Volume 1 of Stalking the Antichrists and Their False Nuclear Prophets, Nuclear
Gladiators, and Spirit Warriors,1940-1965 is essentially an enhanced memoir.
It is based for the most part on my personal observations and knowledge and
specialized information from my academic studies of history, political science,
and literature at Grove City College and the University of Chicago,as well as my
professional insights into the heart of the U. S. Navy (1953-1957, 1960-1961[OP-
09D]) as an Air Intelligence Officer in Hawaii and Japan and the Pentagon; political-
military/counsellor assignments in the State Department as a Foreign Service
Officer(FSO-6) at the American embassy in Paris (1962-64); and a speechwriter in
the Navy Department (1965).

In volume 2, the textual narrative begins with the end of my specific actions/
activities in the Navy and Foreign Service in July 1965, which I have called How
I Lived in History, 1950-1965. In retrospect my entire Navy careerfrom my commissioning as Ensign USNR, 1355 AIO, in early September 1953 at Naval
Station, Newport, Rhode Island, to my first honorable discharge at Treasure
Island on August 27, 1957was in preparation to an understanding of World
War II and the Cold War.

Volume 1 of Stalking the Antichrists and Their False Nuclear Prophets, Nuclear Gladiators, and Spirit Warriors,1940-1965 is essentially an enhanced memoir. It is based for the most part on my personal observations and knowledge and specialized information from my academic studies of history, political science, and literature at Grove City College and the University of Chicago,as well as my professional insights into the heart of the U. S. Navy (1953-1957, 1960-1961[OP-09D]) as an Air Intelligence Officer in Hawaii and Japan and the Pentagon; political-military/counsellor assignments in the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer(FSO-6) at the American embassy in Paris (1962-64); and a speechwriter in the Navy Department (1965).

For the purposes of these two books, my specialized information and observation and knowledge about contemporary history and American history came from living through World War II and the Cold War (1939-2012) and an in-depth study of history at Grove City College (1946-50) and the University of Chicago (1950-53, 1958-1960). Beginning in 1958 I started to prepare for my dissertation on Cold War Navy issues—The Navy and the Limited War Doctrine, which was changed in early 1960 to The Navy and Deterrents/Deterrence Theory—and was eventually published by Little, Brown as The Age of Deterrence (1964).

In volume 2, the textual narrative begins with the end of my specific actions/activities in the Navy and Foreign Service in July 1965, which I have called How I Lived in History, 1950-1965. In retrospect my entire Navy career—from my commissioning as Ensign USNR, 1355 AIO, in early September 1953 at Naval Station, Newport, Rhode Island, to my first honorable discharge at Treasure Island on August 27, 1957—was in preparation to an understanding of World War II and the Cold War.

I recall excitedly listening on my own little Emerson radio to the beginnings of World War II on a family vacation at Lake Conesus, New York. And I followed the war from its roots in Poland/England and France to Pearl Harbor/Ford Island’s Battleship Row to NAS Atsugi—where General McArthur first touched down in Japan in late August 1945. Atsugi was also the home where the famous U-2 spy planes were based from 1957-60, snapping photos of the bombers and missile bases of the Soviets’ nuclear deterrents.

These events are related in my The Age of Deterrence (1964), dating from that historic day August 27, 1957, of the first successful Soviet ICBM test. Those Soviet rockets also boosted a beeping Sputnik into Earth’s orbit on October 4, 1957, and thereby triggered the great Soviet-American arms race from 1957-1991.

Volume 2 follows the evolution of the Doctrine of Deterrence and the related military deterrent weapon systems: bombers (B-29, B-50, B-36, B-47, B-52) and Soviet Bisons, Bears and Missiles (MRBMs, SLBMs, ICBMs); U.S. ICBMs (Atlas Titan, and MM), MRBMs (Jupiter, Thor), and Navy (SLBMs); and their Soviet counterparts (1945-1991).

Volume 2 also traces the evolution of the great meme of Deterrence from the first two A-bombs (fission) dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 6 and 9, 1945) and the Soviets’ August 29, 1949, test of their first A-bomb, to the U.S. H-bomb (fusion) tests of November 1, 1952, and March 1, 1954, and the Soviet H-bomb tests of 1952/1953—the world’s first droppable H-bomb.

The next crucial phase of Deterrence theory was the development of an invulnerable second strike system, the Polaris deterrent, operational in late 1960. The Soviets’ missile-firing subs appeared in 1964. Then the doctrine of Mutual Deterrence arrived around 1965—when both the United States and USSR had invulnerable second strike deterrents and "thus unconquerable forever’’ (Leo Szilard).

With the advent of MIRVED ICBMs/SLBMs (multiple independently targeted warheads) in the 1970 (United States)-1975 (USSR), a new Soviet-American arms race began, which ended with the arrival of nuclear parity by the late 1970s—a more stable era? Not necessarily. There was ‘‘near’’ nuclear war in 1983!

However, the nuclear Crazies of RWR (1981-88) refused to accept the nuclear stalemate/parity and threatened the Soviets with improved new targeting: decapitation weapons like 1980-83[Pershing 11/SDI-Star Wars and related Doctrine ["Evil Empire’’/Mutual Assured Survival [MAS] vice, MAD—[Mutual Assured Destruction and the KAL-007 Incident). Nuclear war threatened in 1983: Pershing IIs in Germany and the KAL-007 incident, shoot-down near Sakhalin on September 1, 1983, of a Korean jet airliner killing all 269 passengers.

