About this ebook

It's September of 1960 and the start of your senior year in high school. Your name is Carlton Fickland, and you've just been startled awake by a gruesome nightmare. In the dream, you see a horrific accident that ends the lives of two perfectly beautiful young people and puts a third into a catatonic state. It is the third victim's screaming that catapults you from slumber. Like all other dreams, the memory of this one starts to fade quickly. Although its details soon dissolve, its impact on your life does not. You experience other dreams that are somehow tied to the first one, but are only of an old, white-haired man. Those dreams occur whenever you are at life's crossroads where the direction to proceed isn't clear. The directions suggested in the dreams form your reality and lead to a future that others can only fantasize. Then everything begins to unravel until you reach an end that no one could ever have seen coming. This psychological thriller is filled with surprising events that will have you, the reader, wanting to turn just one more page. When you reach the end, you will again read the last few pages just to savor the unexpected climax.

All of my life I have wanted to be a writer, I just didn't always know it. Truthfully, I'm actually a storyteller and I've always known that. The problem has been that I haven't always known how to merge the two; storytelling and writing. As a child, like most children, saying I wanted to be a writer was tantamount to saying that I would enjoy having everyone in my school come up and individually smack me with a rubber chicken. Since that wasn't going to happen, I never thought about ever saying it. Likewise, when teachers asked us individually what we wished to be when we reached the age that we could be something other than a dependent on a parent's tax return, saying I wanted to be a storyteller was equivalent to volunteering for after- school detention for twelve straight years. Since that wasn't going to happen either, that was also left unsaid. But, I thought about it. I just didn't know what to do about it. So, when I graduated from high school, I didn't know what to study at university. Oh, I tried, but not very hard. Consequently, I wasn't very successful. I joined the Navy and since they don't have a job description for storytelling, they taught me electronics. When I got out of the Navy, I took that foundation to the next level and earned a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. For the next forty-five years I made a career around computer science...and hated every minute of it. That's because I really wanted to write stories. And now I'm doing it. My published works prove that I'm doing it. I hope you like any or all of them. If not, please don't hit me with a rubber chicken.
