Jose and El Cinco De Mayo

A Creative Nonfiction Story of a Young Boy from ‘Old Mexico’

Jose had not a clue what was going on, but his mother did. The mother did not have the heart to tell Jose that on this day in May 1862, his father would have to leave home to defend their state of Puebla, Mexico from conquer by French Military Forces. Jose was small boy, age seven, who loved his father dearly.

His mother swept the dusty floor of their adobe hut and took a glance at her son in peaceful dreams. It was painful to know she would soon need to awake him to say good-bye to his father. It would come as a complete shock to him.

His father came over and gently laid his hand on his mother’s shoulder.

Isabella, wake Jose, he whispered. I must leave soon for The Pass of Las Cumbres. That is where Ignacio Zaragoza has stationed us.
