Number 5: Charlotte Dury Lowe’s letter of September 7th 1954 to her parents about married life at Honey Buckets Heights on a hill overlooking NAS Atsugi, Japan. It reveals the fact that the U.S. Army was still censoring dependents mail—after the U.S. Occupation of Japan ended on July 4, 1954. The censors deleted a discussion of Charlotte’s observations of nation-wide Japanese demonstrations, including one at NAS Atsugi, against the H-bomb tests of March 1, 1954. It created radioactive coral that showered on the Japanese tuna boat, The Fortunate Dragon Maru. The fallout killed one crewman and sickened the rest of the crew & made all the tuna radioactive. Yet Still the Bulbul Sings: My Stalking of the Antichrists and Their False Nuclear Prophets, Nuclear Gladiators, and Spirit Warriors (1940-2012)—a Foreshadowing of Armageddon, World War III/Megawar.

I owe the overarching inspiration and sacred insight for these books to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s penetrating observation.

Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.

One controlling key insight by President John F. Kennedy was in response to a reporter’s question: A number of your right-wing critics say your foreign policy is based on a no-win policy in the Cold War.

Now if someone thinks we should have a nuclear war in order to win, I can inform them that there will be no winners in the next war, if there is one, and this country would suffer very heavy blows. So we have to proceed with responsibility and with care in an age where the human race can obliterate itself. (News conference No 24 (February 14, 1962), John F. Kennedy Library)

Three great insights by Winston Churchill right after President Harry Truman informed him about the Trinity Test and his Farewell Speech to the Commons (1955) are given below:

How to deter a thermonuclear Armageddon and World War III (the fire next time) and the resultant end of history/Gaia/Nature, and God’s Creation? Yet still the bulbul sings: my stalking the Antichrists and their false nuclear prophets/nuclear gladiators/spirit warriors—1952-2012—2033. Will the end of the Mayan calendar and/or the mass Fundamentalist Christianist neurosis lead to Armageddon-World War III? (See Colleen McCullough’s A Creed for the Third Millennium: Joshua Christian (Jesus?) freezing/crucified again in Connecticut yet as the Mexican masses invade their former/stolen land (before 1848) in the American S.W.!) Too late then for repeal of the 14th Amendment as the former, anchor babies/terrorist babies begin their nefarious missions of terror/sabotage and rejection of Jesus-inspired Beatitudes-Sermon On The Mount Ministry (Matt. 5: 3-12) during 2030-2033!

When does the twenty-first century really begin? September 11, 2001? January 20, 2009? Election of 2012 or December 21, 2012? Did the nineteenth century end with the Titanic (1912) or with the Guns of August (1914)? (Will both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries end in December 2012?) If not, will the circumstances/fear and end of time/the end time neurosis, unleashed by end of The Maya Calendar and the hatred generated by the presidential election of 2012, early in the term of Romney-Ryan (or a right-wing Fundamentalist [Fundie] equivalent), cause an American Civil War No 2 and/or Armageddon World War III by automatic triggering of the thermonuclear Doomsday Machines of the super powers?

Hence the rationale/purpose/mission of Stalking the Antichrists (formerly The Bulbul and the Antichrists) and my Daimon’s role to help me choose the correct fork/path/way of destiny for my life’s future decisions in the unknown allotted time ahead—until the Southern or Northern Barred Owl (Strix varia) calls my name. Foreshadowing of Things Yet to Come

This overview was inspired by re-reading of On The Beach and the sadness/inevitability of the end of ordinary life of ordinary people as the deadly radioactive cobalt fallout shroud of World War III (Armageddon) approaches Southern Australia and the death of all human life by running out at both ends of the diminishing human race—Homo Stupido! Until that happens, one takes that suicide pill in the little red bottle or dies a painful death madly looking for a head/john/loo/one holler/bucket/bush…

Vera Lynn’s haunting old World War II sentimental ballad We’ll Meet Again still says it all, conjuring up as it always will the failure of deterrence in Red Alert, Dr. Strangelove, Fail-Safe, A Canticle for Leibowitz, Alas, Babylon, On the Beach, and Deterrence—the Rod Lurie movie. (1999) (H-bomb on Baghdad from the President’s Armageddon football stuck in an Iowa diner during an unexpected snowstorm).

We’ll meet again

Just like you always do

Till the blue skies chase the dark

Clouds all away

And that’s the way, the world—and "Dr. Strangelove as we know it—ends with a bang, not a sexless whimper" (as in On The Beach). Waving his Texas cowboy hat, an ideological War Lover (as in Teddy Roosevelt’s cabal in The War Lovers by Evan Thomas-(2010)), Major T. J. King Kong ecstatically rides a 15,000,000 ton-equivalent H-bomb (not coated yet with cobalt) targeted on a Soviet operational ICBM site (See Red Alert, pp. 182-183 (1958). The professional Alabama Angel crew of the 843rd B-52 Wing, operating under the direct orders of a mad, crazed, rogue SAC Bomber General Quinten, within a pre-emptive/preventive war system (1945-2012), implemented a grand strategy of Project Control.

This pre-emptive/first-strike strategy and spasm war plan was personally devised and created by RAND/Air Force as LeMay’s very own nuclear war-winning strategy in the late 1940s to use nuclear weapons systems (first the A-bombs and eventually H-bombs delivered by long-range bombers and after 1958 also by ICBMs/SLBMs) to fight and win the world for the national interests (military, economic, cultural, religious) of the USA’s largely invisible empire).

It was based on the military philosophy of Air Force officers—the bomber generals of SAC and their Military Industrial Complex (MIC) allies made mad (like St. John of Patmos) by their association with civilization-destroying nuclear weapons. That was the dominant strategic orthodoxy, at least through 1961-63 and effectively in the saddle as late as 2001-2008.

With the advent of the Single Integrated Operational Plan (SIOP), 1960-61), the Navy-revealed a top secret discovery relating to SAC’s targeting policy from 1948 to 1961. (I had custody as Assistant Air Navigation Officer, NAS Atsugi, Japan (1956-57), of huge blue NIE global targeting volumes and the means to duplicate them (enormous stinking ammonia (Ozlaid) copy machines) for the entire Pacific Fleet to use in case the balloon went up and World War III or the Megawar began!)

