The Adventures in Manhattan of Alfred Hambie and Wife, Theresa Book 2 - Alfred S. Hamby

    Chapter 1

The three (3) of us had searched for a new office in the Tribeca area of Manhattan—TRI-angle, BE-low, CA-nal was how the original name was developed. It was much too noisy, costly and very damp to stay at One Police Plaza in the basement office and so we had decided to look for another office. In searching for office space in the Tribeca area, we had decided to stay around New York City Hall and there were basically two (2) possibilities, the first was on the ground floor of the Tribune Building which was where the Old Pace Institute used to be and second was the Transportation Building.

We had finally decided on the Transportation Building because they had the cheapest cost and on the ground floor at 225 Broadway of a 44 Floor building just southwest of City Hall Park, just across Broadway. For immediate occupancy 5,000 Square Feet of office space and it had a reception room with three (3) small offices. One was for Alfred, One for Theresa and the other will be kept for a future person. The reception room will house Maryann and her desk and chair and IBM Select PC typewriter, with all the clerical items that she requires and the fax, the copy machine and a scanning machine, threading machine, three (3) file cabinets with locks, some extra chairs for guests and a small television set hanging from the ceiling that facing the chairs with a small table for magazines and periodically and a coffee and tea table. There was a stationary closet that also housed inside it a wall vault in back of some dummy office supplies and finally a bathroom and clothing closet and naturally some green floor and hanging houseplants and wall pictures throughout the entire office. Maryann and Terry were charge with all the decoration and to make our new office to look like home. Alfred job description was to get new business, the entire daily periodically were first delivered to him to check the classified advertisements and Terry was the computer expert. Terry and Alfred had promised Maryann if when the business increase in volume that we would make her a junior partner and she could have the third (3rd) office and so she would read the classified advertisement also. The front door on the outside was printed in Gold leaf "Private Criminal Investigations—New York City Only—Alfred and Theresa Hambie partners Maryann Collins junior partner.

    Chapter 2

A door bell was attached to the front door so when someone Knox’s on it very slightly or attempts to open the door, the bell rings. Maryann had it installed because she was not always at the reception desk and doing crossword puzzles because at times she was in her office, the third one, she was also reading the classified advertisements, trying to drum up some business. She being very aggressive, calls at least twice a week the mid-town office of the FBI to beg them for their left over cases, especially those crimes in New York City and daily they also place an advertisement in the local newspapers-The Village Voice, The Daily News, NY Post, and the local Penny Savers, Maryann also on a daily bases checks the Obituaries you never know where and when minor crimes take place of households, a great deal of them take place while the grievous ones are attending Mass and burial services and so when she checks the Obituaries she attempt to separate the rich ones from the poor ones. Generally she can tell the rich from the poor in funeral homes by the neighborhoods, the amount of people that shows up, the amount of flowers that are delivered and the number of cars that follow the follow the casket and flower cars. When she sees a potential client Maryann notifies Terry who will then computerize the name and address plus the day of the last services at the Church and or Funeral Homes prior to the actual burials at the cemeteries. The home addresses of the expired one that had expired is extremely important because that is where Alfred, Terry and or Maryann will cover because the entire household will probably be at the burial service that will probably last a few hours.

Owners of large homes and medium size homes in upscale neighborhoods plus business are on the top of the list for criminal behaviors. There is a pattern used by these criminals, they sometimes use a delivery vans with a very small amount of junk foods and or a flower trucks and are quite experienced. They make their deliveries to the front door first and if nobody answers the front door than they go to the rear doors. Generally speaking the rear door is always opened but if not they try the rear windows and if they are also closed they break one of them to gain entry. It’s an educated guess which home has the most valuables and easy to rob. There is generally enough manpower to strip the house clean in less than one hour of all the valuables such as; wall pictures, marble statues, glass wares, silver ware and some valuable looking furniture and lamps and fur coats and other looking expensive clothing, women handbags, electronic equipment and naturally they search for wall safes and take everything in them. If they find a Gold mine of valuables, they will call for backups

If in anyone day, it is determined by Terry’s computer analysis that there is more than three (3) potential victims, Alfred may call upon some of his previous senior investigators for help in covering a specific home otherwise if in any one day Terry’s computer analysis indicates three (3) potential victims or less, they go out to the victims home and just wait until a few people from the family arrives. All of them keep close contact with each other and report to each other maybe some criminal activities in progress. If all three are required to leave the office at the same time, Maryann calls a temporary secretarial employment agency and in a matter of thirty (30) minutes or less someone comes and Maryann is the last one to leave the office.

