About this ebook
Growing up as a Catholic in a rural area in Australia in the 1950s, where starting First grade at the local Catholic School was more than just the beginning of formal education. It was above all an initiation into a vast parallel culture. A memoir of a family of that era in rural Australia, seen through the lens of a boy’s religious conscience. There were sins that only Catholics could commit, like eating meat on Friday or missing Sunday Mass. But mostly the priests were there to pardon common failings of the flesh, which the timid liked to list under the general heading of “impure” thoughts, desires, and action. Catholicism encompassed dating, mating, and football playing within an ambient world of symbolism, that defined reality for all who lived in its embrace.
Ruben Carter has been a writer all his life. Much later in life, he was told that he had a way with words, one that he didn't use. I don't know about that, but I do know he can tell a story. In 'Son of Angela', Ruben tells many true stories all related to the main, many humorous, some heartbreaking.

Hello, this is Ruby Carter, [not Jonny Cash]. I was told that I had to tell you something about myself to entice you to read my book. I said that I’d already told you all about myself. She said that was after you read the book, [that’s if you bought it]. Now I don’t know what to say.I just thought of something that I can tell you.I have done a lot of things in my life. I’ve picked up spuds,[potatoes] from a young age, carted wood, milked cows, went to school on a mongrel of a bus, and, thankfully, left school. Then, I picked up more spuds, drove tractors, worked in a furniture store, went roustabouting in the shearing sheds, worked at the steelworks in Wollongong, nearly died, became an overhead crane driver, sold pots and pans, [door to door], sold life insurance, cars, batteries, conducted opportunity, and business training meetings at a venue in Crows Nest, Sydney, in front of three hundred people, and lived on luck. Then, I was a fencer, spud picker, day worker, contract fencer, big gun shearer; they wrote a song about me. I won’t tell you the words. It starts with, ‘I’m the big gun shearer from the ......., I shear sheep all day long”.Then it all went to pieces, and I had to tell you about it.I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. It’s not what you might expect. And, I have rave reviews about my book.Ruby C.[Post Script’]: I didn’t mention that I’m a writer. I love to write. It’s the only thing that takes over my thinking to the exclusion of all else.Rc.
