

No, thank you. We have been by one another's side for days, and will be for many more. I could use a little time to myself.

Very well. If I am not at the inn when you return, I'll likely be speaking with the town's governor. Drumell is of a size where it should have a Temple of Nadia within it. There is presently but one temple, and it is of the god Brodar. The first temple to be built should have been of the goddess Nadia.

Well, the town is at the base of the Brodarian Mountains, the domain of Brodar.

Are you saying that you agree with their decision?

No. I am saying that I can understand it.

Still, a High Priestess of Nadia promotes the faith and temple building of its goddess.

Azuria abruptly turned from facing Seleena and left her company, directing her strides towards the eatery. Seleena breathed a sigh of relief. The unending presence of that woman wore on her nerves.

Seleena roamed aimlessly, taking in whatever presented itself. The wandering she did was in the newer section of the town. She had spied a small shop dealing in gems, and sold two to its owner. She did not know if she got the proper worth of coin for them. She was not familiar with currency, appraisals, or exchange. Her stomach urged her to buy something to eat. After buying some honeyed bread, she ate while venturing towards the back and older part of Drumell. A mixture of older and newer buildings came into view. A stretch of ground, on a side street, had no buildings on it. It was occupied by various booths in its stead. Within its midst, she finally found what she had been searching for. A small crowd was gathered at one of the booths, watching a mystic apply his craft. She knew it did not take much power to perform the spells he did. She did appreciate the ingenuity of being able to present magic in an entertaining manner.

The bread was devoured by the time the show was over. Seleena had stayed at the rear of the audience, as they moved forward placing coin in a box situated on the front counter of the booth. This mystic lived on donations. She intentionally was the last to donate. Not knowing what the amount of donation should be, she gave double the coin of the person that had been in front of her.

The mystic was clean shaven and an older man who not yet fully grayed.

I enjoyed your show Seleena stated with politeness.

Thank you. I aim to please. He then added with a genuine smile, More coin that way.

I was wondering if you could assist me on a matter.

The mystic spoke before she could go further.

I am sorry, but I do not engage in magic for any purposes except entertainment.

You misunderstand, sir. It has nothing to do with your magic. You used a wand in your performances. I wanted to inquire where I might be able to acquire a box holder for a wand.

That's a question not often asked of me. I have a few extras, if you are interested.

    I would be, yes.

Come around the counter and follow me through the back curtains the older man stated as he picked up the donation box and closed the drapes that hung over each side of the front opening.

A tent shelter was at the rear of the booth. Seleena entered it behind the mystic.

The man went to a chest and retrieved a wooden box holder for a wand. When he straightened up from bending over, it was done slowly and with a groan.

Old age setting in, I guess he stated grinning. May you never grow old.

Turn around Seleena instructed when he returned to her. The mystic did not turn his back towards her, suspicion arising in his eyes.

I have no object in my hand or on my person. I am not going to bash you over the head with something, or do whatever it is that makes you hesitant. Trust me.

The mystic decided to turn around. Seleena placed her hand at the base of his neck, and moved it slowly downward until it reached the base of his spine.

You had a fracture in your spinal column, though not recent. It did not heal fully or correctly. I'd guess about two years ago something impacted your back. It was here Seleena stated as she placed her hand over a specific spot.

How could you know that? questioned the mystic.

Seleena was not answering. She casted a spell that mended bone and focused on the point that required the healing.

The older man felt instant relief. He bent half forward and then straightened himself. He leaned over further and raised himself up in a quick movement. The mystic repeated that process three more times.

You must be a priestess he stated. No one else could do that.

Seleena did not reply to the comment. Instead, she changed the subject.

Could I see that wand holder now?

The mystic went back to the chest and placed the wooden box in it. Seleena gave him a puzzled look, and began to become concerned that he would not sell her the holder she required.

The man went to his cot and sat on it.

Sit with me he requested. Seeing that Seleena was not moving, he added, Please.

Seleena seated herself on the cot, but not close to him.

The mystic reached under the cot and came up with a different wand holder. Unfamiliar runes encircled the thin box. Seleena sensed an imbued magic.

    The mystic opened the container.

Hold this he ordered as he handed it to her. The older man removed his wand from the leather wand holder attached to his waist. He placed his wand into the wooden holder she held.

Take the wand out of the box he next commanded.

Seleena grasped the wand, but it would not move from its place in the holder when she tried to pull it out. Further attempts were futile.

The mystic reached for the wand and removed it.

Only the person that places the wand in the box holder can take it back out. In all my years of traveling, it is the second one of this type that I have come across. The other I still have and use for my personal wand. I do not know what kind of magic it is or how it works. I only know what it does.