The Obituary column is just one of a few ways that they gets good paying clients, you get referrals from the local police departments and others and then when the cases are solved you give a donation, generally ten (10) % to the person or persons that refers the clients, you have walk-ins, telephone calls and mail that request help and nobody is in the office, there will a business card or a written message slipped under the door and sometimes you get anonymous telephone calls and or letters to look into something basically it’s just a waiting game to get clients and in certain periodically, journals and magazines, the firm must advertise and our overall budget for advertisements is approximately $500 or less per month.

Alfred does not like to stay in the office and so with him he takes his German Sheppard, they had purchased three (3) young female spaded police dogs, German Sheppard’s. One dog is assigned to each of them and they must take them where-ever they go and basically 24/7 and so each of them will have some companionship. Alfred, Terry and Maryann had to go to dog training school until they knew how to control and direct their dogs.

Alfred had decided to go Battery Park to take a look at the progress that was being made on the Statue of Liberty with his dog and also train his new dog or better yet the dog training him.

He was going to walk down Broadway, pass Trinity Church and then on to Battery Park but before he even go started, he had heard a big commotion in City Hall Park and his dog had started to bark and would not obey his orders to move. After he had quieted his dog down and from his dog blocking the front door of the Transportation Building 225 Broadway, Alfred had looked up and he had seen New York City riot policemen standing at attention about fifty (50) of them directly across the street from him and he could see a great deal of picket signs in front of New York City Hall with young black kids waving their posters and attempting to move up the steps into the mayor’s City Hall. A fairly large crowded was standing around and blocking the traffic on Broadway going north and south and the southern entrance to the City Hall Park where the policemen were gathering to move towards City Hall and breakup the rioting crowds and directly across the street was our office building.

Just as the rioting policemen, wearing their protective gear had started to move; shots were heard coming from inside the park and being directed towards the rioting policemen. Some of the people that were gathering around Alfred and 225 Broadway had started to run in all directions knocking Alfred down to the ground and falling almost on top of his watch dog. When the security guards of 225 Broadway had seen and heard all the noise outside, they had closed and had locked the front door to the building and had advised all the tenants that were gathering in the lobby to return to their offices until they hear the all-clear sound go off on each floor.

Terry and Maryann had heard some noise in the lobby and had opened their front door to take a look. They were pushed back into their office by the gathering crowd by the elevators. Their new lobby offices were only a few feet from the bank of six (6) elevators and the emergency stair case that goes from the first floor all the way up to the 44th floor.

Two heavy set men wearing regular street clothing had pushed their way into the office waving their guns. That was a wrong move because the watch dogs are trained to attack people who hold guns and so two (2) German Shepard’s dogs went into action, they were setting alongside Terry and Maryann by their legs on the inside of the front door. Both dogs had leaped up at the individuals that were holding their guns and pointing them straight at Terry and Maryann were completely caught off guard as the dogs jumped up at the hands that was holding the guns.

This had also created some commotion in the lobby besides what was going on outside the building and at least for the moment it appeared to be three (3) riots, one inside the lobby by the elevators, one just outside the front entrance to the building and one across the street in the park. Terry and Maryann finally had called off their dogs but not until the two men were disarmed and the lobby security guards had come over and had taken over. They were put in handcuffs and when they had looked for their guns, they had disappeared. It was now Terry’s and Maryann’s word versus the two (2) men as to what had really happened.

They had claimed that they were both pushed up against their front door by the crowd waiting for the elevators when these two (2) aggressive women had opened their front door and their visage dogs had jump on them for no reason at all and they are going to sue them both for the damage the dogs did to their bodies and mental anguish that was caused by the two girls and dogs. The two girls had denied everything and said they had tried to break into their office and rape them and that was when their security watch dogs attacked them.

