Sarah Millers surgery is not going well and she needs blood. However, she has given her doctor written instructions not to give her blood because she is a Jehovahs Witness. He briefly interrupts the surgery to ask her children gathered there if they will override her instructions. Because without blood, she will die.
A few weeks later one of Sarahs sons tells his family that he has Aids. They will have to care for him because he is single. Members of the family describe how they simultaneously coped with these two crises. Sarah describes the death of her mother when she was a young child and her fathers unsuccessful attempts to keep her and her young brother together. Also, her marriage to Ralph Miller and her life after his death.
