She has heard many an astonishing tale first hand, as her students confide in her the arduous journeys they undertook traveling to the US in an attempt to improve the quality of their lives. Mexico is a dynamic country. The people are warm, loving and resourceful. Poverty grips the nation, and sometimes people have to make hard decisions in order to make financial ends meet. This story, although fictionalized, tells the tale of an adolescent boy who tries to do what he thinks is best, despite the fact he has no parents to confer with and little experience in the world. This story represents the plight of multitudes of young teenagers in Mexico today. Their parents have come to the US to find work, become entrenched in a new life, and, often, are not able to simply return home. When you read about Miguel, know that other young people in Mexico today share a similar experience.
Exhausted orange butterflies quivered on the welcoming branch of an oyamel tree. The whole forest glowed with the aura of thousands of Monarchs. Miguel breathed in deeply and his long exhale created a cloud of vapor in the frosty air. He liked climbing up to these woods above his village to be alone with his thoughts. The almost palpable silence of the forest beckoned. The tall trees blanketed in the rich orange of butterfly clusters seemed teeming with muse summoning him to listen to their whispers and heed their inspiration.
