Apart Type Screenplay - Everett C. Borders

    Latinos in Formation

Now that I have your attention, we well get to the point.

Before, this country we all call the United States of America, Indians occupied this north continent, including Canada and South America.

The truth is, as Indians were, murdered for land and mineral greed or whatever self-justification at that time, Mexicans/spawned by Europeans did in fact coexists with the Indians and did share some of the same faith.

As the arrival of Caucasians form Europe, indigenous people seemed more easily tolerated than Blacks and the Chinese. For whatever reason the Italians/ Portuguese seemed more familiar to the indigenous, at that time.

Non indigenous people were extremely exploited killed and degraded, as Hispanics did not suffer the same genocide. After centuries of attempted North American assimilation’s and de assimilation, forced segregation, exclusionist and republic filibusters of basic human rights, Hispanics, not like the Blacks and Indians, didn’t seem to be on the same path. Centuries of deliberated and intentional, lawmaking exclusionist, have failed the very same oppression tactics of that of blacks.

Fast forwarding to 2009, if you would believe in, media Rhetoric, false propaganda of Hispanics and scare tactics, you could believe that Hispanics are responsible for the rise in health care, auto insurance, crime rates, drugs traffic and a dozen other assorted damages to this country. They attempt to pit one group against another, reason being divide and attempt to conquer. Example, Blacks against Hispanics comparisons, the same history rational was attempted just before the civil war using Blacks to war against the Indians.

For decades, this country has been more European Immigration friendly. The always-political policy makers could not stop the influx of so many Latinos who make way to south of the United States borders daily. Hispanics have fought, bled, died and help build this great country just like everyone else.

Except for the Indians, Blacks and the Mexicans who truly have a deeper heritage than anyone here does & now, logically speaking, we all are from some other place.

If you are of the opinion of go back to Africa or go back to Mexico or what ever your irrational mentality conceits, then we should all go back to Africa, where we all ultimately originally came from.

There are some 320 Million people living the united States, Blacks are a significant fraction % of the U.S. Population, Hispanics significant fraction % are even more, so on and so on. They account for the majority of the United States population in this country as of 2010. This country is calculated to enviably become a place where liberty and justice will finally & truly be for us all.

Shaking his head from side to side in a discussing manner he pondered for a while before sitting back on the park bench. As time passed he then observed a priest walking by talking to three children. Thinking of an another news article he wrote,

    Church Array

Recently having the occasion of visiting several churches in the Chicago land area, several thoughts come to mind. The first visit was a church located on the near West Side of Chicago. While sitting and observing the Sunday service one couldn’t overlook the church politics that took place between the pastor and three of his young female con situates. Smiling, touching, whispering, promising future liaisons while attempting to woo the congregation on the side as he preached about love Thy enemies. As church service adjourned this writer watched the pastor get into his sixty thousand dollars Lincoln navigator and drive away with a young female church member leaving his wife at the church. Visiting the second cathedral located in downtown Chicago seemed very interesting, after attempting to sit through service observing the atmosphere, this writer was asked are you sure you are in the right place by one of the church parishioners. Attempting to blend into this milieu seemed very uncomfortable as church members seemed to shun this writer of social participation. Atonement was the topic of that Sunday’s itinerary and the cardinal seemed reluctant and unconvincing as he spouted to the church masses to atone for criminal acts of not tiding. At the conclusion of service this writer entered the parking lot area and couldn’t help being in awe of all the limousines, Rolls-Royces and expensive cars in the lot. Gentlemen adorned with two thousand dollar custom made suits, gold & diamond rings and ladies with Oscar de la renta dresses exited the cathedral still mesmerized by their own daily agenda so much that some had problems crossing the street. Touring the north shore this writer visited an Orthodox Church, its grand presents loomed over the area like a sentinel. As this writer entered the church it was apparent that this writers presence was disturbing to some church members. Attempting to socialize with some of the congregation was futile as members asked this writer the question, are you lost and do you know where you are. Emphasis was ceremonial, goblets, incense added to the atmospheric ambiance of the day’s activity. Pointing, whispering bickering as this writer attended the church service in observance seemed almost comical. As time passed, this writer attempted to mingle with church members, the conversation mostly stemmed around questions about where this writer lives and what my profession was. Some church members followed this writer outside after the service was over for what reason is not known.

They watched as this writer entered the car and drives away. Still on the north shore this writer visited a synagogue, the welcoming committee was magnificent as this writer was asked what are you doing here and are you here with someone?

