CHAPTER 1
21st Century Parent
No Parent Left Behind was designed as a conceptual framework to enhance the parenting experience. The researcher believes that by exposing relevant data sets on the impact of the 21st century parent’s yields and opportunity for positive change in the overall growth and development of all parents. The prevalence of fragile families varies substantially by race and ethnicity. In 2008, 72% of African American babies, 53% of Latino babies, and 66% of Native American babies were born to unwed mothers
(A. Kalil and R. N. Ryan, 2010). No Parent Left Behind will afford insight that cultivates and transform parents to ensure their children become constructive 21st century citizens. A 21st century parent should constantly pursue continual transformation to reinforce and assist the overall development of his or her children’s augmentation in a global society. This book will uncover significant pedagogical data as it relates to educational outcomes and successful parenting strategies.
As an educator, my aspiration is to present creative ways to get parents involved in their children scholastic life from start to finish. Students cannot accelerate effectively unless parents play an active role from Kindergarten to graduation. Parents often look for rational measuring instruments when seeking ways to determine their success or overall involvement in their children’s lives. Itemized beneath exist two very useful stratagems used by todays leading professionals Dr. Jawanza Kunjuf’s quote and Dr. James Harris strategies for improving student achievement.
Parents should draw comparison between the amount of CD’s and DVD’s versus books in their home when looking at the family’s focus on education (Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu).
The 10th strategy in the 10 Essential Strategies for improving student achievement is accountability (Dr. James Harris).
Parents are the most critical component for the growth and development of their children and consequently they hold the greatest level of accountability.
White House Honors Parents as Champions of Change Posted on August 31, 2012 by Cameron Brenchley
In a recent speech, Secretary of Education "Arne Duncan" noted that parents understand better than anyone how important it is that schools prepare students for success in life—not just with academic knowledge, but with the skills needed to succeed in jobs and to be an active participant in society.
Image6493.JPGParents and guardians are key to student achievement, which is why the White House recently recognized the importance of parental involvement by honoring 12 parents as Champions of Change,
The American family is not what it used to be it is so much more, suggest findings of one of the most extensive surveys ever done on attitudes toward families.
The definition of family
has grown to include more than just the stereotypical married Mom, Dad and Kids. The survey, by Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., was based on responses from 2,691 adults surveyed. Findings:
• 86% say a single parent and child are a family;
• 80% say an unmarried couple living together with a child is a family;
• 63% say a gay or lesbian couple raising a child is a family; Meanwhile,
• 88% say a childless married couple is a family—but
• 54% say a cohabiting couple with no children is not a family;
• MARRIAGE: Nearly 40% say it’s becoming obsolete
How has this modification in the family structure impacted education over the last fifty years?
Do you think African Americans are less persistent about going to school than fifty years ago when they did not have a choice of going? Do you believe that some people do not care about what their ancestors went through to give them the type of education they have today?
50 years ago children WANTED an education. 50 years forward, I believe there is a significant amount of children who DO NOT want to have an education.
50 years ago there was only one way of teaching, off the blackboard. If children did not behave, they were disciplined, and the discipline got them back on track. 50 years forward, there are various methods of teaching, such as Socratic seminar
,
differentiation of instruction, technology, cooperative learning, and project based learning
. Sure, these are fancy methods of teaching, but are they the most effective for the majority of children? Teachers appear to want their classes to be fun, and may compromise learning for fun. Education is about learning and should not be compromised for fun. I believe that with innovation and creativity a teacher has the ability to enhance learning to be more exciting.
I believe that if the children of 50 years ago had today’s education, with today’s resources, the education system would work perfectly. Could you imagine, having a classroom full of little Booker T. Washington’s or a class, where every student wants to learn at an accelerated rate to achieve the best in life. Now in today’s era you have bright and able students barely performing due to reluctance and the lack of motivation. This is really a far cry from Booker T.Washington Up from Slavery
or W. E. B. Du Bois who was the first African American male to receive his PH.D from Harvard University.
Involving Parents in K-12 Education (by President Barack Obama)
In today’s global economy, a high-quality education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity—it is a prerequisite for success. Economic progress and educational achievement are inextricably linked, educating every American student to graduate from high school prepared for college and for a career is a national imperative. The President has articulated a goal for America to once again lead the world in college completion by the year 2020, and all of President Obama’s education efforts aim toward this overarching objective.
To create an economy built to last, we need to provide every child with a complete and competitive education that will enable them to succeed in a global economy based on knowledge and innovation. To provide a high-quality education to all American children, President Obama has advanced reforms around four key objectives:
• Higher standards and better assessments that will prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace
• Ambitious efforts to recruit, prepare, develop, and advance effective teachers and principals, especially in the classrooms where they are most needed
• Smarter data systems to measure student growth and success, and help educators improve instruction
• New attention and a national effort to turn around our lowest-achieving schools.
The Obama Administration has designed and implemented several initiatives to strengthen public education for students in every community nationwide:
Parental participation is of critical importance for the success of our nation’s schools. Parents will always be a child’s first teacher and advocate. President Obama has called on parents to be real partners in education with their children’s teachers, from cradle to career. The Department of Education has proposed to double funding for parent engagement to a total of $270 million, while also enhancing information
