    Dedication

Children of the light is dedicated to my two children of the light, Heather and Steven, who are keeping the flame of faith alive and are passing the torch to the grandchildren. This book can be used as a family devotion. There are sixteen parts to the story and sixteen lessons with questions, activities, and a prayer to go with the story. It’s a very important habit for families to spend time learning God’s word together in a fun and creative way. I thank you, Mom and Dad, for teaching me and leading me to Jesus at a young age. I also thank my loving husband Michael for all his support with this book.

I also dedicate this book to my fellow Sunday school teachers, children’s church leaders, and home-school moms and dads, who work hard and pray hard to make a difference in children’s lives. This book can be used as a sixteen-week curriculum that gives students a great foundation and a desire for a real relationship with Jesus. As the students go on this adventure with Cole and Ember, they will memorize key scriptures to hide in their hearts. They will learn the character of God, the Ten Commandments, steps to salvation, and the armor of God.

The Children of the Light story is dedicated to orphans worldwide who are searching for something more to this life. I pray they find purpose and meaning in Jesus. A portion of the funds from this book is going to Make Way Partners Orphanage in Sudan. Jesus said in Matthew 19:14, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.

    Chapter 1

    A DARK WORLD

Lesson 1: A Wish for Something More

T he boy with curly red hair stared wide-eyed in amazement at the inviting picture in the hallway. It was a beautiful picture of a fresh, green garden paradise. An endless waterfall flowed into a river as clear as crystal, swimming with life. Trees loaded with delicious fruit lined the water’s edge. A rainbow of flowers bloomed, and there were all kinds of friendly creatures everywhere. Birds glided carefree above the treetops. Powerful rays of light shone down a warm, loving presence that was bigger than us all. The boy wanted to jump magically into that picture of beauty and peace. However, his daydream was interrupted by the sweet voice of his younger sister, Ember.

Come on, Cole. It’s our turn now.

He looked up to see that the long line of sad orphans, waiting to see old Doc Hobby, had shrunk down. They were used to waiting since there were fifteen of them at the North Country Orphanage. It was summer, and they had a break from school, but this trip was no picnic.

How are the Livingston children today? asked old Doc Hobby, holding a long needle in his shaky hand. Cole looked down at the blisters on his hands, hoping Doc would notice and care since he had no parents to comfort him. Instead, Doc just asked, Well, who’s first?

Cole bravely said, Me, I guess.

He did his best to hold back the tears. Then it was Ember’s turn, and tears streamed down her freckled cheeks at the sight of the needle. Why do we have to have shots anyway? Cole muttered in anger as his red, freckled face matched both the gingers’ hair. Cole took her by the hand and sadly said, It will be okay, sissy. Let’s go.

As they walked down the hall, hand in hand, he secretly wished in his heart to run away and take Ember to the beautiful river and garden paradise in the picture. There they would be happy beyond their wildest dreams! Cole then felt as if a warm, powerful presence was watching over them. A voice of truth whispered,
