American Heroes

In January 2007, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean began serving an eleven- and twelve-year sentence, respectively, in a federal prison. The two border patrol agents received this sentence for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler in the butt, as he fled across the border into Mexico. The drug smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, abandoned a van containing 743 pounds of marijuana.

US Attorney Johnny Sutton (a personal friend of George W. Bush) charged that Ramos and Compean violated border patrol policy by pursuing Aldrete-Davila without their supervisor’s approval, moving spent shell casings, and improperly reporting the fired shots. After serving over two years in prison, President Bush finally commuted their sentences on his last day in office, after receiving an enormous amount of pressure from many different factions of the country.

The purpose of this book is to inspire and encourage citizens of this country to become more concerned about our national security. Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean acted in a manner consistent with those who believe that our borders should be protected from drug smugglers and illegal crossings. They were severely punished for their heroic actions by a political machine apparently in cahoots with the Mexican drug cartel. I commend their actions and dedicate this book to the many sacrifices they and their families had to endure.

And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the Lord that smiteth. (Ezek. 7:9)

This book is not for the faint of heart. It is a fiction novel based on reality as envisioned by the author. The reality base that prompted the creation of SMITE is as follows:

1. Nuclear Threat—Nuclear weapons remain a potential threat to our nation and other free nations of the world. Kim Jong Il, leader of North Korea, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, leader of Iran, are in the process of expanding their nuclear technology. North Korea has missiles that can reach American soil. Iran has missiles which can reach Israel—their main target. Russia still has a dangerous supply of weapon-grade uranium; and Pakistan, a country filled with unrest, also has nuclear weapons. Terrorist organizations have many willing partners if they want to take the nuclear route. To date, we have identified two terrorists involved in an alleged al Qaeda plot to detonate a radioactive bomb in America.

2. Political Resistance to the US Military Involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan—There exists, throughout the country, a large antiwar movement. The movement includes members of Congress and approximately half the population of the nation. Widespread resistance to the war effort not only emboldens our enemy but also weakens the resolve and morale of our troops.

3. Border Security—The borders to the north and south of our country are virtually open. Only recently efforts have been made to secure the borders, but those efforts have been met by great opposition and have been far too little, too late.

4. Port Security—Personnel working in our ports are not properly screened, and cargo comes into this country without being thoroughly inspected. Legislation has been introduced to require the testing of international cargo for radioactive material, but security of our ports is still insufficient.

5. Political Correctness—A culture of political correctness prevails within our educational institutions, halls of justice, and executive and legislative branches of government. During the Clinton administration, Osama bin Laden was cornered on several occasions and could have been captured or eliminated. Each time, due to political uneasiness, the Clinton staff decided that the expedient response was to let him go his merry way. This attitude is still prevalent in Washington—an attitude that has a stifling effect on progress—especially in the realm of national security.

6. Military Incompetence—Donald Rumsfeld, secretary of defense during the Iraq War, came under heavy criticism for not listening to the advice of his top generals prior to our invasion of Iraq. Military experts suggest that the operation was premature and carried out without proper planning. After the invasion, lack of security of the borders on either side of Iraq, lack of security of the main roadways and cities, and lack of security in general led to the unnecessary deaths of many of our soldiers. This new make-friends-with-the-natives-and-they-will-help-you war strategy drew the ire of those who feel that if you go to war, you don’t pussy foot around with the enemy.

Global Terrorism—The United States has been a prime target for terrorists around the world for many years. The terrorist attack that occurred on our soil on September 11, 2001, was not an aberration. However, the fact that an attack of that magnitude reached our soil raised serious questions about our national security. Listed below is a history of terrorist and pro-terrorist actions that have been perpetrated against citizens of the United States. When we are attacked by terrorists, you would think our security would be tightened; but for some reason, that just hasn’t happened.
