    The Magic and Mystery of the Callanish Complex and the Isle of Lewis

    If Lewis were indeed the sacred isle that generated this complex monument in stone, it would also be a learning centre of the secret and most arcane knowledge. Young priests of their own volition or encouraged by ambitious chieftains, bright administrators and the intellectuals slowly moving up the ladder of recognition, rich pilgrims and those who had been given a sign in dream or vision: all would eventually find their way here, dedicating themselves to the service of the Goddess.

    Preface

    As you read, you will notice that I have used the Professor Thom’s initiated Roman numerals to identify the sites and not the Gaelic names. I don’t really want to use Roman numerals to be honest. Those pesky Romans have a lot to answer for destroying numerous ancient sites. The reason I have decided that the numerals are useful, is that I am aware some readers may wish to cross-reference the sites I am talking about with research material. It is therefore helpful for me to use the same numbering system. I am only doing it for your clarity and ease. We have to call these sites something!

    I have also deliberately chosen to say Callanish and not Calanais. I fundamentally and categorically disagree with Magnus Magnusson where he asserts in the Foreword he wrote for The Official Souvenir Guide (1995) for Historic Scotland that we …now must get used to calling it Calanais, the original Gaelic form of the name…

    No. I won’t. This place is Callanish.

    This entire complex is much older than Gaelic. These sites were born out of a Neolithic Britain. Any attempt to squeeze, shape and mould Gaelic names for these ancient megalithic monuments is nothing but an attempt to undermine the origins of these sacred sites and serve only to identify and separate the islanders from the incomers and the tourists. I was particularly amused to read Julian’s thoughts on the matter of language use in his excellent work entitled The Modern Antiquarian, where he suggests that;

    The Isle of Lewis is currently enduring a peculiar and enforced Keltic (sic) revival, in which its local artists have set up a tenuous link with Carnac in Brittany, and all the local names are being forced into those deadly and protracted Gaelic spellings which appear to exist only to exclude the uninitiated. Cope, J. (1998) p.58.

    Julian Cope does use the recognised names for the sites in his book and I completely understand why. I however, have chosen not to.

    My book is not about the history or archaeology of these sacred sites, but as you will read, my approach is about the power, energy and magic of the Callanish Complex.

    And so it is that I now welcome you to this mystical island and the exciting experience that is The CALLANISH Complex!
