    Chapter One

Rachel Jacobs parked her Bonneville in the only spare space outside the Sandbox and looked around with distaste. The parking lot outside the converted warehouse stank of beer, piss, sweat, and musk—all the scents she expected from a shifter-run fight club. Graffiti covered the walls of the red brick building—gang tags, MC colors, and badly spelled obscenities. The low thud of heavy bass music pumped through the walls. There was nothing here she hadn’t seen before. It was the knowledge of what, or rather who, waited inside the warehouse that made her edgy.

Still, she’d ridden hard and fast to get here, picking up several points on her license along the way. Fired by desperation and despair, she’d followed rumor and gossip and finally found this place. The Sandbox. The most notorious shifter club in the county, maybe even in the country. Drugs, sex, fights, you name it, you could get it in the Sandbox. For a price.

Rachel pulled off her helmet and shook out her hair. Her ash-blonde locks clung limply to her head after hours under the helmet, and she spared a second to wish she had time to primp herself a little. She wanted to look good tonight. Hell, she wanted to look fucking amazing, and the helmet-hair just didn’t cut it. Her biking leathers and the natural aura a prime female werewolf threw off would go a long way though. She’d just have to hope it would be enough.

She took a quick swig from her hip flask for Dutch courage. The whiskey sent flames through her body, chasing away some of her nerves. As ready as she’d ever be, she stalked up to the doors of the club and flung them open.

A wall of heat, sounds, and smells hit her. The music that had been just audible out in the parking lot was an assault on her ears now. The swirling scents of blood, sweat, and animals overwhelmed her. Men roared, laughed, and howled. She heard the smack of fists hitting faces, the crunch of bones breaking. Pure aggression, pure adrenaline. She could taste it, and the promise of violence and blood woke her wolf. She felt the beast stir inside her, ready and eager to play, and that gave Rachel the last burst of confidence she needed.

She strode inside the Sandbox, taking in the cages where men in various states of transformation fought with a savagery they could never have shown in the human world. Spectators gathered around the cages, yelling encouragement or jeering insults. Past the rows of cages were a bar and a few pool tables. All were just as packed as the area around the cages. Nobody gave Rachel a second look as she muscled her way to the bar.