Since for the moment there was no actual physical damage done to any of them, the security guards simply wrote out a statement, the ones that the men gave them and had asked them to sign it and did the same for the two (2) women and then took off the handcuffs from the men and told them both to leave the lobby immediately. They were escorted to the front door but not before one had said whispering into Maryann’s left ear, We are coming back. Maryann a very experienced retired FBI woman had slugged him with a right cross to his jaw, knocking him against the wall and said out-loud how dare you, you Son-of-Bitch and one of the security guards had walked between the two (2) of them and said that was enough. When the security guards had opened the front door to let the two (2) men out, they both had seen one of their tenants lying of the ground holding his door being trampled on by an unruly mob, they had given assistance to him and his dog and had pulled him up and inside the front door.

Terry and Maryann was just about to walk back into their office when they had looked at the front door to make sure that the two men were put outside the building when they both at the same time seen Alfred and his dog being picked up by the security guards but not before these two (2) men had given Alfred a knockout blow, one to his stomach and another one to his right jaw and had run into the rioting crowd before the security guards could react.

Terry and Maryann had run to the front door to give the security guards assistants. The lobby now had become very unruly and had wanted to leave the building but could not because the outside was even worse. Just as Terry and Maryann with their dogs had gotten to their front door office with Alfred and his dog two (2) rounds were heard by the front door. The person that was holding the gun had demand to be let out and so one (1) of the security guards unlocked the front door and when he did, almost everyone in the lobby had run towards the open door. The front door was made of thick unbreakable glass but it still was not strong enough not to break when two (2) forces, one from inside the lobby and the other from outside on the sidewalk attempted to push pass each other. The security guards were the only ones that were really hurt because they were caught in the middle between two moving forces.

Terry and Maryann had seen what had happened to the security guards and when they were safe in there office, they had pulled down the red fire alarm inside their office and then all three (3) of them with their dogs opened the front door and with one staying behind Terry and her dog stood behind to secure the office, Alfred and Maryann had managed to work themselves passed the rioting crowd in the lobby and rescue the two (2) security guards and make it back to his office with their dogs leading the way.

    Chapter 3

The governor of New York State had called the New York State National Guard to help in controlling the rioters over the objection of the mayor. The mayor had thought that his tactical police force can handle the rioters. What the mayor didn’t know was the FBI had informed the governor that the only way to control this mob was with the use of the National Guard because they had received word from the Senate Armed Service that they have received from confidential sources that the ongoing riot in New York City is NOT local but international in nature and if it’s not controlled immediately, it may spill over to Lower Manhattan and Wall Street.

One of the members of the Senate Armed Service Committee was a close friend of Alfred Hambie during the period of time when they were in the armed forces together and as a friend he had passed this information along to him because in the past Alfred Hambie appeared to be interested in incidents like this and criminal activities effecting the City of New York. Alfred also understood that his source of information is confidential otherwise if he had divulgated his sources he would never get confidential information again.

When the coded fax came into the office from Washington DC, Terry did not computerize it but just gave to her husband the coded fax.

When Terry gave Alfred the coded fax, she left his office to allow her husband to take out of his private vault the current conversion codes that was being used by the Senate Armed Service Committee. It was relatively simple, every third letter of the first sentence and every fourth letter of the second sentence and then every third letter of the third sentence and every fourth letter of the fourth sentence and so on. The actual message was after it was converted was MI-5 and Mossad both had reported to them that certain radical and anti-American groups are intent on bring down the heart of the Capitalist Country and New York City Hall was really not the target of the current unrest and riot but the real target was Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Reserve Bank and they whoever they are actually is planning to rob the Federal Reserve in Lower Manhattan at 33 Liberty Street"

Maryann Collins when she was a full time FBI agent working also for Alfred Hambie had notified her boss in Washington who is also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, James Gallagher, about a plan that was developed by her other boss to protect the Federal Reserve Bank in Manhattan just in case it was robbed. The person who had sent the coded fax from the Senate Armed Service Committee was notified by James Gallagher of the FBI that a private local crime investigating had existed in