Sitting down smiling, this writer attended the church service as the rabbi kept his eyes on this writer the entire time of the church service.

Stimulating conversations after church service stemmed on business affiliations, liaisons with the church and invitations to return in the near future. Receptive parishioners seemed more relaxed as this writer spoke of casual inquiry to future participation. Continuing the migration towards the south side of Chicago this writer visited a church with a very large congregation. The reverend preached a sermon about sin and lust. Church members shouted and yelled as the reverend excited the congregation to almost a fever pitch. Friendly church members received this writer as if he was an old friend and the general conversation was about day to day activities, children, work, and family life. Speaking to the reverend gave this writer a sense of religious sincerity that seemed different from most groups that this writer visited. Watching him receive and mingle with his congregation, expressions of caring and guidance came to mind. What started with a Sunday church service turned into an all day social with food, conversation? As this writer stood in the activities area watching children playing and parents planning for future events the reverend went from one family to another offering a sense of reassurance and religious reinforcement. Leaving that church was like leaving home with family and friends. The tour continued to a west suburban non-denominational setting. Entering the church gave a sense of welcome, inviting and smiling faces as group meditation, spiritual counseling and practical words to live by echo the church. Members of the church were very diverse dressing casually and low key. A female priest or pastor presided welcoming all new comers and members. Calm, serenity and

Getting in touch with ones inner strength seemed to flow as the Sunday service continued. While sitting at the Sunday service it suddenly occurred to me, this is what going to church is supposed to be about with diversity and smiling faces and spiritual enlightenment when you leave. At the conclusion of service the activities area at the church filled up with so many chatty people, food, kids playing and a general sense of harmonious good time. Final migration of the tour brought me to the south suburban area. Unwelcome faces stared and members reluctant to speak to this writer made attending church service abrasive. Sitting through the entire church service the message seemed to be lost and unclear as the priest spoke. The priest didn’t speak to any of the church congregation after the service and as the church emptied, small groups mingled in the parking lot, driving away, No conversation, no spiritual enlightenment, no smiling faces were observed. The total church visiting experience came down to several issues, you keep score.

    First issue,

Collectively why do people attend church?

    a. Get spiritual and moral guidance

    b. To feel a spiritual presence

    c. To socialize

    d. The need to be apart of something

    e. All of the above

    Second issue,

Should the concept of openness and diversity at all churches come to bear?

    a. There should be no diversity in churches

    b. People should stay with their own kind

    c. Some religions are better than others are

    d. If they want openness then they have to convert over to our religion

    e. Why cant we all worship together

    f. None of the above

    Third issue,

The issue of tiding seems to make some parishioners financially well to do

    a. When I tide the money goes to the church

    b. When I tide the money goes to god

    c. When I tide the money helps with the up keep and operations of the church

    d. Tiding is paying alms to the church

    e. Tiding is paying off my weekly sins

    f. Tiding pays for the car and lifestyle of the parishioners

    g. All the above

    h. None of the above

    Fourth issue,

Should the church help all the misfortunate, homeless, helpless?

    a. The church should only help the people in their circle or congregation

    b. No that, ís not the role of the church

    c. Yes with limitations

    d. Yes the church has the historical obligation to help all in need

    e. None of the above

    Fifth issue,

Should the church be involved in politics?

    a. No, there should be a separation between church and state

    b. Yes, the church should use that forum to influence members

    c. What difference does it make?

    e. None of the above

In summary, this writer visited churches at random all over the metro area, refraining from priority summations and opinionated statements this writer will make mention of the total concept of the Chicago metro area. Depending on who you are or what you are plays a key role in how you are received in this area.

Why do people go to church, is it to socialize, talk business, gossip, or get spiritual fulfillment. Why cant anyone visit any house of worship in this metro area without being shunned and ignored as well as members of the congregation being at risk of becoming potential victims of parishioners indiscretions? Visiting the many churches in the Chicago land area was quite an experience, one this writer will never forget.

The summer heat was so relaxing-le comfortable with the breeze that put him in another dozing drift. Nodding his head forward, he once again dreamed he is, transformed backwards in time, . . . it’s now the 14th century to be exact the year is now 1484 as Columbus, Ponce de Leon & Hernán Cortés is making Preparations to cross the Atlantic Ocean in route to Africa & the Americas.

