According to my friend, Michael Sarratt, a former U.S. Navy seaman, the loom of the light is a seafarer’s phrase which refers to the sky glow of a distant lighthouse not quite rising above the horizon. It is often the mariner’s first indicator of an approaching landfall dimly perceived in the dark night at sea. It is both an assurance and a warning: safe harbor is near; beware the rocky headlands.
I think when we are guided by our imagination (or the moon), we may perceive, like the seafarer, the loom of the light, which can lead us safely past the dangerous shores, to our destined harbor.
