About this ebook

The poems in this book vary in subject. Some recount the diffi cult and
dangerous experiences during their escape through Poland into Russia,
where he met and married my mother, Rose. Many describe the terrible
tragedies that transpired during the horrible holocaust, in which his
two sisters and brother were brutally murdered by the Nazi regime.
There are several poems which talk about nature, science, space and the
All-Mighty. Here the poet wrestles between different ideas, to decide
who is behind the creation and why was there a Holocaust, but a real
answer is not available. A number of his poems talk about his friends
and memorable fi gures from his past and history. Other poems depict
the hardships of old age, in all its forms, and the preciousness of youth,
which is lost and so envied. Yes, Borys is also a romantic, because there
are some nice poems which any young lady would have been pleased
to receive. A sad and special poem, A Pink Slip, describes how
my mothers breath of life was cruelly swept away by the establishment.

    IN MEMORY

This poetry book is in memory of my loving wife, Ruchla Rose Zinger, who like myself, was a victim of the Holocaust nightmare and torment from World War II. Yet, to add salt to my wounds, she lost her life from a heart attack in September 1989, a victim at the hands of the Lynn, Massachusetts Police Department. Rose died tragically at the tender age of 64. Her death was publicized in several North Shore, Massachusetts newspaper publications. My wife’s wrongful death legal case was heralded by several legal firms because it was denied an appeal by the United States Supreme Court after the initial court case, originally awarded on behalf of my wife’s trust was overturned since the City of Lynn appealed and strangely had the verdict overturned by a lower court in favor of the City of Lynn. It also has been reviewed regularly in many legal arenas for the case has had major Fourth Amendment implications with revisions.

I also write this book to all my three children, who have assisted me greatly in the publication, editing, and review of this poetry book: twin sons, Abraham and Bencion, and daughter, Rita.

This book is also especially written in honor of my mentor and father image and master teacher at the orphanage, Chaskiel Entenberg, whose tutelage taught values that I have treasured all my life.

Last, but solemnly, this book is written in memory of all my family members I lost at the hands of the Nazis in World War II; they are:

Mother: Rysia; born: 1880; died at 43 years old, Borys was 7

Father: Abraham Yitzchak Beer; born 1883

    Grandfather: Shlomola Lerner

    Sister: Rachael; born 1914

    Sister: Reisel; born 1918

    Brother: Hirsch: born 1920

In addition to my immediate family, I also lost at the hands of the Nazis, many relatives and friends, too many names to recall. All of them, including six million other innocent people, are chiseled in my heart with wounds that will never heal. This book is in memory to all of them.

    ACKNOWLEDMENTS

The acknowledgments to this poetry book, first of all have to be given top priority to the sincere assistance I received from the dedicated editing from the famous socialist and journalist, John C. Cort, from Nahant, Massachusetts. Jon was a dear friend of mine for almost four years until his untimely tragic death this past August 2006. Jon is well known for several publications; one in particular comes to mind is his book titled, Christian Socialism, and the other an autobiographical memoir titled, Dreadful Conversions. John Cort was very active in labor and civil rights and Catholic social movements. He was deeply and conscientiously involved with me in weekly conversations about a whole spectrum of subjects dealing with as follows: religion, spirituality, politics, war, love and hatred, joy and sorrow, Catholic concepts, Judaism, Jewish culture, Christianity, socialism, just to name a few. John helped as a volunteer to meet with me weekly for the Catholic Charities Organization and also was as a pioneer of the Catholic worker movement. In addition, Jon served several years in the Peace Corps. He was an amazing individual, physically and mentally, and we were only two years apart; he being, amazingly, my elder. He had many years experience as a journalist and with this background gave his spiritual-like scholarly experience in reviewing my work from an editing and poetry standpoint. I am humbly and deeply indebted to his unselfish and devoted assistance to the completion of my book.

The following insert in Italics was written about Jon Cort, written by Richard Griffin of Cambridge, a regularly featured columnist in the Community Newspaper Company publications, on October 6, 2004. The article references Jon serving as a Peace Corps administrator in the Philippines in 1962. These two latter facts are uncanny coincidences to my life and my poetry book. I immigrated to the United States in 1962. My poetry book titled, Reflections of a Tormented Haunting, has been published by Xlibris Publishing’s satellite location, located in the Philippines.

By reason of his qualities of character and intellect, John Cort deserves to be much better known. In a 2003 memoir titled Dreadful Conversions: The Making of a Catholic Socialist, he reveals himself to be a man dynamic in both youth and old age. Written as he neared 90, it recounts a colorful career full of dramatic events and memorable personalities.

Secondly, my family members, mainly my three children, have given me constant inspiration and encouragement. I am deeply indebted to my son Bencion Zinger. Bencion has spent an enormous amount of time making sure that the book was properly edited. Bencion monitored the entire layout and saw to it, that the manuscript was professionally handled with the publication specialists at Xlibris Publishing, the publishing company of my book. Bencion initiated the proper contractual agreements with Xlibris Publishing and has supervised a substantial portion of the complete publication of the book with the editing staff at Xlibris Publications. Bencion also contributed along with my assistance to this acknowledgment page, the in memory page, and the Foreword page.

Bencion’s twin brother, in Israel, my son, Abraham, was instrumental in the professional submission of all individual pages, including the poems, into digital format, significantly simplifying the final publication of the book. My son, Abraham, is also the author of the section titled, A Brief Biography of Borys, Dedicated to my Father, from a Proud Son.

My daughter, Rita Powers, who is employed in the human services area, was also of assistance, as well as her husband, Kenneth Powers, who runs a very reputable and renowned Substance Abuse, Domestic Abuse ( amongst many other human services ) half way house, in Lowell, Massachusetts, called the Lowell House. They set aside time in contributing their scrutiny of grammatical and text errors that they noticed. These errors were few and in between since most were carefully caught by the keen eyes of Jon C. Cort, mentioned above. However, Jon’s illness, brought Jon’s numerous gifted skills to a slow pronounced pace as he slowly was lost to all of us to the sovereign almighty. His loss has been absolutely devastating to all,
