CHAPTER ONE
IN THE BEGINNING
As you know, Tracy, my name is Dane. This is life the way I experienced it beginning at January 1977 of my second year in college. I was in a psychiatric unit. I was half crazy with preparation. I was successfully undercover. I had a way out when the time came. I knew what I was there for. I believed in my ability. I had faith in my deliverer. I knew my plan was good, and for the rest, I could improvise. I was confident that I would succeed, God willing.
I lay down on the bed for a little rest, and darkness flooded my eyes. I did not know how long that I had been asleep, but the room light was still on when I awoke, and it was still dark outside. I arose and again saw a newspaper and a Bible on a night stand by the bed. I had ignored them earlier.
I picked up the newspaper and looked at it. Something caught my eye right away. There was an article entitled: Transporter Now a Reality. I glanced through the article and was caught with the possibility of the realism of the situation. I remember thinking, the future is here.
I thought back to Physics class, to a lecture on electrons, realizing that time is actually electron spin. Reverse the spin, and time is reversed. I was determined to explore the phenomenon later. I began to focus on where to go from there. I had to get them to give me medicine. I would take it at first, then reject it. In that way, I would test them and the medicine.
I decided that the next day I would act depressed. That night, however, since I had made it undercover, I felt that I could afford some sleep. I wasn’t really sure I should. First, I picked up the Bible that lay on the stand and flipped through it. I came to a passage and read, God gives sweet rest to his beloved.
I knew that because I loved my Savior, then I qualified as one of His beloved.
The light went off and on three times. Then it was dark. Finally, after thanking my Maker for my success, I lay my head on the pillow and slept peacefully.
In the morning, as I awoke, I decided to put on the depression act. When they brought breakfast, I looked dejected and refused it. I, sadly, with face toward the ground, sat on the window ledge and leaned my head and shoulder against the window, looking at the frozen, snow ridged street as if depressed.
I began to wonder about you, Tracy, since you had had contact with Dr. Tao also. Dr. Tao entered the room and asked how I was doing. I told him that I was a little down about being in the hospital. He said that he had something to help me to feel better. He left and a little later a nurse entered with pills in a cup. I took the opportunity to ask how you were doing. The answer was alarming. She told me that you were seeing Dr. Tao. I have some nice medicine that will make you feel all better,
she added.
I took the pills and swallowed them with the cup of orange juice she offered with her other hand. I had felt the slash to my dignity when she had said nice medicine
and all better
as if I were a feeble minded little boy. I felt sorry that she had to suffer an unkind heart and a simple mind. She unlocked the cabinet and took out a pair of pajamas and said that I was to change into them. I was amused to be dressed in bedclothes in public when I would be arrested if I wore them on the street, but I had to use them to stay undercover, so I changed clothes, while she watched me undress. The intimacy of the moment aroused me when I saw the desire in her face as I removed my clothes. Then the moment passed.
I did keep my old brown high top shoes and my socks on. I sat on the bed and looked for the newspaper, but the paper and the Bible were gone. My mind began to expand from the medicine, and my body began to contort. My tongue began to twist. My muscles needed relief from the stress.
I began to wonder if that situation was worth investigating what the professor was doing. I remembered you, Tracy, and was reassured that I had to make an effort to put a stop to the professor’s harmful deeds. I thought of how you had been burdened by Professor Tao in class. I had felt the situation was so urgent that I had changed my Physics major to a Psychiatry major to get into your class and investigate. I remembered the scene in class as Dr. Tao had claimed that he had a clinic at which he was practicing inducing hysteria in people. I had begun to make an effort to stop him. My body ached from the twisting as I thought back….
In the beginning, after revealing his cruel activities, Professor Tao had turned his back to the class and was beginning to write on the board. I had gripped his mind with mine. He had scrunched down as if under pressure and said, I have a headache.
After I had released the pressure that I had on his mind, he had turned around, looking at me sitting in the back of the class, and had announced to the class, I will have a case of Schizophrenia for you by Monday.
That was interesting because, up to that point, we had been studying Schizophrenia in class. I decided to fake Schizophrenia using the information we had previously learned in class. I was thinking that maybe that way I could get into the medical system as a patient and investigate his activities. I was hopeful of being able to put a stop to his terrorist activities. The class resumed as if without interruption and, after I left class, I began to work on being symbolic in the things that I said and did. I began acting like there were hidden meanings in the things I saw and did. It was Friday, and I spent the greater part of the day working out a plan.
I started with a proposition. Harmful, illegal activity was being carried out in the medical system in Sun City. Professor Tao had revealed that he was performing experiments by practicing inducing hysteria in patients at his clinic in Sun City. Next, I proceeded to make logical deductions by reasoning. I had gotten pretty skillful at this from a class I had taken called Philosophy of Logic. I moved on to planning as I considered my resources, then organized and added detail. A previous course in Argument and Persuasion proved to be helpful there. It remained for me to get into action and to reach the determined conclusion: The illegal activity must be stopped.
By nightfall I was ready. I called my dad and explained that I was going to the hospital and that I would need him to pick me up in a few days. We talked for a while and then hung up. As planned, Dad called the psychiatrist on campus, and the psychiatrist came to pay me a visit. I prayed for wisdom.
The psychiatrist tried to hypnotize me, talking on in a droning voice. I realized what he was doing when he told me that I looked empty inside. I did not want to go that way, so I broke the hypnosis and left for the women’s dorm for a more dramatic effect. I lay on the floor in the T.V. lounge, then got up and asked one of the students for a Bible. Of course he did not have one, but it got the ball rolling.
Soon a man came in and asked me to go to his car with him. I assumed that he was taking me to the hospital, so I went with him. Sure enough, he took me to the emergency room. For more effect, I clapped my hands in glee as I walked in. I sat in the waiting room until a doctor in a white coat walked in and sat beside me with his back turned to me and his legs crossed away from me. I gripped his mind with mine, and he scrunched down. I released him, and he got up and left.
A lady sitting across from me who had been watching us spoke up. Modern medicine these days,
was all she said.
Soon a nurse came to me and said, I want you to come with me.
I did not want it to seem that easy, so I said that I did not want to go.
He wants you to,
she said, as if I was to catch some hidden meaning in what she said.
I decided that it was time to play along. I got up to go with her. She led me to the emergency area and had me sit on a bed. After a while, a doctor came in and tried to hypnotize me with a pen and a droning voice. I broke through the hypnosis because I did not want to go that way.
I have faith in God. I have faith in God,
I chanted and broke the spell.
As the doctor left, I looked across the room, catching sight of an orderly standing there watching me. He quickly moved out of sight. After a while, a few nurses and an orderly came to me, and one of them said to me, We have a room for you.
I realized that this was my chance to get in, so I got up and walked with them. One nurse cracked a sick joke. I wonder if they will have golf carts when we get to heaven,
she posed scornfully. I realized that she was mocking me, and I pitied her for her simplicity.
We arrived at the room on the second floor and, once inside, they positioned themselves to keep me from the door. A nurse asked me for my belt. Even though I was just acting, this still hit me hard. They really thought that I was crazy and might hurt myself. This is hard,
I remarked impulsively, and handed them my belt. They left, locking the door behind them….
So there I was, still half-crazy from preparation. My muscles ached from the twisting caused by reaction to the medicine. I felt and looked perfectly out of control. My mind