1485-December 2, 1547) was a conquistador Cortes who led an expedition that caused the Conquest_of_the_Aztec_Empire"fall of the Aztec Empire

1492 Columbus arrived to North America with three ships loaded with slaves

Looking around he notices the old crew once again his brothers Harold, Gerald, his first cousins, Bob & York his other relatives, Luis & David. He hears a distant sound of long lost mercenary friends calling once again, Mac, Lawrence, Jerry, Martin & Cooper, Fleigman. In a frenzy of greetings & salutations the words, what are we doing here are never spoken. Mac, Lawrence, Martin, Cooper & Fleigman are the wrecking crew as Harold, Gerald, Bob & York Luis & David and Jerry are the technical aspects of deployment such as Piloting/munitions/power systems/computer targeting/mechanical.

They are all on a real nuclear aircraft carrier. The ship is 50 miles stationary off the West Coast of Portugal. The ship has attack choppers Gunships, personnel carrier choppers and F-18 Hornets & jump jets, with an over stocked complement of missiles & arms.

On active radar scanning the West Coast of Europe, an observation was made of several ships from, France, Spain, Britain, Germany, Dutch, Portugal, along with other countries

Attempting to leave on sea going voyage expeditions to Africa & the Americas.

As soon as the ships made sail they were sank while still in the harbor & warned never to venture west or south again. From the year 1484 till 1547 some three hundred ships were destroyed attempting to exploit/poison Continents & societies like Africa, Australia, North & South America, the whole of Asia, India, as well as the rest of the world.

His dreams are fast-forwarded to the year 2010 and the Continents & societies like Africa, Australia, North & South America, the whole of Asia, India, and surrounding islands are totally unequivocally unmolested to a world, pristine & flourishing, as it should be. Through out the whole of Europe, fierce maniacal infighting’s occurred as inbreeding conveyed even more chaotic in European mentalities.

Wisdom & goodness always seem vile to the vile as filth’s only savor but them selves.

He is still in the Dream State & dreams of forecasts,

    Evil aliens

If an extraterrestrial came to this planet, god helps them, if they arrive in the wrong country. From the Dutch to the British to the Italians to the French, From the Germans to the Russians and the Spain to the Portuguese. If all the above sound like Europeans, you are correct. From the initial migration of Caucasians from Europeans, a genocidal, cataclysmic rise and wave of violence has been historically recorded. The attempted over taking of Africa was not possible through force but by religion and missionaries and forced enslavement & disease. Mentality was to make friends and deceive. So was the same in India, South America, North America, and Australia. Every sector, every continent, of our human and non-human society has been infected with ideals and values, not of their own. Their intellectuals will say, we have made mankind better, more advanced, but have they. Look at what they have done on a global scale. Colonial infestation mentality has diseased and anguished this entire planet. They have killed tens of millions and infected many more with their twisted fantasies. History records that every where they go, death and pestilence follows.

Wide scale killing of whales, over fishing, indiscriminate killing of animals for sport, globally depleting of food & mineral supplies, the indenturing of others for personal gain. Lynching, murder, raping of the young, institutional racism, disease, cultural disfranchises, liberty and land disfranchises, when people are deprived of land, they are robbed of their basic liberties. Pollution and the degradation of natural resources,

Trashing of the oceans, seas, every land mass, lakes and fresh water systems, the pollution of ground water, air quality, strip mining, cutting timber, oil spills, the pollution and formation of space junk. Burying nuclear waste & Co2 gases, starving millions, ethnic cleansing, and global warming. Genetically enhanced germinal viruses, the irradiation and the altered behavior of pollinator, such as bees, plants and animals, cancer and aids.

The historical genocide that has plagued this planet has taken centuries, with always the same intent, greed and the need to oppress others different from themselves. No amount of intellectual, justification of what they have done can correct what has in fact, been done. Other scientist will agree that they are polluting the very same space they are attempting to explore. With limited knowledge of propulsion systems such as ion, and nuclear, they have already left trials of toxic debris through out this solar system. They are always searching and hoping to explore space & find new life forms to corrupt & pollute, not being mindful of, careful what you wish for. A couple of years ago, a news discovery reported from a lunar probe reported the collection of microbes beneath the surface. As predicted scientist dissected, studied and attempted to gain knowledge before discovering that the microbes were in fact from earth.

On March 28 2009, Russia announced a 105-Day virtual Mars Space simulation in Siberia, An all male crew made up of French and Russians Cosmonauts will prepare for the 2020 launch. This simulation will test the behavioral difference, the crew faces in a closed environment. After interviewing the male crew picked for the simulation, they expressed the distraction women would be and stress on the mission crew. Since all activity will be recorded for the duration of the simulation, a no privacy policy would implemented. There was no mention of the United States or China, in the Russian experiment for now. The United States is planning a similar project on the surfaces of the Moon. Soon these countries are sure to have their own plans for mars space exploration in the next ten years.