The Air Force Utopian-dominated five-year Pentagon planning documents and related and supporting NIEs never fully took into account the fallout, fire and blast effect—only the size of the crater blasted and vaporized and thus created by the new H-bombs (after 1954)!

Why? Why? Why? Consider the political-military-historic implications of the resultant overkill: RAND, SAC, Air Force, Fortune (C.J.V. Murphy) and Dem-GOP politics (fear of the right-wing reaction).

Ike’s Military Industrial Complex grew fat and flourished by the RAND, and the think-tank created and accepted strategic nuclear war irrational memes: massive retaliation/, counterforce, no cities, overkill, damage limitation, the sacred strategic triad (fixed, land-based bombers and ICBMS and ocean-submarine-based SLBMs), Bomber and Missile gaps. It purposely exaggerated Soviet ICBM production (estimates) of those 1980s (CIA’s Gates’ team of analysts justified RWR’s—$1.9 trillion arms race with ourselves), the perpetuation of the Cold War for a generation, the rise of the yellow peril of Red China/window of opportunity and megatonage gap/peak oil/heady thoughts of a new empire of oil/global defeat of tyranny/evil and spread of WSJ/Fox capitalism and democracy—and pre-emptive wars/preventive wars vs. The Great New Islamic Threat—at the core of $500-$700 plus billion DOD Budgets vs. the neo-/theo-con/Cheney/Beck—imagined Second Caliphate of a newly militant Islam in a Great "War of Civilizations." (Samuel Huntington’s racial biases were revealed.)

This amounts to the last Christian crusade led by our new Peter the Hermit (Newt G.): President George W. Bush’s crusade of September 16, 2001 just after his National Cathedral speech (September 15, 2001) promised to seek and destroy evil on the earth and eventually (see also W’s Second Inaugural Address) vowed to destroy tyranny and evil and spread Wilsonian democracy to the ends of the earth. (W was channeling Woodrow Wilson’s delusions as was Ronald Wilson Reagan.) This is a sure-fire Utopian blueprint for an endless series of New Asian Wars—direct from George Orwell’s play book 1984, Oceania always at war with East Asia!

Presidents, Congress, and the American people never knew and still don’t understand the implications (for traditional American civilian control of the military) of that Polaris—caused revelation and discovery. Moreover, the skewered SAC targeting assumptions, which triggered tens of thousands of new nuclear-weapon targets to crater, led to increases in Boeing B-52 productions (sixteen to twenty per month) in the late 1950s—aided by the Democratic Party’s Bomber Gap Hoax and the construction of over thirty thousand or even ninety thousand nukes.

Paul Nitze and Senator Jackson (from Boeing), Symington (original and first Secretary of U.S. Air Force), LBJ (Senate majority leader and supporter of Texas Aircraft plant bases), and the Democratic Party passed anti-Ike’s Congressional hearings on the bogus Bomber gap (new and inflated numbers of Soviet Bisons (jets) and Bears (turbo-props), plus tens of thousands of new H-bombs for their new bombers and ICBMs (to overcome the bogus Missile gap), plus the requirement for thousands of miniaturized H-bombs to fit into the new MIRVed H-bomb warheads of LBJ’s key decision. That mad/crazy decision resulted in the building of over thirty-one thousand nuclear weapons by the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s.) (Those of us who raised the issue: How much is enough? or overkill were considered slightly unpatriotic or even pro-Communist by the orthodox guardians of strategic nuclear doctrine and arsenal.)

Despite all the Pentagon denials, it has been since 1945 a first-strike doctrine (either preventive or pre-emptive war)—1945-2012 has been one big nuclear orgasmic spasm thanks to the twentieth century foreign policy-diplomatic white elite (best and brightest) and their aggressive deterrent-deterrence doctrine of the false nuclear prophets and magi-high priests of using cheap nuclear fusion weapons and the presidents they advised and served from 1952 to 2012.

With the bogus Bomber gap of 1954-1958 (based on Nitze-inspired Gaither reports and two gay writers—Joe Alsop’s hyper-exaggerations and Fortune’s C.J.V. Murphy and his buddy Stu Symington’s leaked U.S. Intel/NIE’s), the Soviet threat of the mid-late 1950s ended in our permanent favor the pre-emptive warriors, after the Soviet Sputnik of October 4, 1957 (and the U-2 operational flights from NAS Atsugi beginning in early 1957): The MIC (Liberal and Conservative Utopians, defense contractors, and media allies (Air Force Association)) Nitze and (University of Chicago/RAND Professor Wohlstetter, Foreign Affairs, January 1959) created the twin doctrines of the Bomber and Missile gaps (JFK’s and Nitze’s) in the 1960 presidential campaign and U. C. Professor Albert Wohlstetter’s January 1959 "Foreign Policy Intel-based article, The Delicate Balance of Terror. It resulted in the Wohlstetter-recommended SAC airborne alerts—circling around like silvery vultures of nuclear death on their fifteen-minute warning" time, for the Soviet I.C.B.M.’s first strike (Red Alert’s obsolete punctuation of ICBM) from launch to hitting SAC’s vulnerable bomber bases. (We did not have an operational ICBM when Red Alert was published in 1958, but did have a massive superiority by 1962, while the USSR had only a few (four to six or perhaps thirty SS-12s) (One Minute to Midnight, Michael Dobbs, 2008, p. 190) of operational MRBMs, highly vulnerable to a U.S. first strike (the actual U.S. war plan that JFK rejected during the Berlin (summer/fall of 1961) and during the related Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962). (According to Earl Morris’s McNamara in Context (New York Times, July 7, 2009), when Mr. McNamara took office he discovered secret Pentagon plans for a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the Soviet Union.)

