Prologue
O nce upon a time in a land not so far from our very own lived a group of beings who became the Immortals. This land was called Wicca. The first of the races, the Fallen, created this world. On a dark, stormy night in this land, a seer foretold the coming of the end, and how to sto p it.
One of Fire
One of Water
One of Night and Air
Will destroy.
He who brings ruin
And save all
Through selfless
Sacrifice.
The one is left
Is the rightful ruler
That none shall ever truly defeat.
For years after, Wicca would teach their young the arts of Fire, Water, Nature, and Air, but the true masters of fire, lived past the barren valley, and above the thrashing seas, high in the mountaintops. They are the Dragons, who are born from the lava that boils in the center of Wicca. The phoenix is the only creature that is able rival them, through their shared ability to control Fire. Through the teachings of Water, its children moved like the sea and flowed through troubles freely, but the masters of Water live deep within the water itself. They are only heard in greeting by friends and enemies at their death. They are the merfolk. The masters of Earth are of a lighthearted nature and show great care and kindness in all that they do. They live scattered around Wicca, in the mountains, forests, grasslands, and swamps. They are the dryads. Last, but not least, Wicca’s finest were taught the perplexing art of Air but the true masters of Air are far and few. They live high in the sky, never seen and rarely heard. They are what remain of the Fallen. Those who on land held the art of Air were called witches or warlocks. Those of night that the Seer foretold of could not be found, nor did anyone know what they were until much later.
Many a year passed before the fear of the coming evil caused the High Counsel to take a drastic measure. They banned the teaching of magick for battle in fear that they were grooming the very evil that would destroy their world. Uprising and war were inevitable because the very people of Wicca are of magick. A very few practiced in secret for fear that to stop teaching the great Arts was too damn them all.
Chapter 1
1 5 years ago, the last pureblood member of the Noirheart clan was born, her name, Vanessa De Noirheart. She was a vampire unlike any other with sun kissed skin, midnight black hair, and pure sky blue eyes. She possessed the rarest of all abilities, the power to control light. The sun, which causes headaches and bloodshot eyes in all other purebloods, had almost no effect on her. She was immune and unlike other purebloods Vanessa gained strength from not only the use of her powers, but from the sun.
Vanessa like all other Vampires lived in the Hollow, which is a huge 1,000-foot wide amazon redwood tree. The highest branches reached the stratus clouds, enabling those nimble climbers a chance to see from the Siren Sea to the Peak of Dragonmort Mountain. The Hollow’s roots are buried deep in the heart of Wicca; bring up water which is potent with minerals that tint it, a subtle red. Long ago, the first vampire Cordline Noirheart found that her children were not only sustained, but were also made stronger, by the strange water. Without it, she knew her children would have to hunt once more, not only hurting but also killing, both those who willingly and unwillingly gave their lifeblood when the hunt took too long. This was important to Cordline, for with each life a vampire took through their fangs, a piece of their soul was taken with the death, causing pain and nightmares that drove the being insane. The killing took away their humanity, creating a Red Blood, who’s only thoughts would be to get more blood. They lose the gift of tolerance for the sun and are burned until they are little more than ashes in the wind. Only those who are transformed can become a Red Blood. The nightmares will plague a Pure Blood, one who is born a vampire from a vampire. Those that live through the transformation to become a vampire, and have not yet lost their humanity are known as Blue Bloods. Who are unable to disobey a direct order from any Pure Blood. Blue Bloods are able to withstand the sun, but it bestows immense pain that only fades as centuries go by. The first class, the royals and rulers, are the Pure Blood, then the Blue Bloods, and lastly the Red Bloods, who are hunted and killed for the misdeeds that follow the inability to control themselves in the lust for endless blood.
Present day
Each day Vanessa would sneak out of the Hollow. During these outings Vanessa ran, danced and studied the living world around her, as well as visiting the neighboring town of white witches. Vanessa spent most of her time in their library learning all she could about what little known magick there is involving light and shadows.
During Vanessa’s studies in the coven’s library, she discovered that most witches did not like the vampires because many were the victims of Red Bloods and the Race Wars in the olden days, and many still carry the scars. The witches called this time in their history the "die sanguninis or the
days of blood because of the lives that were lost in one of the biggest raids made by the Red Bloods before they were all hunted down. The white witches also found the need for blood of any kind a vile perversion of nature. Nature was their magick source as well and the thing they seek most to protect and balance. The greatest rule of the white witches is to
harm none or the rule of three shall come upon thee, meaning
Each deed done will come back to the person that did it multiplied three times".