This is not a happy ending and there are no easy remedies. If by chance an extraterrestrial being were to arrive here from another planet, he or she or it, depending on where they arrive, people would attempt to exploit, steal, connive, and conquer. It is in their true nature, they are hard wired to be, poison, and they can’t help it. Never have so few done so much evil to so many. The truth is what it is, no matter whom it offends.

He dreamed of the forced displacement of blacks in the city of Chicago years ago, repelled from their homes to make way for expensive homes by the rich & greedy,

    DEATH OF THE HELPLESS

Eleven September 2000, I entered the Cabrini green project at Elm and Orleans’s street, I approached the buildings and observed four police officers towing cars in front of seward park. Three groups of men were standing by cars in the parking lot, and four to five young men guarded building entrances. Attempting to interview a woman who exited the building was futile; I don’t have a comment on nothing, leave me alone. Approaching the building, I was met by the local drug dealing advance guards that threaten and pulled weapons. Are you the police as they searched me. Walking away from the building, a beer can whisked by my head, a shot cracked the sky, a piece of the side walk exploded three feet in front of me as drug dealers, paranoid, followed me back to my car. The police were standing about one hundred feet away, as the shot rang out, but they just stood they’re watching. Arriving at 660 and 714 division buildings,

The greeting was not as suttle but just as hostile. Sheryl Thomas, 19 mother of three spoke about her current state of affairs. They told me that I don’t qualify for relocation because of an arrest I had when I was seventeen, I don’t have any place to go with my three kids. They say we need to qualify to be poor, they say we need to qualify for a better way of life, they say we need to qualify a better place to live, and the only thing we don’t need to qualify for is being homeless. Tomica Tate, 34 mother of four described her being forced to move as unfair and a plot to throw black families in the streets, "I don’t believe this, they are kicking poor black folks out and moving the rich whites in, what’s wrong with this picture. They ran a situation like this with the Jews didn’t they! I have nowhere to go, no job, no husband and no way to

Live, I guess that is what they wanted all along. Our people voted for this mayor and look at what he did,

We put him first and he placed us last." One community spokes person Mr. Michael Anofrieo, special counselor commented on his five-year experience and reasons for ethnic cleaning by the city of Chicago.

When asked what his thoughts were on why they were tearing down Cabrini green, he commented.

I think that Cabrini is located in a place that’s very desirable for developers, being on the near north side, the projects were a bad idea to build high rises and fill them with poor people. It’s a closed community and its 100% African American, so what you have is a segregated closed community with the urban poor. I think that it was a bad idea, and on some level, the city would love to have this land and make it more profitable for them. This area is under the control of the department of housing and urban development (federal government). IM not sure who actually own the land? People with a lot of political power know that the people of Cabrini typically don’t vote and don’t have money and have no political power. This land is walking distance to downtown, the lake, I think that they would like to develop it as lots of neighborhoods in Chicago are being gentrified and developed, another example of what’s happening in this city. Families are being relocated with section eight scattered sight their moving to the far west side and the south side and that’s what’s happening to them. I have been here for five years and I have seen the student population, especially the red projects being whittled down from eight hundred to five hundred. The residence are being relocated out which is not necessarily a bad idea, because as I said before, this high-rise didn’t work, the problem is nobody is dealing with the problems and the desfuctions of the residence. They are simply spreading them out in scattered site housing and moving them so that they are not stacked on top of each other. Nobody is actually dealing with any kind of follow up service with the families and what they need to succeed in a different neighborhood. Resources would be very beneficial as these families start to move. It’s certainly positive for the people who are going to be moving into the $500.000 town homes, its certainly positive for the business owners that come in, the Starbucks, the blockbuster, and the businesses. Primarily white people who are moving in to these neighborhoods, frankly its upper middle class to upper class families’ hat are able to afford the townhouses that are being built in this neighborhood. The residence of Cabrini who have been here for generations are now being thrown out, that can be looked at as good or bad. Bad because this is where they are from, this neighborhood is where they have grown up and now being forced to move whether they want to or not. With violence, drugs, and other negative thing that are here, I think that its going to be replicated where ever they go, you saw for yourself the problem trying just enter these buildings. Gang bangers are everywhere, selling drugs, and spreading crime, it is more easily recognized because it is in a concentrated area, the gangs are running the buildings, just look for yourself. Twana Johnson, 30 mother of four, speaks out. I lived in the projects for 30 years, in my opinion they are making us move because we are close to the lake front and they wanted this area, the gold coast area. It’s a good question, where am I going from here; IM waiting on relocation to one of the new houses they are building now. I had to qualify for relocation, and IM still going through a process, if I had a teenage son with any kind of criminal record or background, then that’s disqualification. The people who are not qualified don’t get relocated, they are just out their, they become homeless. What ever you can afford, you go with, what ever you can’t afford, your just out they’re in the streets.