A History Ending Question: Was that the secret Pentagon plan of Air Force Joint Chief General Curt LeMay’s personal war plan/strategy for a first strike? It seems surprisingly similar to the nuclear first-strike pre-emptive war, that LeMay recommended JFK launch during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.

Let’s consider what James Carroll wrote about that issue of American ICBM/bomber/SLBM strategic nuclear superiority on the cusp of World War III in his superb House of War:

Edge of the abyss. (Carroll, p. 278)

Together, Berlin and Cuba—in not having led to war—mark a great turning point. (Carroll, p. 278)

The Cuban Missile Crisis resulted from the Soviet Union’s perception [very true in fact]—that the United States had the ability to deliver a first-strike knockout blow. Because missiles in Cuba would counter that, they were put there to protect the very survival of the USSR. (And that’s my position/theory also—and I’m sticking to it!) We now know that in 1962 the Soviet ICBM force consisting of about thirty launchers, was one tenth the size of the American force.

The great intelligence success, that the DIA discovered the Soviet deployment before it became operational, went hand in hand with a monumental intelligence failure, that Washington did not anticipate the Soviet reaction to its strategic disadvantage. (Carroll, pp. 278-79)

How in God’s good name was it possible that I understood it clearly and acted—with Tom Ross help—to force McNamara and JFK to scuttle their Counterforce/No-Cities strategy? (Chicago Sun Times, June 1962 to January 1963)

Not to put too fine a point on Carroll’s accurate summary of Khrushchev’s greatest gamble to save the Motherland by secretly introducing his MRBMs into Cuba, in order to deter an American first pre-emptive strike by General LeMay’s SAC, I’ll just say this: Why was it "that Washington did not anticipate the Soviet reaction to its strategic disadvantage?" When I did I tried to alert the press and JFK but lost my nerve. (See How I Lived in History—1962—in Washington and Paris part III)

McNamara worried that the Joint Chiefs wanted nuclear war, and he was determined not to allow that to happen. From 1961 to about 1976, we had first-strike capacity and a vast nuclear superiority against the Soviet Union. (In the immortal words of George C. Scott (General Buck Turgidson LeMay) from Dr. Strangelove—I’m not saying we wouldn’t get our hair mussed! But we would have destroyed them.) After Kennedy’s death, McNamara served the central role of keeping the Joint Chiefs in check. If true, he became not the villain of American history, but something quite different. This was according to James Carroll’s searing analysis of General LeMay’s baleful true strategy of striking first—no matter what his civilian masters’ strategic policy actually was.

I’m convinced that James Carroll’s analysis is absolutely correct: General LeMay was even more powerful in the Washington DC corridors of power than was Herbert Hoover, who after all only guarded the FBI’s sex files, whereas General LeMay controlled over two thousand megatons of flying thermonuclear death for hundreds of millions—if not billions—of God’s creatures and critters.

However, both the USSR and USA had many operational ICBMs/MRBMs—fixed land and mobile oceanic-based—when the movie Dr. Strangelove was released in 1964. And within a year (1965), both the USA and USSR had ensured that their great nuclear deterrents were invulnerable to a first-pre-emptive strike. The era and the Age of (True) Deterrence, foreseen by Winston Churchill in 1955, Rabinowitch in 1956, Lowe in 1957, had dawned thanks to mutual deterrence, a function of the second-strike invulnerable deterrents. First pioneered by the Polaris. The two SSBNs, in the winter of 1960-61 the USS George Washington and the USS Patrick Henry went on station with thirty-two Polaris SLBMs (MRBMs) just as President Ike was warning, in his famous Farewell Address of January 17, 1961, about the unwarranted influence of the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) and dangers of the scientific-technological elite (RAND/Nitze’s Gaither Committee, etc.). They had hounded Ike in his second term with the bogus Bomber/Missile gaps of 1955-1961!

(Twenty years later the same cabal (Nitze and Liberal and Conservative (ex-Democratic neo-con) Utopians) that devised the bogus Bomber/Missile gaps created a Window of Vulnerability gap, which President Reagan swallowed hook, line, and sinker. In fact, RWR used that bogus Window gap to justify his strategic defense initiative (SDI) and his stinking $1.9 trillion arms race against bogus/inflated numbers of Soviet ICBMs, created by Secretary Gates’ CIA estimate’s team in the 1980s.)

The end of the Soviet Empire and World Communism (1989-91) ought to have ushered in a New Era (glimpsed by President G.H.W. Bush’s short-lived New World Order), but it didn’t. Why? Because of the imperial pretensions (1990-91 and 2001-2012) of the last superpower’s empire, now in slow decline thanks to America’s near bankruptcy caused by imperial over-reach, endless U.S. expeditions to Sicily, Eastern/Western/Central Asia (1950-2009), or perhaps way back to TR’s elite white Anglo-Saxon, war lovers cabal of 1898. (Note that in 2009-2012, the rise of the once discredited Aryan whiteness crept back into the national debate/dialogue: Rachel Maddow (RM) vs. Pat the White-volk built America Buchanan (PB) of July 16, on MSNBC/TPM.)

Well, I think, said PB to RM, white men were 100 percent of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100 percent of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100 percent of people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Probably close to 100 percent of the people who died at Normandy.

This has been a country built basically by white folks in this country who were 90 percent of the entire nation, when I was growing up, Rachel—and the other 10 percent were African American who had been discriminated against. One of my key reasons for writing The Stalking of the Antichrists (The Bulbul and the Antichrists) is to attempt to answer the question that HST asked when he signed off on the H-bomb/Super in January 1950: What took you so long? Yes, what also took the USA so long to reap the harvest and the promise of Polaris (second strike) and the peace of Mutual Deterrence of 1965? And that was forty-seven years and many trillions of DOD dollars ago!