Thus threatened by RWR and his nuclear Crazies, Soviet Premiere Andropov ordered the acceleration of the Soviet Doomsday Machine, which went operational on New Year’s Day 1985—three weeks before RWR’s great landslide victory celebrations of January 20, 1985.

In Reagan’s second term, the United States and Russia began getting serious with real reductions in nuclear warheads, beginning in 1987 with the INF-MRBMs declines in Europe and followed by the START and MIRVED ICBM warhead decreases (from 20,000 warheads in the 1990s to around 2,000 today and dropping to 1,550 under the START Treaty of 2010) (Kaplan, Time, September 25, 2010).

And that, dear friends of the Green Vital Center is the challenge faced by the presidential candidates in shaping the national security issues centering around the very illusive, deceptive, and confusing doctrine of that great meme of nuclear deterrents and deterrence.

It is my hope that these two volumes of Stalking the Antichrists will help the American people understand the Great Invulnerable Nuclear Deterrent and the Doomsday Machines—actual (Russian) and virtual (American, SIOP)—which continue to deter a secular World War III or prevent a religious Armageddon.

Specific Overview of Volume 2 (1965-2012) by Presidential Administrations from Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) to Obama

After leaving the Pentagon for the last time in May 1965, I had only few regrets and fear that LBJ was going to expand the Vietnam adventure into a full-scale Limited War on the Asian mainland—again. Hence, I decided to write about what I had discovered in the first half of 1965—that is, during Operation Rolling Thunder. While in the Pentagon in early 1965, I looked up some of my old Navy friends/acquaintances. One of them told me a startling fact: the U.S. Destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin were never fired on by the North Vietnamese. In fact, he told me, that William Bundy in McNamara’s office was heading a team that was trying to create an incident so that LBJ could use it as a justification for expanding bombing, which was eventually called Operation Rolling Thunder (February-May 1965).

So I decided to gather materials for a new book, Hawks, Doves, and Others(Owls), which I began in the fall of 1965 and continued writing it until I was hired by the U.S. Office of Education as an information and reports officer (August 1966), thanks to the State Department’s placement office for FSOs.

I never finished the book but gave a draft copy to B__ on Senator Fulbright’s Foreign Relations Staff. B__ said my new Intel regarding no North Korean firing on the U.S. DDs in the Gulf of Tonkin was very interesting and damning. If true, there was no basis for the Congressional August Gulf of Tonkin Resolution or any vindication for LBJ’s retaliatory air strikes versus North Vietnam during the 1964 election campaign against General Goldwater. And there was no justification for Operation Rolling Thunder either.

Furthermore, B__ said he believed me, but Senator Fulbright would need paper documentation—not just any word from a Navy Admiral. B__ then turned around, looked up at the old Victorian wooden transom, and said What we need is someone throwing a bunch of documents through that transom up there. That chat with B__was in fall 1965, and history would have to wait until 1971 when Daniel Ellsberg dumped the RAND/Pentagon Papers on the New York Times and Washington Post. However, although Nixon failed to get the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the publication of the famous Pentagon Papers, the ‘Nam killing went on for four more years.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of U.S. troopers were dead, and millions of Vietnamese were also killed in that lost war, from 1965 to 1975. By then I had finally stopped trying to save the world and had turned my interests and enthusiasm to Earth Day, Environmental Education, and the Third Great Environmental, Ecological Conservation Movement of the early 1970s.

And you know what? It was a great relief to be free from my obsession with Deterrents and Deterrence—until Secretary James Schlesinger started pedaling his crazy/evil theories of controlled thermonuclear war and his extended deterrence doctrine in 1972-1975 under Nixon and Ford. Ford fired the arrogant Schlesinger and also let Kissinger go, replacing him, ironically, with Rumsfeld as (Secretary of Defense and Cheney as the youngest White House chief of staff).

They had their own immense plans and perverted, evil strategies for President George W. Bush to eventually follow (2001-2008). (See PartVII for two disastrous new Expeditions to Sicily [Iraq and Afghanistan], which almost destroyed American democracy and the American dream during the first frightening decade of the twenty-first century [2001-2009]. See also the conclusions and postscripts after the text, which ends on December 31, 2012, except for my political-military addenda.

Thanks to Senator Mike Mansfield’s AA, Dr. Steve Ebbin, my education career began anew, teaching at Mount Vernon Seminary and at University of Maryland (History Department)/U.S. Office of Education (1966-88). Dr. Steve Ebbin once again came to my rescue regarding Mike Mansfield’s intervention with McNamara’s office and with his speechwriter, Richard N. Goodwin.

I was then hired by the Office of Education and began my new career from 1966 to 1988:

[1966-88]Speech writer—1981-88, Secretary Ted Bell/Assistant Secretary Ron Kimberling/my mole days[1981-88] among the right-wing Republicans, Fundamentalist Christians and colleagues, ‘‘Chuck’’ Heatherly, Bob Brown, Rev. Harry Gardner; Nova Scotia Summers [1982—2009]; First Draft of Jews/Jesus & Armageddon[1984-85].

Finally, in August 1988, with my pension, marriage and health intact, I retired to Stuart, Florida, with Charlotte, kind dog Heidi, and five cats.

