Author

Chloe Alice Balkin

Chloe Alice Balkin writes steamy speculative romance ranging from demons and angels to clones to aliens. Her stories include pastries, weird science, and incredibly quirky characters – no surprises there, since her background includes cake decorating, physics, and a decade of vending at music festivals. She's also handy with a sewing machine and knows a thing or two about hanging drywall.Chloe enjoys painting Bob Ross murals on her walls and baking, but her expertise in cake decorating in no way translates to expertise in baking. She currently lives in the Atlanta suburbs with her platonic lifemate and their two children, which are cats.

    First Contact

I'm told what I've done deserves the highest honor. My name will be in history books. I am not just serving my country, but the entire human race.

We have allies in space, but there are rules among the aliens. They can share their knowledge and assign a handful of ambassadors, but they can't staff our military forces. When Beijing was blown off the face of the Earth by enemy aliens, we needed protection, but our allies couldn't give us the bodies for that.

So I've created a race of soldiers of sub-human intelligence using alien genetics and technology. I've created living cannon fodder. I've created monsters. I've created slaves.

My only redemption is in finding the balance between genetics and artificial hormones to make them happy and fulfilled in their servitude — and right now, I'm failing at this. I shouldn't need to travel to space to do this work. We should be able to fix this in a lab, but everything my team has developed has failed. Something is wrong with the soldiers that have made them restless, and I need to study them directly to figure out what needs to be done.

There are two major problems with the soldiers, in fact. The fetuses of the soldiers are also failing in their artificial wombs. Thankfully, I'm not in charge of that issue, because the solution thus far has been to send volunteers up from Earth to provide natural wombs, and I have even worse feelings about that than I do the slave soldier thing. And when my shuttle lands on the space station, I'm asked if I'm here to prostitute myself before I get the chance to flash my military badge.

No, emphatically not. The volunteers are recruited from correctional facilities. No one else would do it. They're given a great deal of freedom and comfort on the breeder station — and a reduced sentence, of course. And when they've done their time, they don't have to go back to Earth if they don't want to. They can stay here or