It is often forgotten that the opposite side of the Mutual Deterrence coin is disarmament and the long-term objective is one of complete rejection of nuclear weapons—nuclear disarmament. (HHH didn’t live in vain!) My friend Jerry Spingarn was a New Deal lawyer friend of HHH, and Humphrey placed Jerry as a political appointee in the Pentagon to keep a watch on the traditional elite arms controllers (Halberstam’s the best and the brightest), and Jerry helped keep HHH’s vision of disarmament alive in the new JFK administration of 1961. Furthermore, Jerry encouraged me to blow the whistle, which almost prevented the Cuban Missile Crisis of mid-October 1962, but eventually assisted in bringing about the Peace of Deterrence—without a thermonuclear World War III. However, it was a close encounter with thermonuclear fire balls racing through the villages and towns of the USSR and the USA in late October 1962.

Overview No. 2

Some useful definitions for understanding Deterrents and Deterrents in The Age of "True" Deterrence-1965-2012 are given below.

First is an important set of definitions at the core of strategic nuclear weapons with thanks to Robert McNamara’s Blundering into Disaster.

A.   First strike: Used in the text to refer to what is sometimes called a ‘disarming first strike:’ a large nuclear attack intended to destroy the retaliatory forces of the opponent, leaving forces insufficient to inflict substantial damage on the attacker (McNamara, Blundering into Disaster, p. 176).

B.   Second strike: A retaliatory nuclear attack in response to a strategic nuclear strike by the adversary (McNamara, Blundering into Disaster, p. 178).

C.   First use: The initial use of nuclear weapons of any size and against any target by either party to a conflict (McNamara, Blundering into Disaster, p. 176).

D.   Second use: The responsive use of nuclear weapons by one side following first use of such weapons by the other side. Compare follow-on use (McNamara, Blundering into Disaster, p. 178).

E.   Pre-emptive strike: A strike launched in anticipation of an opponent’s (immediate) nuclear strike (McNamara, Blundering into Disaster, p. 178).

F.   Preventive war/preventative: A war launched by a first strike against an adversary who will thus be prevented from being able to launch a first strike against you sometime in the future (often purposely/officially confused/conflated by various American administrations with pre-emptive war. For example, the Bush Administration on March 19, 2003, launched what it called a pre-emptive war because of Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). However, since there were no WMDs (and the Bush administration knew it) the Bush war of choice of March 19, 2003, was in reality a preventive war to prevent Saddam Hussein from launching an WMD (Nuke) vs. U.S. forces/interests sometime in the future, if and when Saddam Hussein ever developed a delivery vehicle for his yet to build—necessary nuclear warheads! (This same reasoning will apply for any future Iran’s nuclear deterrent (and her A-bomb/delivery vehicle.)

G.   The Doomsday Machine: It was built as the "ultimate deterrent" by the USSR in response to the Soviet fears of a U.S. pre-emptive first strike by the nuclear war Crazies of the Reagan administration: 1981-1984. These warmongers were re-enforced by the very angry RWR rhetoric focus of evil, Evil Empire and his actions like the selection of five thousand de-capitation targets for the SIOP, RWR’s joke of get ready to bomb Russia in ten minutes, plus $4.2 billion for Civil Defense and billions more for SDI (Star Wars) and an overall $1.9 trillion arms race with the Kremlin. (See the detailed discussion of the Doomsday Machine—Perimeter/Dead Hand in David E. Hoffman’s The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy, pp. 143-154 (2009), and in Part V of Stalking the Antichrists (also in vol. no. 1).

Please allow me to stress again this great nuclear truth:

To have a credible deterrent, a nation needs two vital components: the nuclear warheads and the bombers/missiles to deliver those warheads to their intended targets. Then and only then does the deterrent effect become operational.

H.   Pre-emptive war: A war launched by a first strike against an opponent who is about to strike your nuclear forces in a disarming bolt from the blue and a nuclear Pearl Harbor. This doctrine of pre-emption was adopted by the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1950s for the specific reason that President Ike didn’t like the bellicose members of his administration, Admirals Radford and Carney and Secretary Dulles, discussing and advocating preventive war against the USSR. The analogy often used is that of two Western gunfighters about to challenge each other/shoot it out at high noon. The white-hated, white American gunfighter (Gary Cooper) simply draws faster than the black-hated dusky gunslinger (Jack Palance): the USA as the lone good sheriff at high noon versus saving the town from the evil Communist outlaws and the indifferent populace.

During the Bush administrations (2001-2009), they purposely applied the principle of conflation (meshing/merging) to confuse the American people on many key national security issues: preventive war and pre-emptive war; Saddam Hussein confused with Osama Bin Laden (OBL) responsible for September 11, 2001; M. Atta meets Iraqi intel agent in Prague when Atta was really in Miami; OBL agents/terrorists trained in Iraq when there was an anti-Saddam force in Northern Iraq. However, the Bush administration purposely mixed both groups in summer 2002-spring /2003 PR campaign when WMDs were also confused—Nuke/Bio/Chem. to cloud the issue and find a war justification ("anyone" would do in order to carry out an invasion of Iraq as planned) even before the Bush administration took power on January 20, 2001—and were thus able to justify the preventive war of choice against Iraq on March 19, 2003.

Likewise, possibly the black bag anthrax letters would have been used to justify an attack on Iraq, except the spore dispersal agent was American and not the one used by Saddam’s bio-warriors. Ambassador Joe Wilson was supposedly the bad guy with Niger yellowcake (uranium ore), when in reality Cheney was after Valery Plame, Wilson’s CIA wife, and her role in Iran’s nuke program—not Saddam Hussein’s nonexistent nuke program. Such were the uses of conflation by the Bush administration in the run-up to Bush’s Preventive War of Aggressive Choice (March 19, 2003).

Overview No. 3

The Obama—Medvedev negotiation/agreement (July 6, 2009) to reduce the number of strategic nuclear warheads to each under 1700 was a significant step toward eventual nuclear disarmament. (When START-1 went into effect (1995), the Russian warheads dropped from 20,000 to 10,000 and U.S. warheads decreased from 20,000 to 10,000.) (See Hal Lindsey’s informed tirade in The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon vs. (1980) Salt Talks and Fred Kaplan’s No More Nukes? in Time, September 27, 2010, pp. 34-39.)