During an emergency operation for burst appendix in mid-November 1988, the Barred Owl did not call my name, but it was a close thing. Then I went teaching U.S. History at Palm Beach Community College, Barry University and subbing in Stuart Public Schools. I acquired my nine needed quarters for Social Security, Part B by my sixty-fifth birthday and thus ended the Education phase of my new career.

Then I finally quit teaching after forty-three years (started in 1950 at Fox Lake, Illinois). I began writing It Can Happen Here: A Fascist Christian America on May 17, 1998, and finished the first draft by Labor Day. It was eventually published in two volumes—with Tom B. Ross’s help and political encouragement—in early 2001, delayed by a serious case of viral pneumonia. It had been configured and modified with the help of Tom to use versus candidate George W. Bush, but my illness hindered and delayed publication, and thus it had no possible impact on the 2000 election campaign.

However, a challenging second career of writing books began and continues unto this very day: Truth Seeking (2006), Birding and Mysticism (two volumes), and Stalking the Antichrists (two volumes).

Prequel/Introduction to Volume 2

of Stalking the Antichrists, 1965-2012

By a wonderful synchronicity, the early July 1965 decision by LBJ to fight another Limited War on the Asiatic mainland was also the hinge date that I personally made my decision to turn my back on any more political-military activism (1960-1965).

I focused my career and future on two broad themes: education and environment:

o   Bird watching with a group of friends—the Fort Washington Bird Club, and Environmental Studies, the Environmental Education Act [PL. 91-516, 1969-1974], Earth Day, 1970—/ International Environmental Education Education at Helsinki/Belgrade/ Tbilisi /Alexandria, Egypt—during The Third Great Env/Eco Movement (1968—1980), hopefully followed by The Fourth Great Green Env./Eco. Awakening of 2000-2025[see Vols. #1 & #2 of Birding & Mysticism [2009] & Vol. #3-"The Neo-Tropical Bond: White Gringo Birders & Brown Maya Bird-Watchers[2014].

Why the career switch to education? Deterrents and Deterrence, which had so consumed me since I first began to tangle with that fascinating but illusive topic (1958)—like the mystic who wrestles with God—had cost me two great jobs, much mental stress, house arrest (five months), and bureaucratic exile (four months). Moreover, I had welcomed revelations—the Military Industrial Congressional Religious Complex (MICRC), the Militarization of our society, and the "taming of the Cold War. All of which constituted impossible career hurdles and were, in fact, intellectual luxuries" for someone not independently wealthy and with no real societal base except for a set of liberal beliefs, insights, and obsessions with the powerful rational memes of Deterrents/Deterrence and Containment.

Yes, it’s true. As the old maps warn, Be there! Tigers, Dragons, monsters out there to slay!

But I’m not Saint George! So I took myself out of the lists, hoping to join the battle sometime in the distant future—when my girls were educated and settled, I was retired and had few money worries.

With the help again of Dr. Steve Ebbin, I found a part-time position directing a summer program at Mount Vernon Seminary, hired Steve and Professor Russell Farnen, and continued teaching American history and Western Civilization two evenings a week (NSA) and Saturday mornings for the University of Maryland’s History Department (1965-1970). Steve Ebbin also had his boss, Senator Mike Mansfield, intervene with Secretary McNamara’s office to get my Stop Hire Order lifted.

Then the State Department, per our legal agreement, located me a GS-13 position in Office of Education’s International Education/Foreign Studies Division as Information/Reports Officer where I stayed until my retirement from the federal government on August 1, 1988.

I bought a decent house in good birding territory—Fort Washington, Maryland—planted bamboo, settled down, raised my two girls, bird watched, played duplicate bridge, collected books, learned to cook and bake, and discovered the Medway River in Nova Scotia (1982-2011) (See my new book, O’Arcadia, Birding & Mysticism, vol. 4).

Surprisingly, for the next twenty-two years, I was almost a model OE/Department of Education bureaucrat, speech writer, and a liberal Democratic mole (1966-88). In those two decades, I was focused on protecting my pension; collecting books; playing bridge with the former Camp De Lodges Bridge Club; writing in my journals, watching birds with Melanie and Dr. Mort Levy; cooking baking; and raising Melissa and Melanie. Charlotte went back teaching (1970) in a changing Prince George’s County Elementary School and put her twenty years in, retiring in June of 1988, as I did on 1 August 1988.

After over thirty years as a federal bureaucrat, we fled in two cars to Stuart, Florida, on Labor Day 1988 with our five cats and my sacred kind dog, Heidi. My brother Dick drove a book truck with my expanding collection. Charlotte was very happy in not having to spend her retirement tears by some frozen Northeastern Pennsylvania Lake. Once a snow bird, always a snow bird. I decided to relax and enjoy the Neo-tropical lifestyle—so much like our happy Hawaiian days at the former U.S. Marine EWA air strip, NAS Barber’s Point in Oahu (April 1955-March 1956).

And so it was from Labor Day 1988 to 31 January 2012. I knew—when I heard the bugling of the Sandhill Cranes on this warm late-January morn, forty-one days into spring and watched an Anhinga soar, flap, flap, flap, soar while the resident flock of twenty White Ibis fed in a damp impoundment—I wasn’t in Scranton. This happened two days before Candlemas or Ground Hog Day.

