About this ebook

This book contains a collection of 128 poems/verses, along with one skit, about
a variety of rare, threatened, endangered and extinct species of Africa and Europe.
Over fifty of the mammals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and sea creatures
are illustrated. Through use of humor and pathos, as well as a variety of poetic
structures, the author will engage the young and not-so-young, as they discover their
role in helping wildlife from these continents. You'll want to laugh with the hyena,
cry with the quagga, and say "aye" to the aye-aye.

These poems are best enjoyed when read aloud in an enthusiastic manner. If your
enthusiam takes the form of positive action, her primary objective will have been
accomplished.

    Bibliography

    Acknowledgements and Contributions

Family, friends, and co-workers have been most encouraging as I assembled the material for this volume. I wish to thank my various artists for their skill and dedication. Amphibians, reptiles, some mammals and birds were sketched by Herbert Park; and some mammals, insects, and birds by colleague/art teacher, Sheryl Matties. Herbert Park made the cover.

The following high school students from my district drew additional birds and mammals: Brendan Wilcox, Dayna Menken, Mary Kate Collier, Jake Turner. Teacher, Carol Socks-Parker co-ordinated the effort.

Our building’s computer technician, Robert C. Starr, and his wife, Lenore Hiscoe, made the maps of Madagascar.

To my principal, Karen Jacobson; and Community Relations Director, Judy Evola; many thanks for all the publicity you gave me on the first book and for your encouragement as I worked on this volume.

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to the Beluga whale,

also known as a white whale,

once abundant in the Atlantic Ocean

on both the North American and European sides. Their numbers have decreased

drastically in recent decades due to

pollution. Many of them are now plagued

with cancer. The prognosis for their

recovery in health and population is slim.

My first poem Time’s Up, has a double

entendre. Time is nearly up for these

    marvelous creatures whose vocalization skills

are among the best of any mammals on earth.

The psychologist in the poem also declares,

Time’s up, to his patient, symbolizing the

half-hearted effort we often put into doing

    something meaningful for these and

other creatures who suffer due to

    our neglect and insensitivity.

    —Dawn
