    Nickel City Sanctuary

    Soon after Phoenix Trinidad and I became lovers, Sunday became our favorite day. Unless she was due in court Monday and had found no time to prepare earlier or my current investigation demanded my presence elsewhere, we spent Saturday night through Sunday evening’s HBO line-up together. By unspoken agreement, that was our time.

    Whether we were in her downtown loft or my walk-up in the Elmwood Village, we slept in, made love, and showered together before stepping outside. Sometimes—especially during our first winter—we made an elaborate breakfast and ate in our robes, chatting and scanning the Buffalo News, which lay between us on my bistro counter or her dinette table. As the weather broke and snow receded, we went out to one of the Nickel City’s numerous Sunday brunches. In late spring, wind and temperature permitting, we stopped for breakfast sandwiches and coffee at a nearby Tim Horton’s. Then
