About this ebook

They stole the whole herd...

It's a such hot summer on the prairie, even the grasshoppers are feeling lazy. But then Camden discovers that his family's entire herd of cattle is missing.
With Pa gone off to town and Ma shy of horseback, it's up to Camden to find out where all the cattle went before they're lost forever.
But what he discovers might be more than a twelve-year-old kid can handle. Then again, he's ... Kid Camden.

    I

Camden had no idea what would happen when he got up that morning and did his chores, watering the Bessie the sow and feeding Rowdy the horse, little knowing his whole world would change by this time tomorrow.

Over a breakfast of thick-cut bacon, corn bread, and coffee, his pa told him, I need to take the wagon to town for some supplies. I’ll be back by supper time. You take Rowdy out to the east pasture and bring the herd home and put them in the corral. Tomorrow, we’re going to work the calves, bright and early before it gets hot.

Camden’s chest swelled. Sure, pa! He’d never been entrusted with such an important job before, but he was sure he could do it.

Rowdy was a good cattle horse, in spite of his name, which he got on account of bucking off Ma the first time she tried to ride him. They all figured it was her dress skirt fluttering in the wind that spooked ol’ Rowdy. She was pretty sore about it and took to calling him Ol’ Glue.

Across the breakfast table, Evan piped up. I wanna help, too!

Me, too! Preston said, his mouth full of corn bread.

You’re too little, Camden said, which was true. Their legs were too short to reach the stirrups. Evan stuck his tongue out. Oh, lookit you, all swolled up like a tick.

Preston crossed his arms with a scowl and a humph, but neither Ma nor Pa said anything contrary. Little brothers were the most aggravating thing ever.