It is amazing! Thank you for showing it to me. I do not mean to be rude, but I must be leaving soon. Could we get back to that wand holder you placed in the chest. How much would it cost to buy it?

It is not for sale. The mystic was chuckling.

What was so humorous? Had she been duped?

Why not? she asked, withholding irritation from her voice.

Because you do not need it.

That's absurd. You know why I came in here. She could not hold back the irritation this time.

Yes, I do. I apologize for having some fun on your account. The reason you do not need one, is because you already own one.

I would know if I did countered Seleena.

Apparently not in this case. The one you are currently holding.... it is yours.

Mine? I doubt I could afford it.

You can afford it when it is given freely. There is no cost.

Surprise and wonder appeared on her features. The gesture seemed too gracious to be true.

Lady, I do not know who you are and it does not matter.... though I believe you are a priestess. You have gifted me with a pain free back. I wish I could give you a gift in return which would be of equal value. Since you were searching for a wooden wand holder, the best I can do is to give you that one. Please accept the exchange of gifts.

Seleena could hardly believe her good fortune. She must have been guided by the hand of Nadia to meet this particular mystic. She thanked her goddess in her thoughts, and would do so again in prayer before she slept that night. Between her magically sealing the box and the magic already within it, the sacred wand Haszier should be safe. The wand was placed in the container while still in its sheath. Having accomplished her goals, she went to the room in the inn to bed down for the night.

At the pace we are traveling, it will be almost a week's time before we reach the seaport of Haldar, then another three days to the city of Thurak Azuria informed Seleena when they had ridden out of Drumell the next day. She reined in her mount to a stop. A bird had landed in front of the riders, and transformed into Azuria's messenger. Marium stood in the center of the road.

"What news have you?' Azuria asked.

There is a new ruler of the Sahama Kingdom. It is the nephew of King Allid, Claven.

King Allid is dead? Azuria asked. The king was a pompous and greedy ass, but easily manipulated due to his earthly vices. She was not as familiar with his nephew. What she did know of him, indicated Claven to be opposite of his uncle.

No. Duntari went into the city and charged King Allid with treason against the people of Therran. He was put on trial and found guilty. His nephew was then appointed the new king of Sahama.

Duntari! Again! What right does Duntari have in charging a king with treason?

It is said that King Allid set up a trap to have Duntari assassinated when he first arrived in the city. That was the charge. King Allid admitted to it during the trial.

What has Duntari done to King Allid? Azuria demanded to know.

He left before the trial was finished. The judges of the trial were the leading authority figures in the city. They pronounced a sentence on King Allid, or should I say ex-king. He is now a servant in the dungeon of the city, cleaning the cells.... and living in one.

Was Moreck with Duntari during this?

No. He was alone replied Marium.

Do you know where Moreck is now?

He entered the Elven Forest, sources in Yornada say. His son Brannon accompanies him, and a priestess of Aideth.

I did not know Moreck had a son.

When his cousin Moran was killed, Moreck adopted his son as his own.

    Anything else?

There is the priestess of Aideth.

Having a healer with them would not be deemed as unusual.

This priestess is Layla, ward of the Supreme High Priestess of Aideth.

The ward of Arien? What would she be doing with those two?

I only know what I have told you already.

Thank you, Marium. Go now. Come back when you have more news.

The messenger reformed into the bird and flew back south. Azuria set her mount into a walk, contemplating all that she had heard. When noon day meal came around, she had halted and ate in silence. There was no exchange all afternoon, including during dinner. Seleena did not complain nor initiate any conversation. She enjoyed not having to listen to or speak with the Supreme High Priestess. She could relax and not have to be on guard all the time. Being like that was exhausting. A hard day's physical labor could not compare to it.

Azuria pulled of the road and into the woods. They came to a small traveler's camp that was not occupied. After setting up camp and eating, she said good night to Seleena and laid down. Seleena bedded down as well.

The following day, Azuria did not keep to herself. Seleena had hoped her good fortune would have lasted another day, but it was not to be.

Every High Priestess should be trained and taught in the lore of the goddess Nadia. Would you not agree? Azuria inquired after she slowed the horse's pace to a walk.

Of course. A ridiculous question, thought Seleena. Why would the woman ask it?

Tell me. How many ways can a priestess become a High Priestess?

Was that a trick question? Seleena placed thought into it prior to answering.

Only one that I know of.

    What would that be?

By the consent of the Supreme High Priestess. Are you indicating to me that there is another way? Seleena wondered.

No. Unless there is something that a Supreme High Priestess does not know, that is the only possible way. Azuria halted her horse and directly faced her riding partner. "I did not consent for you to be a High Priestess. Nor did my predecessor, for I am familiar with all those that she did. Besides that, you are too