This new START strategic/warheads Treaty was awaiting Senate ratification after the 2010 off-year elections. I predict that Obama’s successful submission of this START Treaty to the Senate and its ratification will trigger a decade-long great debate—including the two Presidential elections of 2012 and 2016.

Why? Given the neo-cons/theo-cons/warmongers/war lovers ideological pre-dispositions to go abroad in search of monsters to destroy’ (John Q. Adam’s observation, quoted in George F. Kennan’s Cold War, Louis Menard, New Yorker, November 14, 2011, p. 83) and to expand the American empire in an attempt to create a new American twenty-first century. (Senator Marco Rubio’s maiden Senate speech of June 14, 2011) And they already have these great threats in their CEPs/bomb sights/target lists and inflated DOD budgets: red China, black Russia, and green Islamofascism of Glen Beck’s/Veep Cheney’s fanciful newly revived Caliphate.

Indeed, what better way to reduce unemployment than a new arms race (in space too) in 2013-2020? It was a tactic that worked beautifully for Ronald Wilson Reagan: 1981-84, as well of course for FDR (1939-45) and HST (1950-53). (Note David Broder’s odd and strange discussion and recommendation regarding a new Asian war with Iran to solve the American unemployment problem (November 5, 2011).

My answer for this imperial itch—which I explain at length—is the same as Ike’s of January 17, 1961: the influence in both the USA/USSR-Russia of the MI (CR) C and the related scientific technological elites. (RAND/think-tanks)

1.   Despite all the MIC propaganda, aided by Democratic/Republican politicians, to the contrary, from 1945 to 2009, the USA triggered the great nuclear arms race (A- and H-bombs for bombers/ICBM missiles (fixed-based) and SLBMs (mobile/hidden) plus the related MIRVed technology), and the seven to eight trillion-dollar investment resulted in a greatly superior American strategic nuclear forces throughout the nuclear age—these last sixty-seven years. (See McNamara’s revealing chart on who initiated/accelerated/fueled the great nuclear arms race of 1945-1991 (McNamara, II: The Technology Race, Blundering into Disaster, p. 151.)) And it was this real American superiority which allowed/tempted the USA to engage in nuclear imperialism. (The war on terror to date has cost more than World War II—eventually $3-4 trillion (Stigletz-Brown University Study). McNamara’s Technology Race Chart 11 revealed that the Soviets had only beaten the USA once in the great nuclear arms race in 1945-1986 (the ICBM of August 27, 1957), when in fact the Soviets were the first to develop a droppable H-bomb in 1953, followed by the American H-bomb test of March 1, 1954.

2.   Armed with this permanent nuclear superiority, there developed in post-World War II America a grand strategic consensus to use this massive American lead in the ultimate (nuclear) weapons in the following ways:

A.   Coercive/compelling diplomacy—using the threat of nukes to force/compel/advance/supplement traditional American diplomacy and to preserve our national interests globally.

B.   Aggressive uses of the American military power—"world’s policeman for advancing democracy/capitalism/Judeo-Christian religion, and freedom/liberty" (local/limited wars, police actions, CIA interventions, humanitarian purposes, confronting Khrushchev’s wars of National Liberation (1961), for example, all throughout the Caribbean by the U.S. Marine Corps—the protector of Wall Street interests/investments—in the 1920s and early 1930s).

C.   Maintaining the USA as a superpower/dominant world power—note the global base structure to support a forward/internationalist/interventionist grand strategy and maintain the world’s strongest Navy to ensure freedom of the seas and to protect the vital choke points of international trade and commerce.

D.   The creation of a virtual Empire—raw materials/markets/trade/investments (The W.A. Williams thesis Contours of History and The Tragedy of American Diplomacy and the highest standard of living in the world as a function/result of our Empire)!

E.   Advancing and expanding American Exceptionalism/global Manifest Destiny/the American dream and way Fundamentalist Christianity—via nuclear imperialism, overt/covert (with all the confidence of a Christian poker player, holding all four aces).

Introduction (A)

The singing hiyodori, Japanese Bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis), symbolizes a reborn Japan, recovering from the Great Pacific War, an island in the Pacific Lake conquered by the U.S. Navy in World War II. When I first heard (October, 1956) the Bulbul’s hee-yo hee-yo song at a nearby Ebina-machi garden, the Occupation was over. The emperor-General Douglas MacArthur had thankfully faded away. There was a U.S.-Red China truce in the Korean War. Hiroshima and Nagasaki had also risen from their nuclear ashes (estimated 200,000 dead). Tokyo, Yokohama, etc. had been rebuilt (one million civilians dead) from the Bomber Harris—like LeMay-McNamara B-29 created Tokyo fire storms of March 9-10, 1945 (100,000 dead) and most other Japanese cities (1,000,000 deaths estimated); the USA and USSR had successfully tested the Super or H-bomb (1952-1955). The Soviet Satellite Sputnik was only a year away, and intercontinental ballistic missiles were under development by the USA/USSR, which in another two decades would largely replace the heavy jet bombers (B-52s) as the main delivery vehicles of the American and Soviet Great Nuclear Deterrents.

And in little over a decade, the Americans and Russians having stared into the horrific nuclear abyss during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 made a command decision to make their Great Deterrent weapon systems invulnerable to an adversary’s disarming bolt from the blue/first strike/pre-emptive first strike. Thus, by the mid and late 1960s—a decade after I first heard the migrating Bulbul/hiyodori—the two superpowers, the USA and USSR, reluctantly accepted the new orthodoxy of the nuclear age.

"The Age of Mutual (True) Deterrence with its implications of civilian arms control/reductions versus MAD" (Mutual Assured Destruction) with its military implications of preventive/pre-emptive war. (MAD was the brainchild of Dr. Donald Brennan/Herman Kahn’s Hudson Institute (Rockefeller funded), transmuted by RWR’s (Richard Perle’s) false nuclear prophets (Colin S. Gray, Frank Gaffney, John Bolton, etc.) into Mutual Assured Survival and the possibilities of a total victory in World War III by RWR’S SDI-Star Wars/CD (from the 1960s decade to the 1980s decade) had dawned.