Shiller grade school located in the heart of Cabrini greens projects, teachers and school counselors commented on the complexion of the school Vs the community.

    Voices from the streets

Touring Chicago City and suburban streets, business professionals to streetwalkers, from homemakers to cab drivers comment on perspectives that we do not dare hear about or mention everyday. The following comments are people from all lifestyles who have something to say about everything. Speaking to people at random conveys a cross-reference of ideas, interactions, and frustrations that at one time may trouble many of these cities diverse residences. Traveling to east Rogers Park area, Carla D., a 20-year-old Caucasian office worker comments on men. So what if I wear my skirt short, men don’t need to stare at me or make comments at me when I go to work. Guys are all the same, they all want to get what they can and leave. My boyfriend and I had a fight last week over a guy he accused me of flirting with in the park; I tried to make it up with him with a surprise visit last night. When I got to his condo, I heard a women’s voice laughing, that creep cheated on me the first chance he got, you men are all the same. Asking Carla if she knew for sure that her boyfriend was cheating, she replied I heard a women’s voice in his house, which’s proof enough for me. The problem with men is they have no feelings, I am still looking for a real man. Carla gave her definition of what a real man was. A real man wont cheat on you, a real man will take care of his women and keep her happy, a real man would do all the things I want to do, like going shopping with me. Men and women are very different I guess, that’s why guys so are so different from women." Carla seeks a reply from all that are interested. Traveling to Chicago’s downtown area, Scott J. a 27 year old Caucasian rock musician comments on his concerns. Rump rangers and women who like pie in the face are stinking up the Chicago’s downtown area. Every time I go to a public function I have to look at those people carrying on in public, no one wants to look at that filth. A woman at a club told me that those people are the same as every body else, they just have different sexual tastes. So be it if abnormal is different sexual tastes, I do not want it in my face. I keep hearing that its nothing wrong about being strange from the strange. They want to play with each other; they should do it at home. For centuries the maladjusted, the mental defectives in formation have attempted to impose their twisted ideas on the masses for their own perverted gratification. Men and women, male and female were made opposite for a reason, no other species of plant or animal engage in abnormal activities unless they are abnormal! Scoot spoke of his personal intolerance of non-hedrosexuals, and when asked if his intolerance was due to some personal experience, Scott stated, "no. I just don’t like those people nor do I want those people around me. Talking to Rhaeed A. O. a 32 year old Pakistan cab driver that lives in Bellwood ill, Rhaeed spoke about his involvement with blacks." I have been robbed five times by the black ones. The first time they beat me and took my cab, the second time a black one ran away from my cab without paying the fare. I have nothing against anybody but I keep being robbed, not by the whites but the blacks, I just want to drive my cab. When I came to this country, I couldn’t speak English and had no money. I worked and saved and now I have my own cab, everybody has the chance to succeed in life, even the black ones. Stealing from the poor is very stupid and foolish, some people ask me why I don’t pickup the black ones, and the reason is obvious. I will never pick up another black one in this cab.

I have the right to be safe when I drive cab; I have nothing against any body especially the black ones but I have been robbed five times by the same people and IM not going to get robbed again.

Peter J. a 35-year-old Caucasian painter from Berwyn ill. Shares his thoughts, "trying to meet a good women these days is almost impossible. I have met women in libraries, super markets, and nightclubs and in restaurants, the only place that I have not met good women is in a church. Meeting women in nightclubs is a farce; people lie, and put on masks, ulterior motives are distorted, as drinking becomes excessive. Good women do not frequent bars and taverns; women who do are looking for love in all the wrong places. Meeting women in libraries and stores is somewhat intrusive, how do you attempt to meet someone while their trying to shop or read a book. Dating services are for losers and meeting people on the Internet and classifieds are a nightmare. Where can a nice guy meet nice women now days. Narcisco V. a 34-year unemployed Hispanic custodian from Maywood ill he is bothered by the traditional red tape as he calls it. "I lost my job and got thrown out of my apartment cause I could not pay the rent, I have been homeless for one month. My driver’s license came up for renewal last week and they wouldn’t renew my driver’s license because I did not have an address, my insurance would not insure a homeless person with no address. Without a drivers license, I cant drive and if I cant drive and cant get insurance, what am I to do. Sleeping in my car and scrounging for food, I have always been law abiding and it is the law that puts me in a position to break it. I have talked to city and state officials who were very unsympathetic to the needs of the misfortunate. I will just continue looking for opportunity, hopefully before winter I will have found work or something, cause nobody cares about the homeless, anybody. Charles S. a 29-year-old black handyman who lives in the city projects. Charles conveyed the atmosphere in the Jetts, as he calls it.

