    Fire Souls - Felicia James

    New Orleans

As the open iron casket sat in the room. The urge came over me to see who was in there. I slowly walk toward the coffin. Then suddenly I woke up with my hand on my chest frighten from the unreal dream. Pushing the black comforter halfway off the bed. Balancing myself on the tip of my toes as I got out of bed. I stumble my way through the half lighted room to the bathroom. Turning on the cold water to splash my face. Trying to shake the dream I just had. It’s just a dream I muttered softly. Rubbing the side of my face as I looked into the mirror. I clicked off the light, and slowly drag myself back to bed. I nestle in between the sheets as my mind drifted back to sleep. Then later that morning the sound of something familiar woke me, I stared out of the French window outside at the dark thick gray clouds. The radio came on playing the forecast for the day as well as a wake-up song to get the morning started. I look to see if the rain had stopped, but it seems to be no sign of slowing down. With the lightening and the thunderclaps in the distance. I frowned at the sounds of the storm, and the thoughts of the repeated dream. It was just a nightmare,’’ I closed my eyes murmuring softly. I sighed and went to the bathroom. To get the sleep off my face. All my life I have lived here in the Bayou of New Orleans. Where the muddy waters of the Mississippi River ran South of here. I lived twenty miles on a road called Fluer De lis. Where a huge white house sat off from the warm waters of the bayou. Covered by cypress trees, and pitch woods. That hide the sun perfectly. I quickly got dressed, and headed to work. I opened the door and stepped out on the porch. I stared out at the rain hoping my uniform didn’t get drenched to bad. The smell of the damp rotting ground of the bayou lingering in the humid air. As I hurried to the car. I pressed the remote to unlock the 2016 black limited edition mustang Shelby GT 500. The drive to work was about thirty minutes, but the conditions of the weather today was going to delay the time to work. There was no close parking spots. So I found the nearset spot and parked. Entering the clock room before I went to the nurse’s station. The thunder and lightening was getting harder. I moaned, It is going to be a long day, I mumbled softly. I sighed. As I walked to the nurses’ station desk. I unwillingly searched through the stack of manila patient’s folders for the doctors. Hoping the day didn’t turn out horrible, with all the bad weather and Mardi gras wonder what strange thing that was going to happen. I sat in the hard chair with wheels in front of two computers, and telephones that rang constantly in my ear while I sat staring at the white and mint green trimming wall. In a daze still trying to forget the dream that I had last night about my parents accident. Haley.’’ I blinked a thousand times a minute. Yes, sorry you were saying.’’ I need you in room 208 in ten minutes.’’ The on call doctor was giving me strict orders. I need to get a CBC on the patient,’’ he said. I wrote down the order in the charts trying to take all the doctors’ orders in. Haley are you with me?’’ I blinked again with my eyelashes acting like hummingbird wings. Certainly let’s go,’’ I said under my breath. I hurried into the room, to assist the doctor, and was back at the nurses’ station in five minutes. Time went by fast, and lunch time was here. I followed the nurse’s, and doctors in line to get the much needed nutrition to get me through the day. As I exit the line I eyed my favorite table that set off in the corner of the cafeteria. I put the tray on the round dark wood-grained table, trying to disguise my existence. I could hear the chattering of nurses at their tables babbling about Mardi gras. I was morose about the whole thing. The streets of New Orleans have seen its share of blood spills, and sins of darkness. Creepy voodoo man walking the streets, and getting people to part ways with the dark magic for their deepest desires. For me I never believed in the supernatural, or anything dark. Black cats, broken mirrors shattering to pieces, brick-dust at the front door of a house. How I can forget the horseshoes hung to protect from evil? None of these things made me believed that anything dark lurked in the clandestine world, or New Orleans. One thing I did believe in, and that was Love. Love was something that if the laws of physics had its way, I would be married by now. Drowning in the forever bliss of romance,’’ I sighed. Picking over my food as I stared daydreaming into the over populated room of the cafeteria, paying no mind to the chaos around me. Thinking of last night’s dream. Hello, earth to Haley. She waved her hands in front of my face. Hi Melinda. Haley you have been looking a little distant,’’ her forehead creasing. As she stood in front of me with her red silky hair, and baby blue eyes that didn’t fit her bubbly personality. She was nice and polite though. I frowned, at the expression on her face. Haley are you alright? It looks like you’re not in the spirit of the festivities around here. You need a cup of coffee, or two.’’ Her lips pulled back as the dimples in her cheeks sink in. I’m pretty worn out just ready for my vacation I guess.’’ I’ll take your advice for the coffee thanks. Don’t worry about me,’’ I muttered smiling. Yes, you do look like you need rest,’’ Melinda continued on insulting my look. Are you going to Mardi gras tonight?’’ I asked. Yes, I have a costume made for the party tonight at my boyfriend’s house afterwards. She snickered. Don’t let the voodoo man still your soul, Haley.’’ I’ll try not to,’’ I said. Melinda sighed. Haley anyways for what it’s worth. I hope to see you there if not have a great vacation. And Haley I know this marks the one year of your parents death, but try to find closure have some fun. Just in case I don’t see you before the end of your shift.’’ She threw her arms around me. Then she looked at her phone. Haley I’m sorry, but I have to finish my rounds. Melinda smiled. Sure thing.’’ I smiled back at her. She walked down the west wing going back to the nurse’s station. I looked around to see if anyone was still here. The cafeteria was empty everyone had vanished. No, talking or pagers going off. I slide the uneaten food across my tray letting my mind wonder not paying much of attention around me, as I sat at the cafeteria lunch table on break. Thinking about the crowded streets of New Orleans. This will be my first vacation around Mardi gras time. Since me, and my friends went when we were seniors in high school. I sat at the cafeteria table on break finishing my lunch. I checked the time it was 12:45 p.m… Almost time for me return back to work for my Lunch break. Enjoying your lunch Ms. DuBois?’’ I stared up at the eye candy wan- doctor. I gasped. He never looked down at my name tag as he called my name. I frowned. Wondering was he stalking me he probably charmed every nurse in his presence with his mesmerizing –porcelain face, and smile of his. I mumbled in silence. He really could us a tan,’’ I grinned. Excuse me can I help you?’’ The black haired doctor eyes were enchanting unnatural, but the charms he put on. Didn’t take away from his muscled built body as he posed near the table. I could feel this strong urge of covet around me. My heart started to pulse harder… Ah! Are you alright? His voice calm. Yeah, I’m fine. Actually a little lightheaded. I gasped heavily. Take it easy, his words like deep shimmering bells. His features were beyond any words of description. It was all he needed to convince me I was going to be fine. With his looks he could convince anyone what he wanted them to do. Complete their work, jump off a bridge, be his slave if he wanted them to. He melted the hearts of every nurse and female doctors within his presences. It’s Haley right?, If it’s not too formal to say?’’ He said No not to formal.’’ My mouth flung open as I took in his appearences. The beautiful doctor pupils darken. His flawless marble- face smiled showing a set of pearly whites. Since where colleagues it’s only out of respect we be acquainted with one another. I’m Dr. Tyler Spencer….’’ I know you’re the doctor from E.R…’’ The tone in my voice became really thin. He laughed low and soft. Yes, well since we are on a first name basis. I only think it’s fair that you call me Tyler,’’ Tyler charmingly argued. Quickly my hand extended out in front of me. Tyler please just call me Haley,’’ I timidly muttered. Noticing the archaic-black sliver ring on his translucent hand. He kept his hand cemented to his side. Obviously not acquainted enough. I thought to myself. Oh! his papery face frowned. As the lined in his face barely defined. I hope you’re not uncomfortable with me not greeting you with a hand shake. It’s just that one of my patients is very ill. I care not to spread the contagious germ. You understand don’t you,’’ he said charmingly dark. Tyler of course I do. I understand completely. Rule number one. Make sure patients are safe first,’’ I said. He smiled stiffly. Haley I just want to say your humanity for the practice is unbelievable. You should consider going back to college to become a doctor.’’ He smiling barely showing his teeth. I will give it some thought,’’ I said. Well, I would put in good word for you at any medical school of your choice. Haley just say the word. I will have a recommendation in your hands by the end of your shift,’’ Tyler smiled. Tyler thanks that’s unstinted of you. How will I ever repay you for your generosity?’’ I softly smiled. Looking deep into his changing eyes as I talked to him. Haley just finish and set out on your journey to save lives as what you born for,’’ he said. I hesitated trying to find the right words. I stared at him something came over me. The feeling of lust and calmness. Well… Dr. Tyler. That’s a promise I can assure you will happen eventually,’’ I said. I notice that I had ripped up the napkin, rolling the tiny balls of paper with the tip of my fingers. I sighed. "You have a nice day Haley. Excuse me I have to go check on some patience. Enjoy your lunch,’’ Tyler said. Charming me as he walked away. He threw napkins into the trash bend on the way exiting the cafeteria. Taking the felling of lust that surrounded me with him. I watched him as he walked out of sight down the hall to the patient room.

Night shift was hard, and I was glad the day was going to end with me leaving for my vacation. I could hardly wait to get home and relax. I walked over to the trash to through away the white foam container that held my uneaten food. Noticing the food in the trash was never touched. I kept my juice and walked toward the elevator. I pushed the down arrow button on the panel on the concreted speckled wall. To go back to the nurse’s station. I walked off the elevator with someone yelling code blue and ambulances bringing in patients. It was a car accident the bad rainy weather made the roads a havoc. I just hope by the time I departed from work it would have slacked off a little. The hospital was been pack from an accident that happened early when I came in. I was sitting at the nurses’ station when I got a break from my rounds. When I notice a Dr. Spencer was walking toward the nurses’ station. Nurses!!’’ nodded Dr. Spencer. Doctor Spencer,’’ the nurses all chattered together. They all watched his every move as he walked around the stack of files that was in front of him. Dr. Spencer you have a patient in room 209.’’ The lacerations to his left leg. Nurse Jones can you assist me in the patients room,’’ he said. Certainly Doctor,’’ She grabbed her stethoscope with no hesitations. The nurses was hanging Mardi gras decorations in the nurses’ station. Covering the white walls of the nurse’s station. His tall muscled built frame and beautiful eyes had all of the women’s attention. All of their tongues were on the floor as he smiled and walked through the nurse’s station. I could hear the nurse’s behind me talking about him intimately. If he had supersonic hearing he would know how they felt about him every time he walked in the room, but he wasn’t superman. I was sure if he wasn’t any kind of man they way he looked. Hello Dr. Spencer.’’ Betty biting her pink shimmer lip gloss. Staring at Tyler with lust in her eyes and blushing. Her cheeks turning a light red. Ah! Yes, Betty.’’ Hey! yourself Dr. Tyler. I hope it’s not too late happy birthday,’’ she declared with a smile. Yes, very old I should say,’’ My eyes tighten. Huh! Not old enough,’’ I mumbled. My eyes followed him out. The nurse from pediatrics handed me the file and asked me to look up an existing file for the pregnant woman that sat in the waiting room. How you knew about his birthday?’’ I said. Couple of doctors and nurses last year gave him a party here in the cafeteria. Can you believe it he still looks the same not aged any.’’ She scribbled on the thick pad without taking her eyes off Dr. Tyler. I frowned at her. I wanted to wave my hands in her face to see if he had put her under some sort beauty trance. He’s an eye full,’’ she said smiling. Excuse me,’’ I said looking at her. You can’t say you haven’t thought about it. Every woman in this building have thoughts about him,’’ Betty still gawking at him. His wife is a lucky woman.’’ She smiled then nudge me. Or a UFC women’s boxer,’’ I muttered. The patient with the wheelchair to the other wing of the hospital. He still stood next to the other side of the nurse station while the nurses whispered to each other. I kind of found it distracting. His light colored eyes and brown hair didn’t take away from his captivating beauty. I stared at him every day for a year since I was here. Except for our encounter in the cafeteria earlier. His whole appearance was breathtaking, and a mystified experience. The nurses all fan themselves when he walked out the door. Blinded by his spellbinding features. I wasn’t the sliver ancient ring that shined on his finger that said it all. He glanced at me as I watched him walk away from the nurse’s station. He looked like a hot young male model that didn’t age at all. As I count down the last hour of my shift. That Dr. Spencer is hot, huh, said Tracy.’’ Fanning herself with the manila file folders in her hand. I frowned and rolled my eyes. As I gathered the files for processing. Yes, he is indeed.’’ Hey! Ready for that vacation’’ Tracy fidgeted with excitement. Sh! I can’t wait another minute.’’ You, will be missed,’’ she said. I smiled at her. You, will be missed as well. Tracy you want be alone though you’ll have Debra, Susan and whoever else they can drag in here. Now if you excuse me my shift has ended.’’ I gathered my things at the nurse’s station going to the time clock area to clock out for two weeks’ vacation. As I walked away Tracy yelled. Bye Haley! Have a good vacation alright.’’ I will.’’ As I waved good-bye to her, and the other staff members. My tired-worn out body dragged to the clock-room. Swiping the I.D tag to clock out. Haley see you later hope you have a good time on your vacation,’’ Mrs. Susan Thornton from the night shift was entering the hospital. Okay Susan.’’ I stopped to hug her good-bye. I headed for the exit down the ramp of the hospital to the parking garage to my car. It was raining still the clouds were dark and we was getting the much needed rain in South Louisiana. The rain still showed no sign of letting up. With this weather, and time on my hands. I was bound to spend most of it in pajamas, and a pulled back ponytail. Hello,’’ I greeted. As the young very pallid woman about my age walked in the hospital. She looked different off her face wasn’t tan like she was from South Louisiana. She was unusually pale- her eyes were reddish-amber very unearthly. She scornfully looked at me as passed me. Like she was ready to attack me, or hated me. I remember that I had bought a can of pepper spray because of the night shifts I was working. I reached down in my tote bag to get my little red umbrella out. I pushed the little button letting it out before I walked out into the rain. I heard a deep voice coming from behind me as I stood at the edge of the garage. Haley have a nice vacation. Make sure you get plenty of rest and not do too much,’’ said Tyler. I sighed. OH! Tyler try not to kill the nurses while I’m gone,’’ Smiling at him. His eyebrows curved inward on his face. As he smiled playfully. I could barely make out what he was saying to me. The sound, and smell of him drawn me closer to him. Pulling me willingly to him again. Haley.’’ I snapped out of it. Sorry what was that you were saying?’’ keeping my voice placid. As I looked into his gold, fiery eyes. Haley, I was asking you if you were going to Mardi gras tonight?’’ You’re young, take advantage of it while you still can,’’ he smiled showing me his brilliant teeth. That was weird.’’ I never felt that before until now. I sighed and shook my head. I’m going out tonight for a little while with some friends. I babbled getting lost into his unnatural changing eyes. Maybe we will run into each other,’’ he said. Looking at me with his mesmerizing eyes. He smiled. With the color of his eyes turning from fiery-gold. To dark crimson. See you there,’’ he said. Tyler I will see you later.’’ I started walking toward my car. Well, you know.’’ Turning to say good-bye, but he was gone without a trace. I looked into the parking garage him to see if he was getting into his car but nothing. He had vanished. Okay that was weird,’’ I mumbled. I walked out to the edge of the parking garage as the rain poured down. I fought with the umbrella so the wind wouldn’t take it away while I walked to my car. The black mini umbrella was not much of service because of the wind blowing the rain. As I walked to the parking garage across the street. My black scrubs was getting soaking wet. Sticking to me as I hurried to my car. As I reached for the car door handle then my cellphone ranged. I did not answer it until I got into the car out of the rain. It was my friend Kelsey. Hello, Haley are going out with me tonight, and have fun at Mardi gras? Two words to you, men and dancing.’’ I laughed at Kelsey sense of humor of helping me with my love life. OH! Yeah that,’’ I whispered to myself knowing my love life was a disaster. And that I will never find the love my mother and father had. Yes, I will meet you there but I have nothing suitable to wear,’’ I moaned. Haley you have time to go and get a dress, or some type of clothing,’’ she insisted. I will have to call you back when I get home. Hey! Where we are going to meet at?’’ I asked hoping that we didn’t meet at Ross place. Her tone of voice changed. Look just put on something fancy and hot. Haley no black clothing,’’ she said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes at what she was saying to me about my sense of fashion. Kelsey she could pass for a model on a runway. She was a walking human Barbie doll. Her blonde hair, and brown eyes made her the must envied by every woman who saw her. Alex was the high fashion detective that keep up with every fashion style when it hit the runway. Ross he was similar to me, but in another sex. And the one thing we didn’t share was his short blond style, and his masculine body. Haley did you hear me?’’ I blinked vigorously. Sorry.’’ Can we go out tonight?’’ she asked. I nervous bit my lips. Trying to make sure this what I wanted to do on my night off. What the hell?’’ I answered. Sure.’’ I could hear the tone in her voice happier. I put an end to her suffering. By the way Haley you’re on vacation have fun.’’ Just take it easy on me. I haven’t been out in a long time.’’ Haley just leave it to me. I’ll take good care of you. Besides this time we don’t have school in the morning,’’ she said. She was laughing on the phone. I rolled my eyes. Kelsey I will meet you there at 7p.m.’’ I hung up the phone, and got in my black 2013 Mustang that I purchase two days ago. I speed off through the traffic lights going to the nearby new boutique to pick outfit to wear to Mardi gras. As I pulled up in front of the boutique I parked. I got out of the car, and walked to the department store. To pick out a black mini that would go with a black pair of stilettos I gotten for my birthday. Is that all for you today?’’ Yes,’’ I answered.’’ Thirty-two fifty,’’ the clerk said. I swiped my credit card. Have a nice day and she reached me my receipt. I eyed her I. D. tag. Thank You, Monica.’’ I grab the bags exiting the store. Mardi gras is always fun in New Orleans people from all over the country come here during this time of the year? Every year Mardi gras being getting crazy and crazier. There been killings and more arrest and strange things happening here. There is more to New Orleans and Mardi gras and king cake and Cajun cuisines. Its time when we decorate our homes, place of business and most of all having fun at parades. Sometimes things can get really weird during Mardi gras. Working in the E.R. I have seen and heard many things that go on at the parades. I know personally I went to every mardi gras since I was old enough to go. I think it will be good to get out since I am on vacation. Maybe something crazy just might happen to me. Like they say it only happens in New Orleans wicked city in the state. Maybe my prince charming might ride in on his white horse, and carry me off into the sunset. The odds of that chance happening is very small. I probably die before I found prince charming I smiled, and cleared my mind of that silly thought. I past a couple holding hands while they walked along the sidewalk. Looking very much in love as he walked with her gazing into her eyes. I envied her. I would give anything to have love like that, or to even experience it. I walked outside the mall parking lot to find the letter parking area I parked in. The city was ready for the Mardi gras parades and the stores were all decorated in the green, black, yellow beads. They’re hanging on the street signs as well. I was ready to just get home and rest before my night out on Bourbon Street. I found my car and push the remote on my key chain. The car alarmed beep unlocking itself. I slide into the driver’s seat turning the key to start the engine of the car. I slapped the car in gear pulling backing up out of the parking space. I straighten up the front end of the car as my feet got heavy on the accelerator. The car snarled as I speed to the light that stood between me, and the road home. Two teenagers was in a mustang similar, but there’s didn’t have the motor like my car. Just the sound of the engine roaring. Rumbling as if it was straight from NASCAR. The young boy winked at me. Guess I could have a little fun. When the light turn green I snatched the gear, and speed off leaving them behind at the exiting to the ramp. Not bad.’’ I laughed and turned down the road home. With the sunset darkening the bayou as I strived for home. I let off the gas changing out of gears letting the engine breath. Brik my father taught me everything about cars. I was the boy he never got, and the girl my mom always dreamed of. I gave signal to exit the ramp going to the bayou of New Orleans. The river queen ferry slowly chugged away in the distance of The Lake Pontchartrain. As turned on the bayou roads of New Orleans. Passing the woods and the cypress trees with the moss hanging from them, and swampy bayou lakes. I turned down the main drive to the house. I was anxiously to get ready for my night in the city. Going to Mardi gras tonight keeping a positive mind that I might find a special someone, or just have a good time with my friends. Especially Ross you could never be bored around him. I pulled in the driveway speeding to the front of the entrance were the mossy cypress trees lined the driveway on both sides of the road to the house. That was pushed back from the one-way highway. I parked the car by the large cypress trees, and eyed my slightly damped scrubs. As I forced the key in the hole. I just knew my mom was going to be there with her bright beautiful smile. Telling me to wipe my feet. The ache in my chest was still there. In three weeks it would be a solid year since the accident of my parents passing. The presence of my parents still lingered in this house even while there gone. Maroon curtains that hung from the tall windows covered the sun on a good sunny day. Darken up the house if you wanted to stay hidden from the world. The white marble that circle the fireplace. And a couch to match the curtains. The walls were a lovely shade of antique white. And the stairs that spiraling up the wall to the rooms upstairs. With the pictures of my parents, and me when I was little, and college until now. And a collection of her art from over the years of taking painting classes. My mother and father built this house as if there were going to be more siblings, but that never happened. The woodened hat rack that held many of different Mardi gras beads, and old hats of my fathers that had Fleur De Lis in the middle of them. He wore these hats every time we went to a game. They hung next to a wooden key chain holder, that held keys to his black 79’ Charger. Seeing the oil stained keys brought back memories for me as well. I could still smell my mother’s perfume that lingered in the house. She had worn the same perfume since I was a child. I bet it was trapped inside the walls from the years of her spraying it on herself. Every time I came home it overwhelms me with sadness. I sighed and held the well of tears in. Hoping that my tear ducts hold them in. I was even more tired now than when I got off work. I flung into my father’s favorite chair. I found my MP3 player remote turning on some music for comforting. I hated to be alone in this big house. The smell of cigar smoke, and fine scotch was still in his chair as well. Agh!’’ The flinched of pain ripped from my mouth. Quickly I got up wondering what had pinched me. I quickly pulled out a sliver pin with my father’s name engraved in it. I placed the name tag on the end table that sat next to his chair. His things were still there just like he left it. I didn’t change anything in the house after my parent’s death. I really didn’t see the point. It felt like they were going to fade from my memories somehow. Ever since I was a child my parents were lawyers. Our family has always live around the bayou even before I was born. My parents has always been defense attorneys. Brik DuBois my father was the best lawyer in New Orleans. And well known for his work. My mother Julianna DuBois lived here all her life, but my father she meet him in college. They met at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge La, and fell in love that’s when I was born. It was still hard to deal with my parent’s death. Julianna my mother was nothing like me. She said I was just like my father in so many ways. The black hair, green eyes. My dad didn’t like the sun, but I practically sunbath every chance I got. Brik my dad wasn’t timid. He practically told you what was on his mind freely. Unlike me I just kept it all bottled up inside into it over flowed like a volcano. Raw pure anger, unpredictable my mom use to say. But I learned to deal with it. So far my life has been my life pretty much. As I deal with every pain that stab my beating heart. But during my parents death I learned a lot. Always spend every waking moment telling your loved ones how much you care for them before it’s too late. That night I talk to my mother on the phone. She said that my father was up in the computer room working. He didn’t need to be disturbed. She said he was being honored. That I should come home from college to support him. But I had finals to study for. That night a bad storm had come. I peeked out the small key hole in the door. The state police and the campus police came up to my dorm. To tell me about my parents death. I couldn’t say much. I just sat on the edge of the bed with this huge hole in my chest. It felt like time had stood still. Then for I knew it I had to bury both of them. Suddenly as they pushed their coffins in the cemented vaults. They pushed my breaking beating heart in with them. I could feel the cold air coming off the stones that send a chill down my spine. I don’t even remembered. When? Or How? We left the cemetery. I mean I do know how. Just how did I get from one place to another? I was in such a shock. I was alone now with no family at all until after the funeral. Back at the house everyone I knew was giving me their deepest condolences about my parents. I didn’t care at that moment. The only two things I cared about was gone. Ross stared at me as I sat in my father’s chair. With warm tears flowing down my made-up face. At this point I really felt like an orphaned. I walked upstairs to my mother’s room. Sitting on the un-messed side of her bed. I wanted to just grab the huge white down pillow, and shout as loud as I could into it. It felt like I was going to lose my sanity at that moment. Until I bumped a small box that stuck out from underneath the bed. I slide the box from under the bed-placing it on my lap. It was pictures of her when she was young. Then the pictures I held in my hand made vivid memories flood my mind. Then I thought, I wasn’t alone after all. My aunt, and family lived in a small town in Louisiana called Saint Joseph in Tensas Parish. She liked it because it was quiet and she knew everyone. Sounds pretty boring to me knowing everyone you see every day. My parents never took me to visit them because they were always working. You can say, I’m like my parents as well because I never went to visited them either. Working as a Registered Nurse in the E.R in the hospital has its disadvantages on your life when it comes to family. I never have time to party or hang with friends. Never had the time for love or a relationship. I was looking for love my whole life. I just never felt a connection with anyone. I had a boyfriend, but not a first love. That one person who would stop my world with his presence. I never met that one to set my heart on fire. Unlike most people my age are married with two kids by the time they are graduating college. I guess some people are that lucky to find the one the first time. I pulled my black hair up into a ponytail, and securing it with a rubber band. I walked upstairs to my bedroom to take a shower. The phone chirped loud until the answering machine picked up. Haley I know your there it’s me Alexandra. I’m on my way to your house, to see if I can borrow that white top you have in your closet. You know the one you never worn.’’ I frowned at her for pointing out that I didn’t wear my clothes. I’m pulling up now,’’ she said. The machine beeped off. I dressed fast as my tired arms could. Putting on the shirt and pair of boy shorts. The sound of the doorbell echoed upstairs. Alex,’’ I exhaled as ran down the stairs. I opened the door Alex I got your messages.’’ I thought you hate black?’’ I said. I didn’t say I hate black. I just choose to have colors than boring death.’’ Alex black is not death. It’s sort of.’’ I hesitated with my choice of words. She frowned. Death,’’ she reminded me. Okay, your point is proven now,’’ I rolled my eyes at her. Do you have something that I can borrow?’’ said. Yes,’’ I pointed upstairs. How was work? You look.’’ Sarcastically I beat her to the words. Like a zombie. Really why everyone is keep saying that? I’m really that hideous? Please come in.’’ I stepped backwards and held the door for her as she walked in the house. You know, I really miss your parents, Haley.’’ Me too,’’ I aguishly mumbled. Cute boy shorts by the way.’’ She laughed. OH! Thanks,’’ I mortified said. I looked in the small mirror by the door. To see if I resemble the zombie she said I looked like. So you came to rob my closet,’’ I said. Yes, only because you don’t have a fashion sense, and I need a white shirt,’’ she said. Pushing my black racks of clothing to the other side of the closet. Kelsey borrowed mine. She went on rambling about her shirt she gave to Kelsey. Can you believe she waste red wine on it should make her buy me another one? Alex may I be of assistance?’’ I smiled, and handed out the shirt to her. Have this one.’’ That’s all you have is a black? Even your scrubs are black. Okay seriously. Haley you need to brighten up your life?’’ she shouted from the closet. I gave her a warning glance as she held up the black shirt. Alex, I said. You really don’t have a choice this is it.’’ I can assure you that black is all you’ll ever fine in there,’’ I said. There has to be a white shirt in this fashion less closet,’’ she examine every piece of fabric on a hanger. Whatever.’’ Rolling my eyes at her. I’m going to finish dressing.’’ Great, Haley you leave me in here to dig in this black hole of no return. Alex looked at me pointing at the dark clothes that lined my closet inside, and out. I smiled. Enter at your own risk,’’ I cautioned her and smiled. Hoping my sense of black clothing don’t overwhelm her at all. I wasn’t an open person. And my choice of clothing said it. Dark as my soul. Mrs. Vlainer she said about me wearing black. She said that my soul was dark. That was something unexplainable. I have worn black ever since I was a child. The question that laid heavy on my parents mind was why? For that matter the answer remained a secret. So what time are we leaving?’’ Looking at the clock to hurry her along. At 7p.m. Haley you have amnesia?’’ she asked joking. No, just a case of lack of sleep,’’ I warned. I looked out the window. Looking at the sun-setting in the bayou. The rain had completely evaporate off the asphalted road outside. And the clouds were a pinkish violet as the sun went down behind the clouds. Well, Ross is going to meet us here.’’ Kelsey is already there she had to work. One of her co-workers didn’t show up so she had to cover them.’’ So Ross didn’t have to work after all?’’ I said. No, he’s lucky just like you are.’’ Alex torn through my closet like a tornado. I’m glad you’re off this year.’’ Her head buried in the mound of black clothing. Telling me that last year was no fun because I wasn’t there. Because I spend that year working a double shift. Well, it’s my way of life and I enjoy doing it,’’ I said. Haley if that’s what makes you happy then good for you.’’ Alex the only thing that would make me happy right now. If you find a shirt, and I get dress so we can get out of here.’’ Fine stay there I have to get dress.’’ I walked out of my bedroom to the other bedroom next door to put on my clothes. I put on the mini dress and the black heels and fixed my make-up and hair. I grab the glass bottle of perfume and sprayed into the air, and letting the mist fall on me. Alex are you still in there?’’ Peeking in the empty room. She must have gone downstairs. A deep voice echoed up the stairs. I head for the stairs only to hear my phone ring. Ugh! Forgot my phone. I ran back in my bedroom to get it. Hello,’’ I answered. It was Kelsey.’’ Her voice echoed loudly through the phone. Hey! You guys one the way?’’ Kelsey sounded like she was getting impatient with us. Yes, just trying to finish dressing, Kelsey. Be there shortly.’’ Alright Haley I just wanted to know if you guys was even close to coming.’’ Be there in about fifteen- to-thirty minutes.’’ Haley don’t worry so much you look radiant tonight just get down here.’’ I will.’’ See you soon, Kelsey.’’ I pushed the end button on the phone. I still heard the loud voice talking and enjoyed with excitement. I walked downstairs to the kitchen. To make sure the house was secure before I leave. That was weird I didn’t hear a doorbell. Perhaps Alexandra knew who it was. Then the voice sound familiar. It was Ross. Where’s my sister?. The dark twisted one like myself.’’ The sounds of Ross deep voice echoed up the stairs to the room. Alex.’’ She’s upstairs I hope. Taking notes about what I said earlier.’’ OH! What might that be?’’ Ross smirked with his eyebrows folded in. Her sense of fashion is black and blacker.’’ Her name should be Morticia. Her gothic styles are a bit overwhelming sometimes.’’ Ross laughed at Alex. "Well, she been a dark clothing wearing girl ever since elementary, and all the way through high school pretty much until college. Ross smiled. So I doubt that she’ll ever get passed it.’’

I could hear them arguing about my dark fashion choice. Upstairs in my room. I didn’t care neither did Ross. At least it wasn’t some irresponsible thing. That would come back to haunt me. Wasn’t like I was killing someone. It’s only clothing. Ross the both of you are two of a kind with their fashion choices. You wear to much dark as well so does Kelsey. Feels like I’m in a gothic pack. Well, more of a rock gothic, but more rock wear than gothic. Or more of the same. I just want you guys to look like a million bucks. So when they see us together they can say. Hey! Look at those well respected young people. They really have it together. That’s impossible with you three,’’ said Alex. Rolling her big brown eyes. We can’t help it if you’re a princess Barbie,’’ sarcastically Ross deep voice ringed out as he laughed at her. She rolled her eyes at him. Hey! Ross when you get here?’’ I said smiling at him.’’ A while you haven’t missed much. Just this Barbie judging the way we dress. Well, that’s Alexandra. We looking hot Haley. Going to catch you a man tonight?’’ Ross said grinning.’’ His voice deep, and hysteric as he eyed me up and down. What?’’ I tried to reinforce the question being ask about my personal relationship. Alexandra rolled her eyes at him. Sort of if he’s the right one,’’ I said. Haley sweet set of wheels you got there, sure you can handle that much power,’’ said Ross. I can handle it. Sure you can handle that yellow Hummer with rims’’ I punched his masculine shoulders playfully. Without a doubt. So you ladies ready to have a good time tonight,’’ said Ross excited and fidgeting impatiently. I grab my house keys and put them in my black leather hand bag. We all walked out of the house piling in Ross’s hummer. Really Ross yellow,’’ Alexandra laughed. At least it bling’s,’’ Ross mumbled. Yeah! It really stands out.’’ She winked at me. Hey! You know the ladies like it’’ Ross folded his arms. Haley tell me you don’t like it.’’ No, really Ross it does kind of feels like I’m riding on a bus to school,’’ I said. A brother don’t get no love. Well, you want switch for that bad ass Mustang,’’ he said. Not a chance. Way out of your league pony boy,’’ With my one eyebrow slightly raised smiling and nodding no. What’s that car run you a month half of your blood salary?’’ What? No, Ross. I saved for a car, and I just happen to luck up on a good deal. And no I didn’t have to use my blood salary yet,’’ I said. We looked at each other and laughed historically. Yeah! I’m so glad your hanging out with us this year for mardi gras. Last year was so boring. Not this year were going to party ladies.’’ Ross pulled up a block away from Bourbon Street. I step away from the car as he set the alarm on his hummer. Ladies, shall we.’’ Alex intertwine her arms into his masculine-biceps. I tagged along from behind feeling much like the third -wheel. As we walked down the block through the alley that came up on the backside of Bourbon Street. You think Kelsey off work yet?’’ Alexandra gave him a quick answer. She should be.’’ We walked down the crowded streets with tourists and people from all walks of life down here. As we went down Bourbon Street I noticed a very pallid man. Standing in the crowd watching us as we walked toward the club where Kelsey worked. The strange decorative beads were falling and the people were catching them. Then I heard through the crowd. Hey! Hot mama! A man whistle through his teeth. I looked up to see what balcony he was standing on. To pin point were the beads were coming from. I caught the beads in mid-air. Looking at the piece of paper that was tied to it. Nice she still got it,’’ Ross teased. I sighed. Sure never lost it.’’ I opened the letter that was stuck on the beads reading the phone numbers that he wrote on the paper. I gave him a smile and then dropped it. Leaving the paper with the man phone number on the beaded cover ground. I looked toward the street to see if the strange man was still watching us. But there was no sign of him. The skin on my forehead wrinkled. Ross notice that I was suddenly had this serious look about me. Seriously, Haley what’s wrong?’’ He glanced over to the other side of the street. To see what had made me give that had put that frown on my face. Do you see someone you know?’’ It was like a porcelain statue that stood in the corner. But with life appearances of a human. I shook it off. Trying to erase that thought out of my mind. Of what I was just looking at. Ross, I thought someone was following us.’’ I slowly turned my head around as we walked down the over populated street of New Orleans. Finally.’’ Do any of you see Kelsey?’’ I looked through the crowd. Yes, look she’s over there.’’ She was waiting on customers. Hey! Kelsey over here.’’ Ross’s deep voice sounded through the crowd. I was ready to leave. I was starting to feel the effects from work. Hung over with sleepiness. Kelsey.’’ Ross hugged her. Where did you find the zombie?’’ Kelsey said sarcastically.’’ She smiled pointing at me. Great thanks for the humor. Glad to see you would be nice. Not where you found a zombie Kelsey. Sorry, Haley you look like hell.’’ Thanks for the compliment Kelsey. ’’My eyebrows half raised at her. Haley sorry you look hot. I envy you.’’ She corrected. So what can I get you guys.’’ Club soda with lime,’’ I ordered. I’ll have the same as Haley. I’m driving,’’ Ross smiling and looking at me with his blue eyes. Coming right up.’’ Kelsey took down the orders on a small tablet. Alex so what is its going to be?’’ She eyed her. Nothing for me thanks,’’ she said. What time are you getting off from work?’’ I said finally. She walked away slowly through the crowd. Haley in about ten minutes are so,’’ she said. She went behind the counter to make our club sodas. Don’t look, but there’s a man staring at you from the corner,’’ she warned me. Preppy. Untanned,’’ she watched him, as he watched us closely. He’s fashionably together. Is that better,’’ she replied. With her face wrinkled as she eyed the unusual pallid stranger that sat in the corner of the bar. You know he could be a serial killer.’’ But from a distance he seemed odd an unproven theory. A theory that could be proven to make Kelsey’s theory put to shame. I never judge someone. Until I fully open the book to read them. He was no open book. He was a stranger that stared continuously. Great,’’ I bit my lip. Hesitantly pulling my hair back looking over my shoulder to see him. It was a strange very pallid young man there standing in the corner of the bar. Leaning up against the brick wall. Watching me like a hawk watching a mouse. Contemplating my every move. My skin wrinkled on my face. What is his problem?’’ I sighed. Then walked toward him to ask him what the problem was. I demanded to know why he was staring at me. No, don’t go by yourself he could be dangerous,’’ said Ross. My eyes narrowed. Looking at the handsome stalking doctor. I whispered to myself. He wouldn’t follow me here. He had no idea that I was even coming here tonight. I rubbed my head trying to get my thoughts together. I took my eyes off of his presences for a moment. Is that Tyler?’’ I softly mumbled. I looked over toward the door again, and he was gone. Where did he go?’’ Haley who is Tyler?’’ he said. He’s this doctor from work.’’ He stared at you like he wanted you,’’ he said. Ross no, he’s gorgeous, but I wouldn’t. He’s married for crying aloud. Hey! Ross see which way he went.’’ I tried to look through the crowd. I don’t know he was there a minute ago,’’ said Alexandra. Hey! Someone left you this at the bar,’’ he said to pass you this message. I picked up the beige piece of paper and read it. The time will come and the darkness will unveil the path to blood. Suddenly I was aggravated at the message that was given to me. Wondering was it some sort rhetorical joke on my part because they knew me. Was it a message to tell me something I don’t know? Maybe it was a killer on the loose. Maybe I was going to be his next victim. I was aware of these things. I’ve seen enough CSI to no how it was going to end. With me dead. I took my drink from Kelsey’s hand. Kelsey did you get a look at him?’’ I asked her. No, Jeremy took the note while I waited on customers,’’ she said. Wow! Someone thinks you’re not a zombie after all.’’ He grinned. Ross do you think he’s still here?’’ No, he’s probably long gone from here by now.’’ Hoping it would take my mind off it. Then I looked over to my left as he walked away from the bar outside. Leaving in a hurry through the crowd. I followed him outside looking at him disappear altogether. Alex looked over to his table to see if was still looking at me. Haley he’s gone lets’ just go back inside and have fun.’’ You think I frighten him away?’’ I looked over to corner table where he was sitting. No, absolutely not.’’ Your fine it is his lost he did not leave a number for you,’’ he said. I smiled at her, and walked back inside the crowded bar. So did you catch the mystery man?’’ said Ross smiling. Ross just forget it, Alexandra warned him. What? I was just asking to see if she found prince charming,’’ he said. I didn’t catch him he left in a hurry.’’ I looked at the note that was giving to me Who was that?’’ asked Kelsey. I don’t know he seems strange,’’ Ross said. You guys I had enough fun for one night. I’m going to go head home.’’ Trying to fight back the sleep. You want me to take you, Haley?’’ Ross rising from his seat at the table to see me off. No, stay have fun. I’m just tired from working all night, and half of the day. Beside if I get some rest I want look like this zombie tomorrow.’’ Are you sure you want go Haley?’’ said Alex. Yes, I’m exhausted. I think I have made up for the time I missed the parties. I love you guys see you tomorrow Alex call me.’’ Haley be careful don’t talk to strangers.’’ Ross really.’’ Smiling and hugging him around his neck. His muscle- built arms lifted me up of the floor. After, Ross put me back on the floor. I hugged Alex, Kelsey. See you girls.’’ Then I went down the street toward the dark alley behind Bourbon Street. The moon filled the southern night. Lightening it up like a candle in a darkroom. My tired throbbing feet ached, and the seven inch ankle breaking heels was not doing me justice. Plus I looked hideous. Probably looked like a monster. I stuck my hand up in the air waving the yellow taxi cab down. I immediately open the door as I kicked of my heels. 9125 Fleur De Lis Lake Bayou,’’ I yawned. Okay’’ he turned on the meter a drove off toward the pitch black bayou road. All of the people were still partying and throwing beads and drinking. I was tired and ready to sleep my eyes couldn’t take much more of the festivities. So you’re leaving the party early Mardi gras wasn’t that boring was it?’’ The cab driver said to me. No, absolutely not just that I have been working all night on.’’ No, wonder you look dead,’’ he jokingly said at me. He must have been a comedian he talked, and joked about things all the way home. What was this dead joke from? Everyone thinks I’m a zombie from lack of sleep. Probably why the strange man didn’t approach me because my features resembles the dead. Maybe it’s the black clothing. Maybe Alex was right after all. No, not a zombie just haven’t gotten any sleep. As soon as I arrive home I will. The lights in one of the upstairs bedroom was still on. I could see it from the road. Well, I hope you get plenty of rest.’’ The cab driver drove down the dark curvy road. I could see the cypress trees, and moss hanging from them good tonight because of the moonlight. It was peaceful out here in the bayou one for miles down the road. He turned into the long drive way to the house that sat back of with the cypress trees line up on both sides of the drive. My black Mustang glisten in the moonlight as he pulled up to it. That’s a nice car,’’ his eyes on my car.’’ Yes, just got it for my birthday,’’ I said. Forty-seven dollars even,’’ he smiled kindly at me. I paid him, and gave him a tip for his kindness. Goodnight.’’ he waved to me. I reached in my small purse pulling out my set of house keys. To unlock the red door to the house. I twist the knob, and shoved the door open as I walked in the house. I hung the keys on the wall next to my father’s keys to his black 79’GTO Charger. As I walked in the living room grabbing the remote that sat on the round table in the middle of the floor. I turned on the T.V. to see what was on skipping through the channels, until I found a movie to watch. There was nothing on, but old black and white movies that my mother and I use to watch before she pass. We would stay up all night like to girlfriends on the sofa with popcorn and a blanket and two boxes of tissues. My father would be upstairs working on his cases. I cut off the T.V., and went upstairs to get ready for bed. I yawned under my breath. I found my favorite pajamas shorts, and shirt getting out of the black mini and throwing the heels in the closet. I walked back downstairs to go outside to the gazebo to relax under the stars and the moonlight. In the hammock that had a blanket placed inside of it from my previous time out heretic stretched out in the sling hammock listening to the waves beat against the side of the pier. While the sounds of the water soothe me. The warm spring air blew on my face as I drifted off into the deep unknown. It seem as if the dream from last night was revision itself. I was dreaming of my parent’s death again. The night they died, and the rain. Haley,’’ the sound of my mom sweet voice whispered softly to me. I woke up, and rub my head trying to shake the dream. But deep down it still was in the back of my mind. I sighed. Damn! Dream,’’ I moaned. As I was snapping out of the nightmare. I found myself still resting in the sling-hammock under the gazebo by the back deck. What was I thinking?’’ laying out here fallen asleep like that. In the pitch bayou anything could be out him waiting for to kill me. I sat up balancing my weight on the hammock. I twisted the back deck door to the kitchen to go in the house. I stop at the fridge to grab a bottle water. I finally made it upstairs. Slinging back the black comforter and sheets to get into bed. I turned out my lamp, and drifted off back to sleep.

    Heaven’s Crown

It can’t be.’’ Luke rubbed the side of his wan-face. His face filled with frustrations for what his visions was revealing to him. Why is it happening to me?’’ Then it was clear he was what thought he was. As the oath he so was taught to uphold. With his future undecided. And the realm in his unbeaten heart. Feeling disconnected from the immortality that he only ever known. But being the one makes that just as much harder. As Gabriel stood with his tousled black hair and his unearthly golden eyes. As he strolled gracefully to him. Then his deep voice ringed out. I’m afraid Luke is starting to experience what I was trying take away from him. I guess you can’t take the darkness out of what is naturally born to them,’’ God voice rumbled like thunder. Gabriel stood in front of the table. Yes, not of by choice.’’ You never told me about that night in New Orleans.’’ God couldn’t see what was happening, because of hell’s shifters. Gabriel sighed. Then left know knowledge of Luke, and his mother untold. That night when he got back. Gabriel pulled back the blanket from the child’s pallid face. The crimson eyed child sat up in Gabriel muscled bicep- arms. She wanted to give me what he taken from her,’’ he said. Taken what? said Gabriel concern. His deep heavenly voice ranged out. Her soul and dignity so she is giving you her first born son. She conceived herself with him while she was human.’’ What are you saying? That this newborn vampire child is a soul replacement.’’ Yes,’’ he said. He looked at the blood thirsty immortal child. And the name she calls him?’’ he said. He turned to him. She calls the immortal child, Luke,’’ said Gabriel. "Luke is
