Special Note to Parents and Students Alike
Please note that we have special coded areas that will assist students and parents in determining how you might use this book as a learning tool for yourself and/or your teen.
Questions and reference materials are in bold. The questions, we believe, will encourage your teen to give his/her opinion, as well as open up a line of communication between you and your teen. For the person who is reading this book on their own, stop on bold-text items, think about the question, and analyze for yourself what you believe would be your best opinion on the topic. In the back of the book, you will find a page called worksheet
to copy as a guide for drug and alcohol study. This study sheet can be used as a reference sheet to help remember the subject’s information.
INTRODUCTION
THIS IS OUR PROMISE TO YOU. WE WILL BE DIRECT, HOLD NOTHING BACK, AND GO RIGHT TO THE TRUTH.
In an effort to regulate alcohol and drugs today, more laws and educational training are directed toward illegal underage drinkers and drug users than any other group. Teenage drinking/drug use is one of our nation’s primary health and safety concerns. Although the legal drinking age in America was once 18, it has been 21 in all states for several decades.
Why then do you believe so many young people drink or use drugs? This book will explore why many teenagers and young adults partake in illegal drugs and the consumption of alcohol.
We will not only delve into the dangers of short-term drug use, including alcohol but also explore the complexity of long-term drug effects. After reading this book, you will have the knowledge necessary to decide if alcoholism is a disease or disorder. We will also look into sports and drug use, along with the history of drugs and alcohol.
Young women who engage in excessive drinking might want to know about fetal alcohol syndrome and how it could affect the future of their children. Many scientific studies have been conducted around dopamine deficiencies. We will explore body chemistry to find out how the genes in one’s body can contribute to addiction. Past myths about drugs will be examined. As a Myth Buster
you will decide if the myths have substance and legitimacy.
Asking questions, watching trends, studying epidemics or crises, listening to teens, hearing their concerns, we have targeted subjects that matter to this generation. We will exam dangerous schemes around college and club hazing. This book will not leave out taboo subjects, even though these types of activities would scare the pants off
most parents. Knowledge is power. Learning and forming your own values based on choice is important.
For your safety and well-being, it is essential that you receive accurate information. We will be direct, hold nothing back. You will get the truth. Subjects that are disgusting to some or hard to talk about still deserve a qualified answer. Many topics like using opiates or medical marijuana will be discussed between the covers of this book.
Finally, we will discuss choice behavior and the ability to say no
. Our focus will be on the levels of use to the levels of addiction. We will provide information on how to recognize if you or one of your friends could possibly have a problem with addiction and if that is the case, what can be done to save your lives.
SECTION 1 DRUGS
ON THE LEFT IS A LETHAL DOSE OF HEROIN, ON THE RIGHT, A LETHAL DOSE OF FENTANYL.
WARNING, THIS IS A SPECIAL ADDITION TO ADDRESS:
Fentanyl, a synthetic and short-acting opioid analgesic, is 50-100 times more potent than morphine and approved for managing acute or chronic pain associated with advanced cancer. Although pharmaceutical fentanyl can be diverted for misuse, most cases of fentanyl-related morbidity and mortality have been linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, collectively referred to as non-pharmaceutical fentanyl (NPF).NPF is sold via illicit drug markets for its heroin-like effect and often mixed with heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine as a combination product – with or without the user’s knowledge - to increase its euphoric effects. While NPF-related overdoses can be reversed with naloxone, a higher dose, or multiple numbers of doses per overdose event may be required to revive a patient due to the high potency of NPF. https://emergency.cdc.gov/han/han00384.asp.
Fentanyl’s Effects
• Extreme happiness
• Drowsiness
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Constipation
• Sedation
• Problems breathing
• Unconsciousness
THE OPIATE EPIDEMIC THE DEADLY FACTS
Drug overdose was the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, with 70,237 lethal drug overdoses in 2017. Opioids—mainly synthetic opioids (other than methadone)—are currently the main driver of drug overdose deaths. Opioid addiction was the driving factor of this epidemic, with 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017.
Adding Justin’s name in 2015, to the list was very debilitating to his family and friends. Here is one death of many thousands that never had to happen.
Justin, a teenager was still in high school (you can read his story below). How could such a nice young man, soon to be going off to college become a statistic in the opiate epidemic that is plaguing the United States and Canada?
HERE IS JUSTIN’S STORY
Leading up to his death Justin’s story was typical for a young man in high school. In 2014, Justin was a 17-year-old teen, senior in high school, and a football player. While playing in a home game for his school’s varsity team, he received a severe football injury. Because of his injury he dealt with pain and months of rehabilitation.
During his recovery, he had to be home schooled his senior year so he could keep up his grades and graduate on time. Suffering from his injuries, Justin would be the first to admit he missed the close friendship with his team-mates,