Slowly, ever so slowly, both superpowers agreed to a self-denying ordinance, and they finally embraced the great truth foreshadowed by the mushroom clouds formed over Hiroshima/Nagasaki and the Pacific atolls, vaporized by an unexpectedly powerful 15,000,000 ton TNT-equivalent explosive (March 1954)—sufficient to take out any city in the world. Thus, for the most part, responsible leaders on both sides of the Iron Curtain accepted the great nuclear truth: that since there will be no winners in a nuclear war, only survivors who may well envy the dead, they must never be fought.

(Indeed, see pages (516-547) for the strategic implications of the Soviet-Russian Doomsday Machine—"the Ultimate Deterrent" which went operational on New Year’s Day in 1985.) As—the Senate debate over the new START Treaty began on December 15, 2010), there were still many Utopians (Doug Feith, Governor Rick Perry’s political-military adviser) on Hardball (December 14, 2010) of the Hudson Institute, which is typical of many right-wingers, neo-cons, and theo-cons who still deny the nuclear truth, the unlimited power of the H-devices, the Russian Doomsday Machine, and challenge Obama’s belief in their imperial view of American Exceptionalism.

It’s an expansive concept that is rooted in our past nuclear superiority (1945-2003): Nuclear Imperialism redux/Pax Americana/our benign Empire uber alles—the Rumsfeld—Cheney—Bush GP no. 4, and ultimately the capacity to fight and win thermonuclear wars/limited wars/insurgencies, and Armageddon too (2001-2008).

And it’s applicable, as befitting their revived Great Hegemon of the Western World in new Twenty-first American century—of neo-cons/theo-cons/Christian Dominonists/Tea Partyites (Governor Romney/Senators Rubio, McCain, Lieberman/Graham’s Greater Americanites, rogue generals, and opportunistic warmongering defense intellectuals,, and former revanchist Bushites.

The long-term implications of that great nuclear truth are implicit in the mutual existence of invulnerable second-strike Great Deterrents and the Soviet-Russian operational Doomsday Machine on January 1, 1985 (See David E. Hoffman’s description of the Soviet’s Doomsday Machine in Dead Hand, pp. 146-154, 2009).

This mutual understanding between the superpowers meant that the deterrence function of thermonuclear weapons had prevailed over the temporarily defeated warmongering faction which fanatically (ideological right-wing) believed that American superior nuclear/strategic forces ought to be used to advance American global/strategic objectives (a brand spanking-new American Twenty-first century). If that means fighting and winning a thermonuclear World War III—so be it!

In the dangerous decades ahead, we can expect to have to fight again this sixty-seven-year-old battle over the uses/abuses of nuclear weapons between the Utopians and Traditionalists: to deter World War III or to fight and win thermonuclear World War III-Armageddon.

Hence the theme of this book—and my mission: how I have stalked (and fought) the Antichrists and defeated their false nuclear prophets/nuclear gladiators and spirit warriors in the last sixty years, 1952-2012 (December 21, 2012), or the end of the Mayan calendar aided by my Daimon and my Jack Russell familiar, Baby Chidda.

As a perfect and scary example from one of my Antichrists of the 2001-10 decade, Vice President Cheney, in an interview with Fox News Sunday, answered a Nixonian belief/assertion (see decade 1970-80): "Well, when the president does it, that means it is not illegal." (Secret bombing of Cambodia? The B-52 raids on Hanoi in Christmas 1972? HST’s B-29 attacks on North Korean cities/dams in 1950-52?)

Chris Wallace pressed Cheney and asked him, If the president, during the war, decides to do something to protect the country, is it legal?

The vice president’s response was obfuscating, but the same in essence as Nixon’s (Joe Conason, What Nixon admitted and Cheney won’t, Stuart News, January 1, 2009):

In general proposition, I’d say yes, he began, and then went on to claim that the president can launch a nuclear strike without consulting Congress (a pre-emptive/preventive strike against Iran or a nuke strike against Russia to save the new NATO members or our BMD sites in Georgia/Poland/Czech).

Cheney defended his "unitary, neo-dictatorial, divine right" of kings (monarch) power (above the law) of the Bush presidency (2001-2009) rooted in the alleged powers of a C-I-Chief of a war-time presidency by the precedence of two presidential decisions: Lincoln’s in Civil War (cancellation of habeas corpus) and FDR’s in World War II (Japanese-American citizens into concentration camps).

Cheney described to Fox News the post September 11, 2001 White House/Bush presidency:

We find ourselves in a situation where I believe you need strong executive leadership. What we (stet/sic) in this administration is to exert that kind of authority…

"If you think about what Abraham Lincoln did during the Civil War (total war), what FDR did during World War II (total war), they went far beyond anything we’ve done in a global war on terror [Definitely not a total war, except for what it cost in dollars—not lives]."

But we have exercised, I think, the legitimate authority of the president under Article II of the Constitution as commander in chief in order to put in place policies and programs that have successfully defended the nation. (Joe Conason, January 1, 2009, Stuart News (Scripps))

And on January 2, 2009 I saw a nearly perfect cartoon,(Jimmy Margulies, The Record, Hackensack, New Jersey) nearly a synchronicity, which reveals my deepest fears and prejudices against our worst Veep in history (12 percent approval ratings as of January 19, 2009, compared to Bush’s 22 percent tonight eleven hours before our long nightmare years end). Where pray tell is the president’s Armageddon football tonight?

Frame No 1: An evil satanic-looking Cheney predicts, I believe history will be kind to our administration.

Frame No 2: The evil one/Antichrist says, Won’t you? Cheney gleefully pours a bucket of water down "history" . . . (male) bearded throat—strapped, blindfolded to a waterboard—who screams, Yes! Yes! Yes!

Ironically and paradoxically if the grand strategy of the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld had triggered Armageddon-World War III and ended our secular age, there would be no historians left to be kind to the Bush-Cheney administration (January 2, 2009)!