However, 31 January 2012 was a very special day for I arranged with Xlibris to send in the next fortnight volume 1 and volume 2 of Stalking the Antichrists five years and twenty-six days after my key epiphany in front of John’s Beauty Shop at Jensen Beach. I had my haircut while the two Hospice nurses, Mimi and Maria, were giving my bed-bound Charlotte a sponge bath, watched over by our three kind Jack Russell terriers, Jackie, Sally, and Baby Chidda, my little famillar.

Introduction

Say Not the Struggle Naught Availeth, a poem by Arthur Hugh Clough (1869), is quoted in its entirety by Ted Sorensen.

Clough’s poem is from Sorensen’s Counselor: A Life at the Edge of History (2008) used as sort of a preface. In a little synchronicity, I found Sorensen’s book just hanging around, saw the quote, and suddenly realized that Clough’s poem also applied directly to both volumes of Stalking the Antichrists in general, specifically to my first decade of government service.

During my ten years in the Navy and State Department (1953-1965), there was emphasis on my struggles and what they actually amounted to during October 1958-1 July 1965 as I attempted to understand and apply the arcane theology and meme of Deterrents and Deterrence to the unfolding historical drama within the historical context of another great rational meme - Containment.

And then I tried to conceptualize, apply, marry, or fashion the Navy’s finite deterrent, deployed in the Polaris nuclear submarines’ second strike sub-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) as the key weapons system controlling "invulnerable deterrents" for the impending Age of Mutual/True Deterrence. They appeared in history around 1965, as prophesied by Sir Winston Churchill in his Farwell to the Commons speech in 1955—once the Great Deterrents of the United States and the USSR became invulnerable to an opponent’s first disarming nuclear strike.

However, as of July, 1965, as much as I wanted to believe Churchill’s prophecy and the poet’s words Say Not the Struggle Naught Availeth, I was deeply pessimistic, given LBJ’s expansion/escalation of the Vietnamese War into a classic limited war fought under the shadow of a possible escalation into a thermonuclear World War III.

And then there were all the societal disruptions the Vietnamese War caused—not the least of which were the string of Republican victories (1969-2008)—beginning with Richard Nixon’s very close defeat of Hubert Horatio Humphrey in 1968 and the eventual triumph of the Nixon-Atwater’s Southern strategy.

The locus of the GOP slowly shifted from the Northeast/Midwest—where it was born and elected its first president, Father Abraham Lincoln—to Jefferson Davis’s former Slaveocracy where it is now rooted. Where in 2008, GOP candidate John McCain received more votes in the deep Red States of the former Confederacy than George W. Bush did in 2004—lower middle class White Volk—land of the Peckerwood Nation. The Old South has risen again. Save your Confederate dollars.

And always consider: Mitt Romney was ahead [mid-March 2012] because he was the whitest white man to run for president in years (See Siegel, New York Times, 15 January 2012), an observation that may have caused David Brooks to write, after talking to the Volk of South Carolina, I sometimes wonder if the Republican Party has become the receding roar of white America as it pines for a way of life that will never return (New York Times, 17 January 2012).

Brooks adds, I was also struck, as in New Hampshire and Iowa by the mood of this year’s rallies. Republican audiences this year want a restoration. America once had strong values, they believe, but we have gone astray. We’ve got to go back and rediscover what we had. Heads nod enthusiastically every time a candidate touches this theme (New York Times, 17 January 2012).

Yes, I’m increasingly of the opinion that Lee Siegel is on to something very simple and primitive related to the fear that what the Obamas really represent is The Passing of the Great White Race. In this context, the Republican primary voters see Mitt Romney as the white solution to the problem of a black president and that for the many Americans who find the thought of a black president unbearable, he [Romney] is an ideal candidate (New York Times, 15 January 2012). (I think Romney resembles 666 in the British-produced History Channel series on The Rise of the Antichrist).

Admittedly the above distillation of events/happenings from 1965-2012 is not much to be optimistic about, to be sure, yet the struggle must go on, and it’s premature to say that the struggle naught availeth. Still there are times when I am forced to fall back on Herman Melville’s wisdom and that of the ancient rabbis:

One must fight the good fight for freedom, justice, compassion, even if the gods mean you to lose—which they in all probability do.

Just because you may not be able to complete your mission or agenda, that does not give you an excuse to not start doing the righteous thing.

And always recall the moral challenge of Dietrick Bonhoeffer: Silence in the face of evil is in itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.

Another related synchronicity occurred at 10:15 p.m., 23 July 2010, when my nephew Hans von Borcke told me he had finally read Dr. Joshua Christian’s TV address on pages 167-177 of McCullough’s A Creed for the Third Millennium; and I read him the above paragraph, which I had just typed before I listened to Rachael Maddow speculate on the Obama paradox, which is in my opinion directly related to the white rebellion, counter-revolution’s successful use of crypto-racism (clever code words and dog whistle phrases).

Simply put, all of Obama’s accomplishments are but an illusion because everybody knows that blacks aren’t smart enough to accomplish anything—outside of ESPN’s sports—and even there they owe their good fortune to crackers’’ like the late Jew George Steinbrenner and their Black African genes—which protect them from malaria. (My saintly mother, Gert, often warned us to beware of the night air" for the diseases it might carry.)

Regardless of my current pessimism—or perhaps because Sorensen’s admirable/brave use of Clough’s poem—I’m quoting it here to begin volume 2 (or to end volume 1) of Stalking the Antichrists (The Bulbul and the Antichrists-) and let someone else delete it. Besides, I can always blame my choice of poetry (written in 1849 from The Poems and Prose Remains of Arthur Hugh Clough [1869]) on my Daimon, who made me do it:

The Historical Text of Volume 2 Begins on July 1, 1965, after the Failure of LBJ’s Operation Rolling Thunder.

