Chapter One:

Luke felt a bit anxious as he worked his way through the crowd of fellow college students celebrating the start of a new school year. Nearly the entire student body was gathered on the football field while a rock band played on stage in the end zone. Luke took a big sip of his watered down warm beer hoping that it would calm his nerves. It was his first year at Beaver Creek College and he didn't know many of the other students. The only reason he enrolled was for the reduced tuition because his stepmother worked there as a marketing assistant. His father and stepmom also had a house with an extra room only a few blocks from campus.

Eventually, in the far end zone, he spotted three other students he recognized from one of his classes.

Hey guys, said Luke as he walked over to them.

Luke's classmates nodded and continued to stare intently forward.

How did you guys do on that quiz yesterday? Luke asked.

The three continued to stare straight ahead as Luke tried to engage them in conversation.

What are you guys staring at? Luke finally asked.

Check out the chick in the tight black jeans, said Carl, the classmate Luke was standing closest too. She's pretty much doing both of those guys in front of everybody.

Really? asked Luke. Where?

Straight ahead, man, said Carl. She's right in front of us. How can you not see her?

Oh yeah, lied Luke. She's hot.

She is kind of old, said Steve, who was standing on the other side of Carl.

Damn! said Carl. That wouldn't stop me in a bit.

Luke glance around at the back of the crowd, but still didn't see the woman in the tight jeans with two guys. Instead he spotted his step-mom, Tina. Not only was Tina wearing her favorite jeans, but she was dancing with two guys as well. To Luke's horror, he realized that the woman his classmates were ogling was his step-mom.

Despite the fast beat of the music, both young men had their bodies pressed up against Tina. Tina moved her hips grinding herself against them lewd enough to earn the amused looks from the revelers around them.

We should tell them to get a room, said Carl.

You should yell it, suggested Steve.

No, just leave them be, pleaded Luke. I don't need my ass kicked tonight.

Luke was relieved when Tina and her two companions disappeared into the crowd. He was afraid she would see him and come over. The last thing he wanted to have to do was to explain why his father's live in girlfriend was fooling around with two young men.

So are you in the dorm? Carl asked.

No, I'm staying with my father and step-mom in their house, said Luke. They're just a few blocks off campus.

Sweet, said Carl.

They were going to have a separate suite for me in the basement, but it never got finished, said Luke.

Luke wasn't sure what he thought of seeing his father's girlfriend fooling around with two other guys. He was a bit disappointed with her, but not surprised. It had been three weeks since he moved into the spare room and his father still hadn't returned from his business trip to St. Louis. The long business trip was eerily familiar to his father's inexplicable absences before Luke's parent's divorce.

Luke stayed with his classmates until the last band stopped playing and then went back to the house. The house seemed pretty quiet when he arrived. The lights were on and the door was left unlocked, but there was no sign of Tina or the two guys she was with at the concert. Thinking that Tina had been back after the concert and left again, Luke locked the door and got ready for bed.

Luke was just laying down to get to sleep when he heard a noise through the wall from the master bedroom. It was a muffled voice followed by Tina's distinctive laugh.