"I was born here in the Jetts, now the mayor along with his buddies are going to tear down all the projects to make room for expensive condos and housing. What happens to people like us, ill tell you, we are becoming Chicago’s refugees and nomads, thousands of us are wondering all over the state trying to find places to live with our families. Don’t be disillusioned with the mayors relocation program, many residence of the projects are becoming homeless and put out into the streets, families are being disbanded and forced to live with relatives. Many are turned away when they attempt to relocate to the suburbs; the suburban premise is that most wont take section eight housing and the ones that do have other methods of weeding out people trying to find a decent place to live. The city of Chicago gets on the news and purports about positive change but in reality, they are only stuffing their pockets from our misery. One big example is the Cabrini green projects, prime real-estate value for a any development corporation, a plan by the mayor was to tear down the area and to gives his friends the redevelopment contracts of cabrini. The federal government owns the land that the projects sit on and the redevelopment only benefits the contractors and who ever they paid off to start genocide on the project inhabitants. Convenient transportation, trains, buses, easy access to the downtown area, is what the inhabitants of the projects coveted; they didn’t have much else. People are being pushed out of the only home they ever knew, and thrown on the streets, don’t let anybody tell you different. Like father like son, the father’s plan was to place all the minorities in pockets all over the city and keep them segregated.

He built all the high rise projects in Chicago, now his son is tearing them all down, throwing thousands out on the streets for his own greedy personal gain. This is moral genocide because the poor have no place to go or hope to get affordable housing."

Voices from the streets is an ongoing quest for the general public to express opinions and thoughts that are not necessary the opinions of this writer or publication. Views expressed are from people around the Chicago metro area who have personal opinions to express to the public.

11-what activities do Oak Park river forest offer after school

Any further comment you would like to make to kids, parents, the community, and schools?

    Aha, sanctuary

At least for some two million kids all over the Chicago metro area the library seems like sanctuary,

Lets look at the reality of this paradox

Grade school kids to high school seniors frequent the library system daily.

The concept of unsupervised grade and high school kids to mingle would never happen in any other setting other than in this environment. The school systems go to great lengths to separate kids by grades. A recreational atmosphere would never socially allow grade school & high school kids to mix and socialize unsupervised in such a large forum.

As you enter any library in the United States, city metro area after school, you will observe the social political systems of the class or clicks system that has been established since the 1960s

The high school juniors & seniors are top pecking order; they sit where they want. They dictate the tempo and mood of the library social climate,

Southmores & freshmen humble themselves to juniors & seniors and the upper grade kids socially correct the grade school kids, socially it’s a constant push & tug situation that seems to create a since of harmony among all kids as long as the line is not crossed.

Crossing the forbidden line of library social harmony can be breached by merely sitting at some ones else table. The out side library crowd adheres to the same rules as the inside atmosphere, high school clicks tend to socialize together as well as grade school kids even though the social intermix of grade difference may appear harmonious at times.

I worked at the Chicago public library systems in the 80s, at that time the system had problems with thefts, gangs, graffiti, drugs and kids with out of control behavior. Gangs would enter the library to attempt to recruit new members, sell drugs & extort patrons. The library rest rooms would play host to extortion, drug deals and god knows what else.

Although the adult library staff is quite capable of removing unwanted kids, they are too busy checking out books helping student’s research and checking in books, their role is to assist patrons & student with library information not to play police and baby-sit.

In the 80s the police would go from one library branch to another removing disruptive patrons and kids in turn the daily task helped many students and patrons with much needed library information study time.