And now read President Obama’s February 20, 2009, brief and the Marri case before the U.S. Supreme Court. It concerns "one of the most aggressive legal claims made by the Bush administration—that the president may order the military to seize legal residents of the United States and hold them without charging them with crime." Some of the evidence against Marri may have been obtained through torture and would not be admissible (New York Times, January 3, 2009).

I’m with the civil libertarians who fear the following:

"If they adopt the Bush administration position or some version of it, said Brandt Goldstein, a professor at New York Law School, it is going to be a moment of profound disappointment for everyone in the legal community and Americans generally who believe that the Bush administration has tried to turn the presidency into a monarchy" (New York Times, January 3, 2009).

This is exactly what I tried to warn in my 2000 book It Can Happen Here. A Fascist Christian America was going to happen (2001-2009) via first a Christian Nation followed by a white Fascist Christian theocracy.

If we are not to be subjected to another and even more dangerous president (than Ronald Wilson Reagan and his SDI-Armageddon-just-around-the-corner and Gog-Magog obsessions (Rev. 20:8-15), Gog and Magog to gather them together them to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea), it is imperative that the intellectual, political and journalistic leaders of our imperiled nation closely examine the lessons of this book. (Lowe, vol. 1, It Can Happen Here, p. 14)

In a sense, Stalking the Antichrists (The Bulbul) is The Age of Deterrence (1952-64) pushed back to a bit before 1941 and extended forward to 2012. I have slightly modified the title of this history of the "nuclear idea/meme to The Age of True/Real" Deterrence. My original first draft of The Age of Deterrence was written in the summer of 1961, at Alexandria, Virginia, when as Lt. George E. This first draft of my doctrinal dissertation for the University of Chicago’s History Department (Professor Walter Johnson/Dr. Robert Osgood weighed in at a thousand pages and covered the years 1945-1962/64. It was an intellectual history of the USN’s views/ideas on the grand strategy of nuclear deterrence, inherent in the Navy’s two great mobile deterrent systems: The Forrestal CVA and its medium-range nuclear-capable aircraft (AJ-2/A3D and other Jet fighter bombers) and the Polaris SSBN, armed with sixteen solid-fueled MRBMS (SLBMS) nuclear-tipped warheads (operational in January, 1961).

I watched (January 10, 2009) the impressive/thrilling commissioning of the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the last of the Nimitz class (1972) heavy carriers. It is 1092 feet long, costs $6.5 billion, and has 5,500 sailors on board (the B-2 costs $2 billion each with a crew of two). This carrier air group of fifty-four jet planes has more destructive power than all the military forces in the world (save the Russians H-bombs). What a fitting tribute to Adm. Burke’s OP-23 battle for the USS United States versus the B-36 (1949) and his OP-09D (1960-61) struggle which saved the Polaris/Tomahawk (cruise missile) from General LeMay’s (B-52/MM) first-strike doctrine and led to the triumph of the second-strike doctrine of finite deterrence and the peace of Polaris.

This new mobile strategic weapon system brought to pass the concept of invulnerable Great Deterrents—mobile/hidden in the great ocean and the doctrines of finite deterrence . . .controlled retaliation. I fondly recall FDR and his Navy’s favorite hymn—for the Polaris SSBN and their second-strike SLBMS—which would have greatly pleased the old man.

Eternal Father strong to save,

Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!

Thus ended the Norfolk ceremonies.

The rational memes of Deterrence and Deterrents dominate both The Age of Deterrence and Stalking the Antichrists.

I selected the not exactly correct title—The Age of Deterrence. It really was intended to encompass the Age of Nuclear Deterrence beginning on August 6/9, 1945 with the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945-2012).

Furthermore, given the immense power of nuclear weapons (atomic and hydrogen), I purposely chose the term age. Recall that one of my mentors, Hans Morgenthau (also on the Democratic Advisory Council of the late 1950s), wrote the book/books on the balance of power pre-August 1945 against the new potentially unlimited power of the H-bomb (1954). In fact, Morgenthau’s great insights were valid from 4000 BCE to 1945 ACE (my Grand Paradigms numbers 1 and 2: the Age of pre-gun powder, 4000 B.C.E. to the thirteenth century through age of high-explosive power (thirteenth century to August 5, 1945)). Hiroshima/Nagasaki ushered in Grand Paradigm No 3 (1945-2009) nuclear power, hence the title "The Age of (Nuclear) Deterrence and my rationale for stalking the Antichrists with their sole command control of the potential" use of nuclear weapons as an instrument of American foreign/military power/cultural-religious-economic policy (nuclear imperialism) (see Appendices No 1-6 of Truth Seeking pp. 581-650, 2006, On the Age of Deterrence vs. The Age of Terror and The Strategic Political-Military Response (2001-2008) of the Bush Administration).

What made the Bush-Cheney (Rumsfeld) Administrations 2001-2009 so very deadly dangerous to the future of life on earth and to the very existence of our secular democratic, constitutional republic of common—not biblical law, was Rumsfeld-Cheney’s Pentagon transforming strategy.

The right-wing GOP establishment oil barons and wealth protectors, the neo-cons (Israel above all), theo-cons (a Fundamentalist Third Christian Millennium—the "last" crusade against Islam—which controls most of the world’s oil reserves), the WASPS, ruling class of White Anglo-Saxon, Northern Europeans were determined to prevent the colored ones from coming to power by the ballot box and/or the bedroom. The White Power’s fire bell in the night could well turn out to have been an AP story of June 24, 2011, dateline Washington: "For the first time, more than half of the children under age 2 in the United States are minorities . . ." (Palm Beach Post, June 24, 2011). Thus, the Bushites made the command decisions to create a Grand Paradigm Number 4. How? By nuclear superiority, technological superiority, and above all the BMD. Only the USA could afford RWR’s vision of the SDI-Star Wars (a magic umbrella/dome over the USA—a force shield right out of science fiction). Forget Hawaii—they aren’t real Americans anyway—just mutts like President Obama.