It was then, the summer of 1965 that LBJ signed his fateful decision memo, which, by introducing thousands of ground combat troops into Vietnam, officially began the Second Vietnam War/LBJ’s War from July 1965 to April 30, 1975.

I left the Pentagon for the last time and began my education career, which spanned from July 1965 until August 1988. Frankly, it was a great relief to put The House of War behind me and return to my first love, which was public education.

Almost immediately I started writing Hawks, Doves, and Others (Owls) based on my secret research in the Pentagon regarding Rolling Thunder (February 1965-June 1965). However, the State Department located me a Civil Service position in the Office of Education: Information/Reports Officer, Division of International Studies (Dr. Lee Hamilton).

Having learned my lesson about just how dangerous my knowledge of Deterrents and Deterrence was, I stopped writing Hawks, Doves, Others (Owls) and relegated it to my garage—never to finish it.(I found my lost copy on May 28, 2012 when Hans and I cleared out two decades of papers/clips and rat’s nests. And we also located the original copy of LCDR Lott and my OP-09D "Project ‘72"—precussor to Seven Days in May.)

My wife, kiddies, and cats appreciated my new job, although I continued teaching history in two evening classes (NSA) and Saturday morning for the University of Maryland (1965-1970) until Charlotte resumed her elementary education teaching career at Oxon Hill, Maryland, from 1971-1988.

The predictable failure by July 1965 of the conventional Air Control campaign called- Rolling Thunder, forced LBJ to introduce Army and Marine ground troops once again into combat on the Asiatic mainland and thus turned the Vietnam Civil War into "LBJ’s unwinnable ‘Limited War,’" like Truman’s Korean War (1950-1953).

Unfortunately, it has taken sixty-two years (1950-2012) for America’s leaders and the American people to finally understand what Harry Truman learned in 1950-53. The existence of nuclear weapons in post-Hiroshima wars/conflicts precludes old-fashioned victorious wars of GP no. 2 (1300—1945), so the American people and their politicians must get over it. How many parades have there been to celebrate the end of the Iraqi War (19 March 2003-19 December 2011)? The Korean War? The Vietnamese War? The Afghanistan War?

A decade of death, destruction, and suffering followed, killing millions of innocent Asians ending in a humiliating defeat of the United States and its allies being evacuated by choppers on April 30, 1975, from the roof of the American embassy in Saigon. That defeat of the American military’s Expedition to ‘Nam was specifically selected for its historic and symbolic value by Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, where it symbolically appears on the back cover of his memoirs, Known and Unknown (2011) (as APRIL 30, 1975: THE EVACUATION OF SAIGON.)

That American defeat so seared vengeful memories into Rumsfeld’s mind that during a future Bush ’43 administration, the Rumsfeld-Cheney Cabal (2001-2006) were fiercely determined to avenge America’s spectacular defeat by Ho Chi-Minh and his black pajama-clad Viet Cong. Rumsfeld and Cheney made sure it would never happen again by rebuilding the world’s strongest military only to be defeated again (2003-2011) by primitive Iraqi IEDS and suicide bombers. (By the way, how does one divide the 58,000 of American deaths and 3.6 million casualties of North Vietnamese civilians and allocate them to LBJ and Nixon: 60/40 percent?)

There are, incidentally, enough indirect civilian casualties in Cambodia—Pol Pot’s two million dead in his killing fields—to qualify Nixon as a very, very near Antichrist influenced by his false nuclear prophet Henry Kissinger and their many nuclear alerts. The most terrifying of these nuclear alerts was the "madman" ploy of October 1969. (See below for details of this bizarre nuclear alert, which, although out of chronological order [1969], is included first because this might actually represent the secret plan that Nixon mentioned in his campaign speeches.)

Part IV: 1969—a Special Transition Year

Nixon’s first year, 1969, was a special year. The Nixon-Kissinger madman ploy’s key idea was to threaten Russia with nuclear-armed B-52s in order to compel Russia to convince North Vietnam that Nixon was crazy enough to also attack North Vietnam, and thus, they had better sign a peace treaty with the United States of America—pronto!

o   "In its place, argued the nuclear advocates, would be the Sampson Option. Sampson, according to the Bible, had been captured by the Philistines after a bloody fight and put on display, with his eyes torn out, for public entertainment in Dagon’s Temple in Gaza.

o   "He asked God to give him back his strength for the last time and cried out, ‘Let my soul die with the Philistines.’

o   With that, he pushed apart the temple pillars, bringing down the roof and killing himself and his enemies. For Israel’s nuclear advocates, the Sampson Option became another way of saying ‘Never Again’ (Seymour Hersh, The Sampson Option, pp. 136-137).

o   After the initial surprise defeat of Israel’s armies in the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, there was a real possibility that the nuclear temple weapons might have to be used against the advancing Arab armies to prevent defeat and another Holocaust.

o   At the peak of the crisis, Israeli leaders believed they had three courses of action to stave off defeat:

1.   "Dimona’s [the nuclear weapons plant] supporters had convinced most of the leadership that only nuclear weapons could provide the absolute and final deterrent to the Arab threat, and only nuclear weapons could convince the Arabs—who were bolstered by rapidly growing Soviet economic and military aid—that they must renounce all plans for military conquest of Israel and agree to a peace settlement.

o   It would rally its collapsing forces for a major counter attack.

o   It would arm and target its nuclear arsenal in the event of a total collapse and subsequent need for the Sampson Option, and finally

o   It would inform Washington of its unprecedented nuclear action—and unprecedented peril—and demand that the United States begin an emergency airlift of replacement arms and ammunition needed to sustain an extended all-out war effort" (Hersh, p. 225).

