About this ebook
My name is Max.
Throughout my life, I have lived inside the confederation. The wall protects us from the harsh wasteland outside. A wasteland is a barren place, where nothing grows for miles. While inside the wall, we are safe and protected.
I don't have a perfect life. It's pretty good and I have a plan. But I never really knew my father.
He was always busy with work. Being one of the council members of the confederation, he didn't have time for his family. Not since I was a child. But I do know that he's been watching out for me. And this year's ceremony is going to be the best. With my father on the council, I'm sure to become a commander, just like him. And when I take my rightful place by his side. He'll remember.
I can't wait for this year's Cleansing to begin.
And for my life to begin.

Singeing her skin with a deep breath, her light blue eyes burst into flames. The power of the explosion behind her moved her forward. In a second, she gasped for air. She felt herself trying to catch her breath. But no matter what, she did. She could only feel the dust ripping around her body.
The world shattered around her. She felt as the explosion travelled down the street. Kicking up dust and objects in its path. The explosion kept moving closer to her.
A roaring sound echoed up the street. She heard the sound of the explosion travelling further towards her. Shattering windows sent shards of glass out into the street. The sight before the woman was like nothing she had ever seen before. The destruction from the explosion was endless.
Looking down the street towards the explosion, she felt the heat coming towards her. The explosion engulfed the buildings, which were only a block away from her. And the heat was enough to make the woman’s skin feel like it was melting.
Her eyes felt like they were about to burst out of her head. And she wanted to look away from the explosion. But her body couldn’t move.
With each breath, she felt the blast eating her skin. Piece by piece, she felt her skin quickly being engulfed by the explosion. The pain spread across her body, like a wildfire, slowly burning everything in its way.
A step onto the solid concrete sidewalk, made her eyes close. She didn’t want to see what would happen next. She felt the dust covering her body. There was a moment when the world froze. Nothing moved. And nothing felt like it existed around her.
She opened her eyes.
The breath in her lungs went forward. She felt the explosion going back up the street, in the direction it came from. The dust that collected on her body was sucked like a vacuum. The dust went back up the street, with an overwhelming amount of force. She clenched onto her fingertips. Her hands went up towards her chest. She tried to not look at the explosion. But the singed bodies of people were the only things, besides the explosion, she could see.
A deep breath went into her nose. And the woman smelt the dust clogging up her nostrils.
Falling to her knees, she noticed what had happened before her. The site of the destruction was too much for her to handle.
Stones were tossed from the fifty-story towers. The stone bricks landed with the rest of the debris. She saw piles of stones and bricks lying in the street before her feet. Flames danced in the air as a piece of paper was caught by the explosion's vacuum. The woman heard nothing, for a good while. The sound of her ears ringing was the only comfort she had. She wondered if any of the singed people before her were even alive.
Echoing down the street was the sound of a