Obsessed by a Russian doctrine, the revolution in military affairs (RMA), Rumsfeld’s Pentagon would build high-tech, nimble weapons systems for all levels of warfare—insurgent/guerrilla plus nuclear, limited conventional wars ($1.9 trillion dollars worth), yes, any and all, for only more than $500/$700 billion a year for the new weapons systems and a resultant grand Fundamentalist [Fundie] Christianist/right-wing Fascist strategy (GP no. 4). It would go beyond GP No 3 and in effect neutralize any enemy’s or combination of enemies’ nuclear weapons. That was the secret agenda of the cabal that selected, groomed, and manipulated the vacuum (personality/character/details/experience—Lawrence Wilkerson’s analysis) that was Bush, during the Cheney protectorate of George Bush’s first term in 2001-2005.

The Liberal and Conservative Utopians would thus triumph: Nuclear weapons could be used by the USA alone to deter/fight and win World War III (the old Ike-Dulles-Radford Massive Retaliation strategy born again). The threat to use these nuclear weapons would be the instrument of USA, new American empire, and a Universal Fundamentalist [Fundie] Christianist World State—"Pax (Fundie) Americana (ultimately enforced by Nuclear Imperialism" of a first pre-emptive/preventive strike).

Needless to say—but I will as a historian—that the Bush administration prevented Israel from attacking Iran in the late summer/fall/winter of 2008 as an October surprise because of the mid-September meltdown of the USA and global financial system. Thus, Bush welshed on his possible secret agreement with Sharon (still in a coma), and in return, Israel was given permission to invade Gaza—to root out Hamas—by a Bush wink and nod, especially to destroy the Hamas’ supply tunnels to Egypt rather than the Iranian nuclear facilities.

On January 2, 2009, the Israeli airpower attacks against Hamas in Gaza were in their second week. Where was Waldo Bush? Yesterday (January 1, 2009) the Israeli policy of assassination via American supplied F-16s murdered Hamas leader Nizar Rayyan, his four wives, and eleven of twelve children. (Recall the 1943 U.S. assassination of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto by eighteen P-38s in the South Pacific (Ballalae) on April 18, 1943? One of those surviving P-38 pilot, Thomas Lanphier, was introduced to our kabal in the Pentagon during the summer of 1960.)

And Bush refused to show his face while Rice came out on the White House lawn and demanded a real ceasefire and the reduction of civilian casualties, but where was Bush as Gaza burned and was invaded (by U.S. supplied weapons/bombs)? The Vietnam coward also—like Cheney’s F-I-V-E (5) ‘Nam deferments—remained in hiding from the press, while innocent civilians were slaughtered by U.S. furnished/blessed weapons. How long will a just God be mocked? WWJD? What will Obama do? (The Israeli attack (31 May, 2010) in international waters on the Gaza relief flotilla ironically leads to a change in Israeli policy toward Gaza and perhaps helps advance the eventual Israeli-Palestine two-nation solution.) Will Paul Neuman’s last passionate speech at the end of Exodus: We will work together for a two state solution in the ancient Holy Land, one Jewish and the other Arab Semite brothers under the skin—ever come to pass? Or will there be a new and last final solution as H-bomb fire balls race through the ancient villages and consume the Holy Land? The fire next time? (Hans and I watched Exodus on June 25, 2011, and heard a reference to Jakov Kriechman, Nitsa Kann’s father’s Palmach-gun-running days of May 1948.) Synchronicity anyone?

Stalking the Antichrists (The Bulbul and the Antichrists) also advances and completes my ideas of "The Age of True Deterrence" (after 1965), which I have expanded in the two volumes of Stalking the Antichrists (The Bulbul); the theory behind Deterrents and Deterrence unfolds and changes as a function of the nature of the Great Deterrents, cumulating in the Soviet-Russian Doomsday Machine (the "ultimate deterrent")—operational since January 1, 1985, and the American virtual equivalent—the latest SIOP and its thousands of multi-megaton targets.

Whether or not, as my critics have asserted, my book title was too grandiose, a recent synchronicity has convinced me that my choice nearly fifty years ago of The Age of Deterrence was an inspired one—perhaps by my Daimon. Let me explain.

For weeks a book, George Boas’ The History of Ideas (1969), had been hanging around—demanding to be read. Finally on December 27, 2008, as part of my decision to restart my research and writing on The Bulbul I began reading it after noting the subtitle: An introduction to an important branch of intellectual history: how ideas originate, how they evolve in time, and how they shape human thought and action? (Deterrence, Containment, whiteness, God, Antichrist, Daimon, false nuclear prophets, "spirit warriors’/Armageddon/World War III are all components of my two Revisionist books.

In Stalking the Antichrists, I’m dealing with six main ideas that have originated in historical time, have evolved, and have most definitely shaped "human thought and actions" (1945-2012):

1.   Deterrence: Preventing by fear (1861). Deter: to restrain from acting or proceeding by any consideration (1579) and to terrify (1634) and that degree of severity which is sufficient to deter others (1766). Deterrent: deterring or tending to deter (1829). (The Age of Deterrence" began with the Soviet ICBM tests of August 27, 1957—the very day Charlotte and I left NAS Atsugi for the USA and University of Illinois Law school followed by University of Chicago, History Department, recalled to active Navy duty again in OP-09D, followed as an FSO in Washington DC/Paris,/Pentagon, speech writer[1965] and end of my military-diplomatic career in June 1965.)

2.   Nuclear Deterrent: By definition, a weapon, one derived from nuclear fission (sometime after Hiroshima, August 1945, Third Edition (1959, Shorter Oxford English Dictionary).

3.   Antichrist (1 John 2:18): An opponent of Christ. The title of a great personal opponent of and His kingdom expected to appear before the end of the world. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that an anti-christ shall come, even now are there many anti-christs; whereby we know that it is the last time (1 John 2:18). The message of 1 John presupposes knowledge of the Gospel of John, and there is no mention of the persecution under Domitian in ninety-five, so the First Epistle was probably written about AD 90. Second and Third John may be dated about the same time. All the Epistles were written from Ephesus, according to reliable tradition (The Open Bible/The Prophecy Bible (1980), p. 1171).