1.   The news of Israel arming its temple weapons was greeted with fear at home and in Washington.

o   The senior official [Israeli] also described the fear that swept through the prime minister`s staff when the arming of nuclear weapons became known: ‘There were a few days there when it seemed that the end of the world was near. For those of us, who lived through the Holocaust, we knew one thing—it will never happen again’" (Hersh, p. 226).

2.   "There ‘was an equally important purpose for the arming of nuclear weapons’—beyond Moscow telling-warning its allies Egypt and Syria ‘not attempt to advance beyond the the pre-1967 borders.’ . . . Such a drastic step would force the United States to begin an immediate and massive resupply of the Israeli military." (Hersh, p. 227, my italics)

3.   There was widespread rage inside the Israeli cabinet at the Nixon White House—aimed especially at Henry Kissinger—over what was correctly perceived in Israel of an American strategy of delaying the resupply in an attempt to let the Arabs win some territory, and some self respect, and thus set up the possibility of serious land-for peace bargaining [or, as Kissinger told SECDEF James R. Schlesinger, to let Israel come out ahead, but bleed] (Hersh, p. 227). Later, during his shuttle diplomacy, Kissinger told Golda Meir, I am an American; second, I am the secretary of state of the United States of America; third, I am a Jew. Meir replied without missing a beat, That’s all right, sonny, we read from right to left" (Hersh, p. 230).

4.   In summary, it was believed that the Israelis had three to four nuclear weapons and would use them if the Syrians broke through. And it was clear that the Israelis were in desperate need of arms/ammo.

5.   Kissinger told Sadat that the sudden American airlift to Israel as a decision aimed at avoiding a nuclear explosion. . . . Sadat further quoted Kissinger as saying, It was serious, more serious than you can imagine (Hersh, p. 231).

6.   And the fact is Israel threatened Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon with the use of nuclear weapons on the third day of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, successfully blackmailing the White House to airlift much needed supplies, which turned the tide of the war and saved Israel from near defeat and the implementation of the Sampson Option (Back book flap).

President Nixon (1969-1974) was a very, very near Antichrist with his enablers led by the Abou ben Adhem of them all: Henry Kissinger and more RAND/Harvard alums (the Yom Kippur War [1973]) and the 1974 nuclear alerts—a near World War III conflict to distract the American people from the Watergate scandal? Why? Because of the Israeli nuclear blackmail: either Nixon supplies Israel with new tanks/ammo or Israel may be forced the use their nuclear weapons (Kissinger and Nixon sent the necessary weapons)—the Sampson Option (Sy Hersh, 1991). Part IV, 1969/1970-1979/1980

Overview and How I Lived in History during the 1970s, with a Prequel on the Oil Imperialism of 1990-2009

The decade of 1970-79 is made up of three presidencies: Nixon, Ford, and Carter. Recall, I decided to use the year 1969 as a prequel to the full Nixon years (1969-74) because of Nixon-Kissinger’s madman ploy and the development of his South—East Asian plans for an extensive conventional bombing campaign in which B-52s’ carpet bombing figured prominently.

In section B, Books and Movies, I have quoted James Grady’s Six Days of the Condor, filmed as Sydney Pollack’s masterpiece, Three Days of The Condor which contained many insights into the way our government really works. It nicely complemented Rod Lurie’s greatly overlooked film Deterrence,[1999] which appeared a bit too early (for the Iraq War of 2003) to be the important movie it was. Why? It could help the American public understand the intellectual framework for the Age of Deterrence, especially the Armageddon football, which contains the nuclear war launch codes and follows the president, like Mary’s little lamb, constantly guarded by a warrant officer. Always ready—if the proper code sequence is inserted—to destroy the green, green hills of Earth with its still blue-green oceans and God’s creation, his very body.

Pollack’s Condor sheds light on the underlying reasons for the Bush-

Cheney-Rumsfeld’s obsession with Iraq and Iran—the very same oil fields that the CIA rogue operation was concerned with securing for America’s control. They almost assassinated Condor as his novel research was about to hit pay dirt—or an oily gusher. The overall effect of the movies—Condor and Deterrence (and Apocalypse Now)—leaves us with the same cynical feeling, which eight years of Bush-Cheney instilled and nearly institutionalized:

o   Torture Inc. run by the U.S. government

o   Preventive/Selective Assassination /Anticipatory self-defense[or Pre-Emption]

o   The extremist/un-American Bush Doctrine of Pre-emption

o   Extra-Constitutional actions/spying on our own people/

o   Cabals within Cabals/illegal war—all justified and necessary to maintain the USA’s Superpower status—now & forever.

That, my friends, is exactly where Nuclear Imperialism fits into the Orthodox narrative of American Exceptionalism—so beloved by Sarah Palin and her Fundie/Christian Dominonists (NAR) and Christianist Tea Party pals. Their justification for American foreign military policy adventures and new Expeditions to Sicily, beyond 2013, part and parcel of Governor Romney and Senator Rubio’s Imperialistic Second American Century promises (2000-2100).

