I dedicate this book to the memory of my Father, Patrick Angelo Davis, and to my sister Arci Victoria Davis. If it weren’t for Pat naming you Arci, there would be no Arci Darci. We love and miss you dearly, Pat. And to my mama, Aridell Davis, I did it! I finally finished something. I hope I made you proud.

    About the Author

    Creek Valley

I’m coming around with your packets, everyone, said Ms. Nibbit. Do not turn your papers over until I say so. We will go over the words together.

UGH, why can’t today be Friday? Arci thought as she sat at her desk anxiously waiting for her teacher to bring over her word list. Arci didn’t like Mondays very much because Mondays meant that her third-grade class got a new list of spelling words and vocabulary words that they had to have memorized by Friday.

    Annoyed

I wonder what gigantic word is going to be on the list this week. Heeeey, gigantic! That word was on my spelling list last week. I think teachers give us these words so we can use them to sound all smart and stuff in real life.

Ms. Nibbit walked over to Arci and placed Arci’s paper with the words facedown. Arci dared to look. She turned her paper over quickly, forgetting all about Ms. Nibbit’s instructions.

Seriously? Arci blurted out. I can have these bad boys memorized by the end of class.

Ms. Darci! Ms. Nibbit yelled as she stopped handing out papers. I specifically said not to turn your paper over until I say so.

Sorry, Ms. Nibbit, Arci said while slumping down in her seat and hiding her face with her word packet.

Now, class, said Ms. Nibbit, let's begin going over our words together. You may turn over your papers.

Arci looked over her word list while Ms. Nibbit called the words out to the class. Arci followed along, trying to memorize each word on her own.

Clap, land, stand, stamp, snack, rack, ground, found, flock, click, house, south, soil, lift, house, stuck, drop, anthill, desk, glad. She read the words silently to herself. Man, some of these kids must have really done terribly on their test last week, she thought. These words are too easy.

When Arci finished reading the words on her spelling list, she began looking over her vocabulary list without waiting to follow along with Ms. Nibbit and her class. She came across one word that stood out to her.

Extraordinary: Going beyond what is usual, regular, or customary. That sounds just like me, she thought.

When Arci finished reading over her vocabulary words, she focused on the word extraordinary and wanted to learn the definition right away.

I should show Ms. Nibbit that I learned one of my words already.

Raising her hand up in the air, Arci tried to get Ms. Nibbit’s attention.

    "Ms. Nibbit, Ms.