Year 2000 we observe the climate at the suburban library systems, it is apparent that conditions has changed very little. The same conditions still exist in the suburbs as well as the city of Chicago, bathroom deals, inside and outside social order and the obvious frustration with the library staff to effectively assist the public in what it was intended for. Speaking with some twenty student/patrons in Melrose Park who indicated to me we go to the library to meet & socialize with our friends and to meet new friends, our parents seemed to encourage it . Parents may know where their kids are, they may not know what their kids are, example, a parent tells a child, after school ill pick you up at the library, from 3:00pm till 630pm that child is virtually alone except being apart of a crowd.

Do you know what your kid is doing at the library?

Do you know if your child is has homework and if so is it being done at the library?

Do you know your child’s friends or friends that you would rather your child not to associate with?

Do you know if your child is a victim or troublemaker at the library?

If no is your answer to all four questions as a parent you need to know!

Interviewing ten students/library patrons in river forest ill. Interesting topics arose, it seems that after school venting by students at the library is a part of after school activities and frequently is out of control. This is a national problem that exists in every system. Hosting so many children into the library mix at one time without the proper adult supervision is a definite strain on library staff and the systems it was meant to serve. Is it wrong for parents to leave their children at the library?

The library is not in the business of baby-sitting your children.

We as parents think that the library is a part of your child’s school educational system and in thinking so are your children getting continued education with out supervision?

School systems are traditional places to learn by structure with supervision in place the learning process has proven to work. The library system is meant to assist in the learning process with no virtual supervision nor the sufficient trained staff to help in the supervision process.

Adolescents in an unsupervised atmosphere after sitting in a school day being told what to do, how to do it when to do it will vent. Children who have conduct problems in school are even more of a problem in libraries without the proper adult supervision. In any library look at what you have, a librarian and maybe two clerks and on any given school day from two hundred to six hundred kids merge and descend on the local library after school.

What do parents say about the current state of the suburban library system?

Speaking to Mr. Pierce, a resident of Maywood he states I work all day while my son attends school. I don’t have time to spend with my son after school so I tell to go to the library. He is in an atmosphere to do his homework and study in a safe place to keep out of trouble, what’s wrong with that.

Another parents from Melrose Park miss s Wong commented that what better place for children to attend after school than the library.

Community centers and after school programs offer promise to deflect the problematic presence of problem patrons but parent participation and a more frequent police presence offer even more of a positive atmosphere in the attempted study process of so many deserving youth. Commenting from the police perspective from Melrose Park, Maywood, Oak Park, river forest and city of Chicago. Officers have reported that only a hand full of kids/patrons is chronic problems in each library area and the attempt to remove them can be highly successful. Cooperation of the community and a no tolerance policy with problematic library patrons can do much in curbing after school problems that exist in most libraries branches.

Commenting is an Oak Park homeowner who has had problems with kids whom frequent the library at Oak Park and Lake Street some of these kid are ok, they don’t bother anything and use the library but some kids hang around, cause trouble, steal and smoke near my house.

Another River Forest resident commented about kids standing all over the library lawn throwing trash & being loud. Clearly there are some issues of concerns of students, adult residents, and library staff.

From a student/patron perspective some fifty students/patrons made the general statement we have no other place to socialize, the kids who cause problems at the library don’t even live around here and the trouble makers from our schools should be kicked out if their causing problems.

Asking children if homework and study research was being done, student/patrons stated yes some of us do our home work at the library if we need to but most of us do our home work at school and at home.

When asking kids about venting around the library area, 98% of student/patrons stated why cant we do what we want, we are not doing anything wrong, just talking to your friends before we go home

Reported by some library staff through out the metro area, kids cause trouble, they trash the floors, the outside area, bathrooms, they turn the library into a restaurant, they scream, shout during library hours disturbing other patrons, they fight and spit on the floor, run and disrespectful to library staff.

Clearly if effective school programs can be implemented then after school programs should be equally just effective with the library system. The city counsel, police, parents, and the community should address perpetual problems with youth at the library. The proper adult supervision and increased library personnel trained to cover peak hours might be one way to address the adult to child ratio. Random police presence may help to curb some youthful mischief and increased parent and community participation should shore up any residual problems that may exists. After school programs such as the YMCA, boy and girl scouts and the various community centers offer children a variety of after school activity and positive socialization that they crave. While monitoring the situation at one of the metro library branches, observed was a child approximately seven years old who was left after library hours. Speaking to the child on the library steps she indicated my parent are late as usual. Two hours passed and the parent eventually picked up the child. The parent refused to speak to this writer about the situation and hurried away with the child.

    Speaking about what ifs

What if the child got lost, what if the child got taken by a stranger, for some reason what if the parent fail to pickup the child, what if the child got in some sort of trouble?