Recall the scene near the movie’s end when the urbane Cliff Robertson (Higgins) tries to explain to Condor (Robert Redford) and destroys Condor’s sense of righteousness of his cause: Yes, continue in your crusade. But when the American people are freezing in the dark, what do you think their response is? Well, I’ll tell you. They will want to know why the fuck the CIA didn’t take over those Mid-East oil fields when we had a chance.

Although the CIA agent (Higgins) didn’t mention the Peak Oil scenario, it hadn’t been invented in 1974 when Grady wrote Condor. But Halliburton’s Cheney knew all about the Peak Oil scenario. That’s what all those oil men who met with Cheney and were secretly planning for early in 2001: to help plot—or at least give the real rationale for the Iraqi War no. 2—with all their oil maps, charts of oil reserves, and geologists’ findings. They were determined to educate Cheney about the high oil stakes in play or rather to give the House of Bush (and Cheney’s corporate masters) a low-hanging fruit alternative for exercising a continually updated top-secret Pentagon contingency plan. That is, the seizing, in the name of the U.S. national security priorities, the House of Saud’s oil fields or introducing U.S. troops into Saudi Arabia to watch over them, guard them, and protect them. (Recall the great flap (still unresolved) caused by Richard Perle’s Defense Policy Board’s presentation by a mysterious (French) RAND expert to sketch just such a possibility early in the Bush administration? It was quickly given the George Orwell official memory-hole treatment. However, it was real. In fact, it was one of the hubris-afflicted Richard Perle’s negative incidents that forced Bush-Cheney to remove Perle as the head of the Pentagon’s—really Rumsfeld’s—Defense Policy Board (DPB).

No, instead they’d take over first Iraq’s world’s second greatest oil reserves and then agitate for another regime change in Iran-like CIA’s Kermit Roosevelt’s coup d’etat, which brought the Shah and his gorgeous wife back to power on Iran’s Peacock Throne in August 1953 with the related ouster of Iran’s Prime Minister M. Mosaddeg.

Note also the synchronicity of General Chiang and his exotic wife and the eventual lover of Wendell Willkie, Madam Soong Chiang Kai-shek, or Vietnam’s Air Force General Nguyen Thieu and his smashing, lithe wife in her matching blue and white Air Force uniform. What was/has been the real role of these exotic Asian beauties in America’s Asiatic adventures?

And don’t forget Madame Chennault’s covert, secret meddling with the North Vietnamese peace process at the direct request of President Nixon during the 1968 election, which may well have cost HHH a victory over Nixon? It’s a real scandal still waiting to be solved.

(And yes, you can expect some other dirty GOP trick in the coming presidential campaign—just short of an assassination attempt—later this fall. Think about the McCain-Schuenemann’s Hail Saint George pass when they conned Georgia’s President Saakashvili to attack the Russian protected enclave of Osettia in August 2008 just before Sarah Palin was sprung on the GOP and the world in early September. And but a mere two weeks before the fall of the House of Lehman which almost sank the entire world’s financial structure.)

The CIA Agent, Higgins, says to the idealistic Condor—confidently on his way to expose the rogue CIA oil cabal to the New York Times, You poor fool, what makes you think they’ll print it? (In fact, the New York Times did print Ellsberg’s Pentagon Papers and the Afghan Papers [26 July 2010].)

Welcome to the fear-ridden United States of America of 2011-2012. It’s also an object lesson for President Obama as he navigates the ship of state through the tricky reefs, shoals, and cataracts of highly partisan political-military policy in the midst now (summer 2013) of the fading Afghanistan War, and a changing, defeated al-Qaeda on the run at last from our drone attacks.

Thank heavens, God, and the Bird Nation for blogs, bloggers, and the Internet’s competition to corporate media. At least we have a chance, however small, to affect and change history. Why? The nuclear Iran and the enhanced Iraq, Iran, and Saudi oil and gas reserves regarding American national security policy issues are the same today (2011-2012) as in both films—Condor and Deterrence—though twenty-five years apart (1974, Ford, and 1999, Clinton).

What to do? Think please of my little sparrow on the road to Jerusalem when a protective Knights Templar came up to him and asked, What are you doing, little sparrow, lying on your back, by the side of the road, with your little spindly feet pointed up to the sky?

The little sparrow answered, I have heard the heavens are going to fall this afternoon.

Whoever is the source of the Afghan Papers, it sure as hell has changed history—probably for the better—as it defangs the future GOP cries of Who lost Afghanistan? It allows Obama to declare limited victory (2012-2014) and get the troopers the hell home—one decade of Central Asian nation building is more than enough when a century would hardly suffice.

And after eighty-three years, I have modified my little sparrow’s advice to us all, fighting the seemingly intractable historical forces and her evil enablers to wit:

Part IV (1970-79) with a special prequel of October 1969—Nixon and his use of B-52s for his madman nuclear ploy revived the dark shades or shadows of Fail-Safe/Red Alert/Dr. Strangelove; however, only Nixon’s nuclear alerts happened in history, not in fiction!