One day while studying Vanessa stumbled upon the burnt pages of the book History of Day and Night
. Within it a passage caught her eye.
Lost in thought over the strange passage Vanessa looked through the old oak branches that shaped into a window and saw the sun setting. Jumping from the table, Vanessa left the books as well as the notes she had taken scattered around the table in her hast to get back within the Hollow before anyone awoke. She ran as fast as she could over the hill, through the fields and forests to the base of the mighty tree. Vanessa hurried inside the great tree just as the sun finished its decent, and straight into her mother.
Vanessa you reek of sunlight! I have told you a hundred times. It is forbidden to go out during the day! Go wash up immediately and dress properly. How on the moon you could ever dress in those outlandishly bright colors I will never know. When you are done with that, join us in the main dining hall for breakfast,
said Aequa Noirheart.
Yes mother
said Vanessa, as she started to climb to the top of the tall tree, where her private rooms were located.
Aequa was the current reigning queen of the Pure Bloods, and thus of all vampires. She is five feet four inches with hair so black it looks blue, pale flawless skin with violet eyes, high cheekbones, a small nose, and long slim fingers. Aequa rarely showed any emotion towards the child she bore other than discontent. Aequa’s gifts were of mindreading and blood control, which means that Aequa can control the blood within another or use her blood as a living rope. Aequa, muttering under her breath, angrily walked down the hall to the formal dining room.
Belittling child will be an incompetent ruler, running wild and free. The sun is the only thing denied to our people and it’s just that darn ability, which enables her to do that horrid day walking. Ungrateful and undeserving little wretch…
said Aequa to herself as continued down the hallway.
Meanwhile back in Vanessa’s room, a place much bigger than needed, with natural dark wood floors and walls covered with luxurious red and black curtains, which hid a mural of the world around the Hollow in the light and a forest that Vanessa repeatedly saw in her dreams. The only other adornment to the walls was the Noirheart crest tapestry, hung above the large dark four poster bed that was draped in dark red. Vanessa dragged herself into the only room she had any say in designing. The large connected bathroom had dark wood walls and marble floor, tub and sink. A servant, a human who had agreed to serve the Noirheart family in exchange for a favor helped Vanessa undress. These servants are not slaves as many other immortal families employ. They are given free food lodging and are paid in five solid gold coins a week. They are also allowed to leave every day and can visit the mortal world with permission. Vanessa walked over to the only window and opened a hidden panel in the wall and dropped a piece of paper with a note that said
Alice will you please bring up some water for a bath?
asked Vanessa.
Less than ten minutes later Alice and six other male servants come into the room, each carrying two buckets of steaming water to fill the bath. After dumping the buckets into the tub the six males bowed quickly to Vanessa and left quickly.
Anything else princess?
asked Alice Nox with her head bowed eyes down cast.
No, enjoy some time off.
Before tuning on her heal and leaving Vanessa alone Alice said, As you wish.
Vanessa quickly washed and dressed in a gown of an off white spider-silk that flowed loosely to the floor, cinched around the waist with a black leather ladies belt, which had a carving of a crescent moon. She clasped a black teardrop choker at her throat and slipped into her favorite black leather boots. She left her hair done in a soft bun with small braids crowning her head, twisting around the small silver crown that rested across her forehead.
Vanessa, are you ready?
asked Author Noirheart the current king and Vanessa’s father.
Standing at seven feet eleven inches and well-toned with the same black hair and light blue eyes as Vanessa, which always shone bright and would glow with a warmth so unlike her mother. Like all immortals he was given gifts at birth. The females are gifted with control over the elements while the males are gifted with power useful to war as the woman wield political power and the males wield military power. Only in agreement can war be made. Author’s gift was of speed and aim. He is unable to miss anything he aims at.
Yes father,
said Vanessa.
Placing a hand on Vanessa’s shoulder Author said, Relax, everything will be alright.
Perhaps not, Mother appears to be fed up,
said Vanessa tiredly.
Would you like a punching bag then, for your combat training or maybe something that won’t die at the use of a little light magick?
asked Author with a small smile on his face.
Confusion evident on
