    THE READING

Last night I read a new book.

    It was written by God.

i read the howling wind and the pitter-patter of rain on a soul.

i read the different shades of darkness and light; the greens and greys

and browns and blues and reds and whites and yellows and black.

i read the warmth of a lover’s breast and the cold of a Chicago

            slaughter house.

i read the leaping flames of life and glowing embers of death.
