Family
To my mother and father who have supported and motivated me through all of my aspirations and activities. My brothers who add laughter and joy to my life. My grandparents on both sides who have participated in all of my sports and other hobbies and will always be special in my life. Also to my wonderful cousin Rachael who has grown up with me and provided me a true person to look up to and who has been like a loving sister to me throughout the years.
Childhood friends
I love you guys so much. Marissa, Tori, and Gabby have known me since I was five and we still share the same bond and a strong friendship.
Supporting friends
As middle school and high school have gone by, I have made really good friends who make everything so much brighter. Thank you Krista, Marschke, Linzy, Ellen and Olivia. You guys are the best.

Beautiful Disaster
Middle school was over now and soon I was going to be a freshman at a new school that I have never been to before. My parents moved so much that I started not to care whether I made friends or not. I graduated eighth grade at Nelson Junior High, even though I was only there for three months. My heart panged to say what I really wanted, but I refused. My parents were happy, so I faked a smile to see their brightness show. My mother had long golden locks. Her smile was magical and her eyes were an emerald green. My eyes were from her. My father had dark brown hair. His laugh along with my mom’s smile almost made it seem like a beautiful painting. And here I was, their only offspring. No good qualities, nothing. I was short. And I had dirty blonde hair - a mixture from both my parents. I didn’t get my father’s straight hair, but instead had long curly hair that reached down to my waist. I wasn’t self-absorbed like other girls were with themselves, maybe because there was nothing special to speak of. I always felt like I didn’t belong with my parents. For a 15-year-old, I acted like I was in my thirties. My mother always said that I acted older than my real age. I knew from day one that I was just a disaster.
It’s hot!
I whined. My hand slowly drifted to the car door and pressed lightly on the arrow for the window to slide down. I watched carefully and waited for the air from outside to slither through the crack and brush through my hair.
Be careful honey, your flowers might get ruined,
my mother warned.
I glanced down at the small bouquet of yellow roses. I remembered when I got them from my classmates; I held back a laugh and pretended to be in awe. Yellow roses are something you give to your grandma when she’s in the hospital. I turned away and pouted.
Nana look, that’s your school! It’s huge!
My father pointed to the left side of the car at the school. Both my parents smiled at the overly large building. But instead, I just stuck my tongue out at it. I was flustered.
Natalie it’s beautiful, isn’t it?
my mother asked, her eyes noticing every detail of the building. I smiled lightly. My parents were enjoying this and they were excited. I once again hid my feelings and closed them in my little box.
It’s wonderful! I’m excited to start fresh again, and you guys chose an awesome high school for me to start off with.
Both my parents turned to see my expression. I looked at mother first, she seemed sad, and then at my father, who seemed upset about something. The atmosphere completely changed.
What’s wrong?
I asked in confusion. Just a second ago they were all chirpy.
We’ve moved you around so much…
my mother muttered.
We’re sorry, we never once thought about your feelings…
added my father.
I felt a surge of happiness melt over me. They knew my true feelings. A smile spread across my face and my mother grinned back.
Everything in Florida was perfect. Looking outside the window, I felt triumph believing that this was the place we were going to finally stay from now on. Our own home… I giggled at the warm words and was ready to bounce out of the car in anticipation of our new house appearing. The neighborhood was brilliant and colorful. Every house was painted a different light pastel color. The car came to a turn on a driveway that led to a light blue house with a white fence that surrounded a yard with bright, healthy green grass.
We’re home… how do you like it Nana?
whispered my father enjoying the sight in front of our eyes.
I’m speechless…
I breathed.
My mother was the first to step out of the car. She closed the door behind her and opened mine. An empty hand waited for me and I grasped it with excitement. My smile grew brighter and my dimples were probably showing, but I didn’t care. This was a dream home and it was ours. I felt like I was on top of the world because we were actually going to stay here forever. I giggled in the moist warm air and inhaled the sweet smell of colorful daisy’s that were planted in front of the white porch. The house was cute and a bit small, but comfortable for three people. A wonderful feeling came over my stomach, my smile never faded and I had my parents on either side. We were all happy for once. I didn’t have to hide anything. I was me and they were them. At this moment, my life was like a miracle to its fullest; everything about it seemed perpetual.
We sang old lullabies that night in our cozy house. My mother’s sweet alto and my father’s deep tenor and my misplaced voice sang in the softly lit family room. Smiles and laughter were all our tiny family needed, it was all I needed. Happiness was the key to my heart.
Nana! Tomorrow we have a surprise for you… we are leaving early in the morning, so make sure you set your alarm clock, okay honey?
explained my father.
Oh! I like surprises,
I giggled. Okay I’ll make sure to be ready!
I jumped up from the couch and walked down the freshly painted hallway. My room was the first on the right, and was enveloped in a bright warm pastel yellow. I set the clock and plopped down on my bed and stared at my high ceiling with glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to it. I forgot that I put them up