Passing judgement on a parent is wrong but parents have the ultimate responsibility to maximize the safety for their children after school, to and from home. As a parent you have the moral, legal, common sense responsibility to guide, and protect your child and surround them with an atmosphere that is most conducive to learning and safe conditions.

    Interviewing James Madigan assistant director

Oak Park public library at 834 Lake Street, Oak Park ill 60301.

"Close to one hundred kids merge at this library after school. The problem ages are the 7th and 8th grade kids on average 13th &14th years old. There has been a problem with youth after school for five or six years. An identifiable group of kids who have no where to go and nothing else to do are the latchkey kids; they hang out at the library everyday for hours. I think that it’s unfair to the kids and unfair to the library. Parents should identify two or three activities that your child should be in so your child is not at the library ever day hanging out. What happens is kids who have to be at the library because they have no where to go, after a times get resentful and frustrated because they have to be there. Generally Mondays and Wednesday are our peak or worst days with problematic kids. We have problems with kids attempting to cut class while school is in session and we address it with confrontation and the police. We get a visit from the police everyday because the officers walking beat in this area; we offer the police a desk for doing reports and phone. I would like to see grade schools to issue identification cards to the student/patron to allow them to be more identifiable. The purpose of ID card is to assist schoolteachers and the library to identify problematic kids and address it quickly. Kids give false names and lie often. After school programs are with the schools.

I would like to see the parents to come into the library more often and see their children. I would like kids to be more respectful in fact many are. Troublemakers are less than 10% and this library is well-used library. There are many after school programs, the bottom line is they all require a fee to attend and the library doesn’t, the library is safe. Usually you can set your watch by the adults who use the library, at quarter to three, the adults who have know when the kids are going to be arriving leave. Its like they surrender the library to the young people. We are planning to build a new public library soon to assist patrons in this community".

Librarian Jill Bambeneck has a home work help program. It is funded by the LSTA grant she received from the Illinois Secretary of State Office. The grant provides tutors for teens at Oak Park public Library. Teenaged students who need a little extra help with their homework will now find experience tutors at all three Oak Park public library sites. At the main library, a tutor will be available Monday through Thursday afternoons after school, Monday and Wednesday evenings and on selected Saturdays. At Maze Branch, a tutor will be present on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Monday evenings and selected Saturdays. At Dole Branch, the tutor schedule will be set soon. During the summer, one tutor will be available at the Main Library.

    Interviewing Patrick v. Italia director

Melrose Park public library 801 Broadway Melrose Park ill 60160

Visiting this library, I was very impressed with the pristine conditions and sense of structure that the atmosphere offered. Speaking to Mr. Italia,

We seat 54 kids at this library, we do have a police officer supplied by the Melrose police department and just his presence keeps the kids in line. The elementary school has increased at leased 30% to 40 % and they use the library more frequently. Parents don’t spend enough time with their children. Children’s being left at the library has happened between the ages of seven years old to ten years old. We are lucky we have not turned a child an over to the police yet. We have about 80% of children coming to the library to do work and the rest come to socialize. The fact is, we are open to the entire public not just the children. We have a youth commission to handle after school programs and church programs but the other program charges money for programs and the library does not. We are limited in our resources and in how much we can help and we do as much as we can. We are here to serve the whole community, Parents should be aware that we serve homeless people and the mentally challenged. Just because the library is a safe place does not guarantee your child is safe.

    Interviewing Carol Clover Reference librarian

Maywood public library 121 s, 5th Ave Maywood ill 60153

The library is very striking in appearance with a huge spiral stairwell in the middle the building. The new building offers space and friendly helpful library staff to assist you on every floor. Speaking to Miss Clover,

In this reference section we get between forty and fifty kids in this library after school. Grade school and high school have problematic kids who frequent the library, we have security, we have kids who attempt to cut class by hanging out at the library. Police officers frequent the library everyday, gang activities exist here and the common boy girl issues, teasing back and forth, typical teenage stuff. We handle difficult kids with security and police.

    Interviewing Stan Huntington

Maywood public library 121 s. 5th Ave. Maywood ill 60153

"Occasionally a parent would leave a child at the library after hours, forth or fifth grade 8,9,10 year old. I can remember situations where we had to take the child to the police station because the parent never showed up. Most students as an extension of the school system view the library. One of the bigger complaints from teachers is that they don’t really get the support from the parents, or they make a complaint to the parents and it never gets a follow up response. Here