However, RMN—the President and CIC—was directing this nuclear brinksmanship—as a deeply disturbed, often drunken president—abetted by two nuclear high priests of Henry Kissinger/James Schlesinger—igniting another set of brushes with thermonuclear WW III[Like the summer of 1961/ Oct. 1962, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1974(Sept. 1, 1983]—which are exposed & stressed in Stalking the Antichrists.

Consider James Carroll’s take: When Schlesinger replaced Laird as Nixon’s secretary of defense in July 1973, joining Kissinger at the pinnacle of power, it was as if the priests of nuclear theology had finally been named its demigods (Carroll, p. 349). Hear, hear, hear!"

Special note on Deterrence and Deterrents in Part IV (1969-1976): Nixon, Kissinger, and Schlesinger’s attempt to find ways to use nuclear superiority to compel Russians and North Vietnamese to change their foreign policies to meet our demands (case no. 1) to overturn/dissolve the iron logic of Mutual Deterrence that McNamara finally arrived at in 1963/64 after we (Tom Ross, and I) defeated his RAND’S, Air Force’s, and Counterforce/ No-Cities Strategy (June 1962-April 1963). I also discussed this in the context of the Yom Kippur War (1973).

My case no. 2 in Part IV: Is James Schlesinger’s attempt to change McNamara’s Mutual Deterrence and no winners in a thermonuclear war—to—in his frightening congressional testimony under President Ford—of fighting & winning a thermonuclear war. This new Schlesinger doctrine (the only doctrine not named after a president!) of controlled thermonuclear wars little ones, without triggering the strategic, the big one, full-scale nuclear exchange—that is, our own Limited nuclear wars versus Total nuclear wars—under the umbrella of U.S. strategic superiority. It’s nuclear imperialism on steroids!

LeMay/Nitze/Wolfowitz/Perle/Schlesinger—carry on—or rather proselytize/prostitute the cardinal concept—one big idea of RAND Corporation [Schlesinger worked there too] Counterforce/No-Cities—but Nixon put a new wrinkle on it—Dan Ellsberg’s "madman thesis."

o   I first heard Ellsberg explain it during the Daedalus Conference. at Princeton [summer of 1960]. Kissinger proudly presented his protégé Ellsberg, who enlightened us [a cluster of Navy strategists], on duelling & the crazy Mad-man ploy.

Recall, Nixon and his secret nuclear alert of Oct 1969 and the Mid-East alert of 1973—General Haig, at the insistence of Kissinger/Schlesinger reportedly kept Nixon drunk’’ and out of the decision loop for fear of a rogue order" from Nixon that might have triggered World War III. (Schlesinger, in the Watergate summer of 1974, gave another such command: all Nixon’s orders to the Pentagon military leaders must go through Secretary of Defense Schlesinger to head off a war/coup by an increasingly desperate President Nixon.)

Our new un-official Navy Kabal of 1969 soon realized that Nixon would never adopt our full Littoral/Rim Lands Oceanic Strategy. Why? Too much a traditional Blue Water Strategy and not sexy enough for for Nixon-Kissinger. Instead, Nixon used nuclear alerts.

His real secret plan to end the Vietnam War with honor versus the USSR was to try to force North Vietnam to negotiate by his ‘‘Madman Ploy. However, as with LBJ’s Rolling Thunder, the North Vietnamese just didn’t listen or read our signals; they had only read their own history and knew their own culture and thus had little inclination to understand or apply von Neumann’s, Kahn’s, and RAND’s bizzare Game theory" in a struggle for their nation’s future.

In fact, Nixon’s other secret war plan was simple: bomb the hell out of the North Vietnamese, especially with the famous carpet bombing by the B-52s based at first in Guam and then moved to Thailand—one hellava long way from Le May’s/SAC’s glory days as the United States’ and Western Civilization’s prime nuclear deterrent, foreshadowing the end of SAC in the 1990s. (General Butler did it!)

LeMay went to his death bed convinced that his B-52s—once unleashed to go north—could have won both the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. How? By the vaporization by his SAC’s 2,200 megatons of nuclear explosives on Cuba, Russia, China, and all of World Communism.

Yes, indeed, a Total Victory with "acceptable" American civilian losses—much less than the twenty mega-deaths of General Buck Turgidson (LeMay) calculations by the RAND (BLAND) Corporation, which, after all, he (LeMay) created and orginally funded in the late 1940s.

My case no. 3: MIRV and the 20,000 MIRV megaton warheads (approximately) each of the United Sates and USSR (MIRV revolution of 1970-75). Once again, RAND, other nuclear strategists, and Wizards of Armageddon were encouraged to try to find or devise a political and diplomatic use for U.S. nuclear superority, which equalled in my mind to Nuclear Imperialism reborn. Schlesinger was fired by President Ford and replaced by a more ambitious SECDEF, Don Rumsfeld, who would apply his lessons, theory, and sayings, along with his buddy in power Dick Cheney during their imperial reign of George W. Bush’s Amerika (2001-2006).

After they were ignored and exiled by the first President Bush (‘41) in the early 1990s, Rumsfeld and Cheney were determined to create a new Grand Strategy and the necessary accompanying military forces (GP no. 4) to overcome their embarrassing total defeat of the United States in the Second Vietnamese War of 1965-1975.

It ended—after all on the watch of a Republican President Gerald Ford—on April 30, 1975, with the final evacuation by choppers from the American embassy in Saigon. The wars of Iraq and Afghanistan are two monuments from "their March of Folly’’ in Western/Central Asia (2001-2012/2014[?]).
